Abiola Olaniran Dies At 36 by Babangidapikin(op): 8:34pm On Jul 19, 2025
Gamsole founder, and Techpoint Africa’s first angel investor, Abiola Olaniran dies at 36

Abiola Olaniran, the soft-spoken software engineer who turned a campus coding hobby into one of Africa’s best-known mobile-gaming brands, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, aged 36. Sources close to the family confirm that the Gamsole founder was buried the same day in a private ceremony. Although he shunned the limelight, Olaniran’s résumé reads like a highlight reel of Africa’s emerging tech scene.

After leading his Obafemi Awolowo University team to national victory in the 2010 Microsoft Imagine Cup, he doubled down on game development and, two years later, incorporated Gamsole in Lagos. At a time when Africa’s gaming scene was almost non-existent, he chose the then-new Windows Phone store as his launchpad, cranking out colourful casual titles that resonated far beyond Nigeria’s borders.

By early 2015 Gamsole had crossed the 10-million-download mark across Windows Phone, Android and feature-phone stores, a milestone that placed the company, and African game development, on the global map. That same year, the studio announced its flagship endless runner title, Gidi Run, which it would later launch in partnership with MTN, ushering in a new approach to games monetisation within Africa.

Curious345:
Great men die young.. like Gani fawehinmi said " I was treated for cold ,catarrh and malaria in Nigerian great hospitals for over 8yrs, not knowing I had cancer , it took only one diagnosis from a hospital in UK to detect I had lung cancer, but it was already too late so I have to kpai now"...
Crap. If the lung cancer was the cause of his symptoms for 8yrs, he'd had been long gone.

The focus should be on pressurising the government to equip and invest in the local workforce. Healthcare, security and economic growth are things you can't import. We'd have to build capacity.

There are too many holes in your story.
First you said he had cold and cough for 8 years. Now a hearsay article.

What was the interval between treatment for pneumonia and subsequent diagnosis of cancer?
Did he represent to his local hospital when his condition got worse?
What cancer was he actually diagnosed with?

Even if it was lung cancer, a chest infection can manytimes be the initial presentation and it's not uncommon to be picked up after on further investigations if the person doesn't get better after initial treatment. This is the case in the west. This does not mean that everyone presenting with a simple chest infection should have extensive investigations for cancer. Moseso, some lung cancers are picked on incidentally in those who have little or no symptoms.

In summary, there is too little detail to take a sensible stand.

We know the state of our nation which feeds into our healthcare, it's far from perfect with huge challenges. However, it remains one of the very few domains where we have good shoots which we should build- tearing it down would not help. UK doctors are not coming to save you.

Half baked story. What killed him?

It's very unusual to die at 36. Even in Nigeria.

RIP to the guy.

You can't just casually announce that such a young person is dead without at least giving a hint as to the possible cause of death
Re: Abiola Olaniran Dies At 36 by DIVINEEVIDENCE: 4:12pm On Jul 20, 2025
What's this rubbish idea of burying people hours after death?

What if the person's soul returns to his body only for him to end up dying a struggling, suffocating death all over again?

No doctor's confirmation of death, no coroner's certificate, no autopsy.

You might greet someone in the morning only to return in the evening and some people are showing you his grave, that he died in the afternoon.

Tufiakwa.

Life is becoming scary. Young people dying in their prime, their active and productive years.

May God rest his soul and grant his family and friends the fortitude to bare the loss.

This is the kinda of death that touches the heart.

Not someone that chased presidency for years and when eventually gotten it, made lives miserable for the masses. undecided
