Burkina Faso Military Rulers Scrap Electoral Commission, Takes Control by chopnaira(op): 6:07pm On Jul 18, 2025
Burkina Faso's military rulers have disbanded the country's electoral commission calling it a waste of money.

The interior ministry will handle elections in the future, state-run RTB TV reported.

Since seizing power in September 2022, the coup leaders have initiated sweeping reforms, including the postponement of elections which would lead to a return to civilian rule.

A nationwide vote was due last year, but the junta extended the period of transition to democracy until July 2029, allowing leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré to remain in power and free to contest the next presidential election.

The AFP news agency quotes Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo as saying that the electoral commission was "subsidised" with around $870,000 (£650,000) a year.

Abolishing the commission would "reinforce our sovereign control on the electoral process and at the same time limit foreign influences", he added.

After coming to power three years ago amid criticism that the civilian authorities were failing to deal with a growing Islamist insurgency, the military leaders have rejected the assistance of former colonial power France in favour of Russia.

Rights groups have since accused the army of targeting civilians in its attempt to quash the militants, as well as suppressing political activity and the freedom of expression.

There are also question marks over the effectiveness of the military operation. In the first half of 2025, jihadist group JNIM said it had carried out over 280 attacks in Burkina Faso – double the number for the same period in 2024, according to data verified by the BBC.

I want to see how they will twist this to smear Tulumbu and Nigeria and paint Traore as the best thing to ever come out of Africa.

I can't even imagine how much this guy is spending on influencers all over Africa to push propaganda. The sad thing is that Nigerian influencers are among those paid - Tayo Aina and co; many Odordients influencers just jumped on the trend without pay for obvious reasons; they effortlessly manipulating our youths to believe the lies and deceptions coming out of Burkina faso. In what world is Burkina Faso better than Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, even Ghana? In what world is a soldier who took power via coup good for the people? Buhari died days ago; while alive and after his death, many people said a lot of bad things about him. How many of them were arrested or assasinated? You fit try am as a Burkina Faso citizen and not disappear? It's a pity. And those they effortlessly trapped are majorly from the camp of Major General Him Tu Lie.

At least, you’re still the choice of the majority. Better than being the choice of the privileged few. Democracy is good, the bad thing about Democracy is that it also accommodates bad people.

No one hates Democracy when it favors them

They don’t want to hear that at all. They only want to stay in Nigeria and be telling whoever cares to listen that Burkina Faso is the best thing since slice bread.

Anyway sha, I really don’t blame them. Majority of them did not witness the brutality of military rule in Nigeria. They never lived through the maradonic era of IBB and the evil regime of Abacha. They know nothing about how folks like Bola Tinubu and others fought for the democracy they now enjoy.

Traore is acknowledged to be performing well by his people so it’s up to them to decide. The basic aim of elections is to have good governance and not that Africans particularly like that concept. If tinubu had come in and brought dollar down to less than 200 naira, fuel down to less than 100 naira, used technology to defeat terrorism and kidnappings to barest minimums, fixed federal highways, citizens getting electricity at least minimum of 8-10 hours everyday…nobody would care about 2027 or what he does in 2027 but his dismal failure the worst in Nigerian history have pushed majority of Nigerians looking up 2027 as a hope of redemption from tinubu

Democracy is not a perfect system of government. It is simply a rule of the majority. In fact, a political scholar once described democracy as the tyranny of the majority. As imperfect as it is, it is still the best form of governance for a multi ethnic and multi religious country like Nigeria. Military dictatorship led to the civil war and the death of esprit de corps in Nigeria’s military. In fact, military intervention led to the collapse of our economy and institutions. We are yet to recover from the series of bloody military coups that took place from 1966 to 1990.
