Nonetheless, it's not by mouth, man. Many people's replies when you ask them how they knew they are AA is usually something like, "My mother said all of us are AA", or "We don't usually fall sick in my family", or "I do have malaria a lot." All these are grossly unreliable.

To be on the safe side, ask her to go for a repeat at a good lab. May you not fall asleep on a bicycle, my brother.
I understand. I will do that as time goes by. I'm just trying to respect her boundaries. When it's time, I'll make sure I orchestrate an event that will make something leads to something until I push that question you put up here. I really appreciate your inputs. One love.

We need to take this genotype issue seriously as a black race, like witchcraft, the black man was getting amazed and awe about the working of witches and the white man was busy burning thiers.
Now the white race has successfully reduce the SS disease, but we blacks are still struggling with it.

What will you say about eight year olds who die from cancer?
Exactly - not like anyone here is guaranteed tomorrow or next tomorrow or days from now or next week or next month or next year.

No, some of them actually reach their 70s and older. The oldest woman with sickle cell in Nigeria's history died in 2020 at the age of 95. When I was in medical school, one of the oldest Professors of Medicine in the university I attended is a sickle-celler. And he was approaching 70 years at that time.

Truth is, the severity varies from individual to individual. Some will start having crisis from less than 1 year of age, while others won't even have any crisis until much later. Yes, most don't grow beyond age 30-40. But a few grow far beyond that bracket.

So, it's very possible that Adekunle Gold is truly SS.
This is true my cousin started Crisis at her early teens, she's 25 now. She's being managed very well by herself and parents.
Re: Sickle Cell: She Died At The Age Of 40 Years by Bijust:
As a sickle cell patient, life hasn't been easy. Being born in Nigeria already feels like starting at a disadvantage, a score of 1-0 against you. Being born into poverty adds another goal, making it 2-0. And then, to be born with a disease like sickle cell… it's a constant battle against pain, a daily prayer for life itself.

I've managed to get through school, thanks to my mother's unwavering support. I studied engineering. However, I've faced constant rejection from organizations due to my health. I was forced to work in private security for four years, concealing my condition. I left this year after the operations manager, to whom I'd confided about my health, revealed it during a training session, likely to make a point. It felt like they just wanted me gone.

Since leaving, I've been struggling to make ends meet. The biggest challenge is the inability to pursue my dreams with the same drive and determination as others. I remember a final interview at GTB. The interviewer looked me in the eye and asked why my eyes were yellowish. I was honest with him, and he abruptly ended the interview, promising to get back to me. I knew then I had lost the opportunity, and I cried on my way home.

I've endured so much to get to where I am. I pray that God grants me at least something to smile about before my time is up.

Hope you know we have sickle cell variants like AC and SC? You can't possibly live up to 50 if you're really SS.

There has been medical breakthrough in the treatment of sickle cell disease, but Bobo Chicago has made it difficult for Nigerians to eat, let alone access a good hospital for treatment.

You have a point though. I wonder why people keep such thing from others, especially people who are close to them.

When I went for a hair cut yesterday evening, I saw the burial poster of a young woman on the entrance iron lock door of the shop near the barbing shop.

I went through the burial poster and discovered that she died at the age of 40.I was inquisitive and asked the barber what happened to her and he told me she was the person that had the shop the burial poster is and she had Sickle Cell and died from it's crisis.

She died behind leaving her husband with 4 kids.
I was completely broken with what she might have passed through in life.
So so sad.
I pray light guides her home .
May her gentle soul rest in peace.
As a healthcare professional who has seen what VOC does to them, and a lot of crisis they undergo cos of occlusive crisis,I weep for her..
Allowing a sickler to bear up to 4kids is not only insane but hilarious

Its possible she was not aware of the dangers of giving birth to such a number of kids or she was accidentally taking in .

what are you saying Biology student. if the husband is AA, all the kids are free and strong with AS
Mabuggi88:
Hmmm this is quite sad. May her soul rests in peace. I just hope the Children are free because the chances is just one out of that four. Hope they free though.

I also had a friend and brother at age 43 already oo and still died of the crisis after surviving so many previous crisis and at the period of his life when crisis barely comes he succumbed. It's quite pitiful.

Correct, it depends on the husband genotype

Lost 2 nephews in 2021 to this dreaded issue. Best bet is to prevent/ avoid it. Do not be blinded by 'love' to marry any one that will make your children prone to having it. Know your genotype and that of your partner before the relationship go strong and into marriage. The pains of sickle cell management can erode whatever depth of love you think you share with your partner.
