Presidential Candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was sighted at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

The opposition leader attended the Nigeria Forest Economy Summit 2025, organised by the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion(PreCEFI).

Kwamlwaso neither delivered a speech at the programme nor spoke with reporters at the event.

Speaking at the summit, the Vice President, who was represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia, warned about the critical state of Nigeria’s forests and its economic implications if not tackled immediately.

This is as the Founder/CEO of Netzence sustainability limited (Netzence), Dr. Sadiq Sani, assured that his company is using technology to unlock the over two billion dollars potentials in the forest sector.

Speaking while declaring the summit open, Shettima said, “More than 90 percent of Nigeria’s original forest cover has been depleted, and over 400,000 hectares lost annually, saying the situation was not an environmental crisis, but “economic emergency.”

He stressed that the country is at a crossroads and that neglecting forest resources directly impoverishes the nation and its people.

“We cannot underestimate the importance of our forests. They are a treasure trove of biodiversity, timber, medicinal plants, and other valuable products that underpin agriculture, trade, health, climate resilience, and finance. Yet this vast potential remains largely untapped.

“Look at Vietnam, earning over $15 billion yearly from forest exports. Brazil’s Amazon contributes 15% of their GDP from forests alone. Ethiopia has generated 350,000 jobs through reforestation and value chains. Nigeria should not only replicate these successes but lead Africa’s forest industrialization,” he said.

Yeah, he was in Aso rock for a summit in the office of the VP. Meanwhile, some naysayers spreading falsehoods that Shettima had been sidelined will bury their heads in shame. Not a single week passes and Shettima is not active in one engagement or the other. His relationship with the President is like hand in gloves.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”
