18 Incumbent Governors Under Probe, Says EFCC Chairman by Islie(op): 3:07am On Jul 20, 2025
The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, says 18 sitting governors are currently being investigated by the anti-graft agency.

Olukoyede spoke in Lagos on Friday during a sensitisation programme on the ills of naira mutilation and abuse.

According to him, the agency will take action when the tenure of the governors elapses.

The EFCC boss narrated how a former governor was arrested in the United Kingdom spraying pounds in a hotel.

He said the former governor fled Nigeria to the UK a day after he handed over power.

Olukoyede said: “I will give you an experience we had in EFCC. There was a time in this country when we were investigating a governor. We don’t wait until they finish their tenures before we investigate.

“As I’m talking to you, I’m investigating about 18 governors who are still serving. When they leave office, we will go to the next level.

“This governor was investigated while he was in office. Immediately, he finished his tenure, the following day, he took off to England to avoid the arrest of EFCC.

“Coincidentally, that week happens to be his birthday. He organised a birthday party in the hotel where he was staying.

“While the party was going on, he started spraying pounds — 50 bills and 10 bills. So the manager of the hotel was called. He came down and saw the former governor spraying pounds. He had never seen such a thing in his life so he had to call 911.

“When the Metropolitan Police came, he asked that they should help arrest the former governor. The ex-governor was arrested and they wanted to put him in an ambulance.

“The people — his friends, colleagues, and two governors — who went to London to celebrate with him had to intervene. They said the ex-governor was not a mad man because the hotel manager thought he was mad.”

Efcc is one of the toothless agency in the country..

They are only used to chase enemies and perceived enemies.

Has any governor or public office holders gone to jail in Nigeria

Yahaya Bello is walking freely enjoying his loots and marrying new wives.

This is just a lip service statement,EFCC lacks independence

The time this man spends telling people what they don't give a damn about should be spent amending relevant antigraft laws to make this commission more formidable.

1. What if there's a law compelling governors and MDAs to send their monthly financial expenses and their breakdown to the EFCC?

2. What if the EFCC has an inspection department that checks the report to ensure the money wasn't looted?

3. What if there was a law that mandates the EFCC to check whatever an incumbent governor/permanent secretary hands over to the successor six months before the handover date?

Perhaps Mr. Olukoyode understands that the man who appointed him personifies corruption that's why he would rather spend time talking about corruption than doing the actual fight against it.

Only a SENSELESS man goes after a thief who has already spent stolen money. Where will the money come from? The best way to stop a thief is to have systems that stop them from stealing in the first place.

Because of the political TIDE swinging in the favor of the coalition, TINUBU wants to use EFCC to checkmate anyone that is contemplating joining the coalition.

Truly TINUBU is desperate and afraid for 2027.

Truly Afraid grin

Just look at them expressing their discontent with negative comments. The saying that you can't please everyone seems especially true for Nigerians. They often seek out the negative in everything around them. Still, we remain hopeful for our country's future.

This one no be Chairman, na hypeman.
Yahaya Bello Waltzed into the Efcc HQ under his watch and nothing happened.

I think lack of law enforcement background is making him get some things wrong. Media trial for one.

It's better to move in silence and strike when it's least expected.

Can you tell me the positive in this announcement by Olukoyode?

If you say "we remain hopeful for our country's future", why then are you confident in the country's present?

Does that show that even you cannot see anything positive about Nigeria in the present?

By the way, who are the "we"?

Useless scare tactics for those who are ready to abandon Oshiomhole’s Assembly of Past Criminals, APC to take part in rescuing our country from the clueless, corrupt and incompetent bunch of thieves who have wrecked the country in the past decade.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

These laws will only make EFCC officers richer.
They'll start flaunting their Bugatti and Maserati.

From the moment they started channeling manpower to raiding hoods and arresting G-boys, I knew they had reached their limit and should be disbanded.

We have too many agencies and parastatals with overlapping functions.

They should all be disbanded and consolidated.

Otherwise, were going nowhere.
