Violence broke out in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, on Sunday following a confrontation between road transport workers, commonly known as agberos, and supporters of a local traditional ruler.

The unrest resulted in the death of a yet-to-be-identified pedestrian who was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle during the chaos.

The incident reportedly followed the unveiling of a new motor park in the area, allegedly established by the monarch to serve vehicles travelling to Nigeria’s northern and eastern regions. The facility, which was launched over the weekend, is said to have sparked tension among existing transport workers, who viewed it as a threat to their control over the park system and revenue collection in the area.

Residents of the community said the conflict began in the early hours of Sunday, intensifying as both groups confronted one another near the newly constructed park. Amid the fracas, a pedestrian attempting to cross the road was hit by an oncoming vehicle, leading to fatal injuries. The victim died on the spot.

Footage shared by local sources showed a disturbing scene at the site of the incident, where concerned residents gathered around the body. In one clip, bystanders were seen using a wrapper to shield the remains from view.

In response to the unrest, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that measures had been taken to restore calm. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the state’s Commissioner of Police had visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment and met with the involved parties at the command headquarters in Ikeja the following day.

Efforts, according to the police, are ongoing to broker peace and prevent further escalation of the conflict.

What a legacy

Agberos virtually own Lagos state. Think I'm joking? Take public transportation and see how they are everywhere, extorting commercial drivers.

Did you know that most traders and drivers did not vote for BAT in the last election? When those guys tell you how the agberos is extorting them, you'd pity them.

That's the legacy of BAT in Lagos - Agberos have more clout than a medical doctor. A sad thing.

PS: I got banned by seun's bots for a very innocent comment. Anyways, helinus is trying to change the goalpost by saying that agberos are everywhere. Yes, I agree. But Lagos tops the state with the most agberos. I've lived in Lagos and many other parts of Nigeria and Lagos is heads and shoulders above in agberoism.

My fellow able bodied Yoruba boys are loitering around motor parks drinking paraga and shouting "owo mi da" as early as 5am.

When I was still in town, three incidents made me almost give up on Lagos and agberos.

One time, I was going somewhere in the morning. Say 8am. I had a traveling bag (note that I wasn't traveling).

I was at Ojota bridge area when suddenly, 3 young guys accosted me and started hailing me, telling me to give them something for the weekend. I told them in English that I didn't have shishi to give. You wouldn't believe that these fewls threatened to seize my phone if I didn't give them money.
I changed it to Yoruba and cussed them. They scuttled away. They thought I was a JJC.

Another bitter experience was when BAT visited Lagos and caused heavy traffic. My guy who worked was going home but because of terrible traffic, everybody had to trek at a point. Agberos wanted to snatch his bag and in the process, they stabbed his chest. He bled out like a chicken on the side of the road, with virtually nobody coming to help. Best graduating student of the faculty fa. His daughter was just a few months old.


If Lagos doesn't rid itself of agberos, the state would implode in 20 years time.

During the last elections, my friends who resembled Igbo but were in fact Yorubas had to lodge in hotels and stay put because in some areas on Lagos, agberos were on the hunt.

Though I am no longer in that area for now but I can guess exactly what might have happened.
The said Monarch whose real name I have forgotten but is popularly known as "Jafo".
He was formerly the Chairman of RTEAN in Lagos after using his boys to chase away the National chairman who they call Alhaji Mala.

Alhaji Mala fought back from Abuja and Jafo was totally removed from the union to go face his Kingship. Until now I didn't know the new park that was build at exactly PPL bus stop beside Alaba Rago was king Jafo's own. So I guess during the opening Alhaji Mala boys feel threatened by it and knows they won't be collecting dues from there so they went to forment trouble and Jafo who is widely known in the whole of Mile 2 down to Badagry with ferocious thugs won't agree and I guess that's what cause the fracas. My personal opinion and analysis of what might have transpire
