Niraland family Please I really need your help on this matter. So sorry my writeup may be long.

I graduated from University of Benin in December 2019. Due to lack of funds, I couldn't go for my clearance until about a year plus later.

The time I went, everything was going on well until I got to the student affairs department where it was discovered that my name was wrongly spelt.

The mistake was from my department and j was referred back to my department to get it corrected before I could go on with the clearance.

I went back to my department, met my HOD and explained everything to her. She asked me to write a letter and give to her secretary. I did and asked the secretary how long it could take and he said maybe 2 months.

Two months later, I went back to the school to check and the error was not corrected. I went back to my department and the HOD again said I should write a letter. I did and months again, nothing changed.

The cycle continued until I ran out of funds to keep going. Each trip cost me over 50k then. I sent my friends who were still in the school then to help me remind her. They did, even submitted another letters, still nothing changed.

Last year around July, I heard that the department had got a new HOD, I gathered some money to go and see the man and see if he can help me. When I got to his office, I explained everything to him and he said that I'm not serious. That he has been HOD for some months and no such complain has ever come to his table. I then told him that I have sent letters countless times to the former HOD, though I haven't sent any letter nor came to the department since he assumed office due to financial constraints.

I told him that I asked my friend who reside In Benin to help me get his number so I could reach out to him. Then he flared up, insulting me and my generation. That I have no professor in my linage and why should I be asking for his number. He said we are not mates and all. After the whole insults. He still asked me to write a letter and submit with his secretary, with a copy of my "school screening certificate" and "eligibility slip" to verify my real name. I did, and it's almost a year now. Yesterday I called the clearance officer at the student affairs department and she said "Iyede they never do am"
And don't know what else to do, it's over 5 years now since I graduated. And the fault is not from me. All my documents has my correct name, even the screening certificate and eligibility school issued by the school all has my correct name. My online student's kofa page, has my correct name. So the error is from them.

And in a country like this, after 5 years, no any work experience, no certificate to even apply for any job.
I wish to take them on legally but can I get justice without connection?
NL big fam please if there's any lawyer here that can help or you have a connection to who can, please do.

You're not serious? So what have you been doing in the last 5yrs? My friend carry your bags and sleep in the department 😀

This is so unfortunate and I deeply understand what you're going through. Most of these our institutions abdicate their core duties and they never take responsibility for their faults or errors; unfortunately we're in a country where black is considered white even with glaring evidence.
Despite paying through our noses to get the education, you're always considered the least when you require them to step up and for such a historic school as uniben, this is really worrisome.
Your best bet is to go through the student union and the dean student affairs of the institution with all evidence of payment, slips, result sheets showing your names as well as copies of the previous letters sent t the past HOD and this new one.....I pray you get succor and quick resolution to this because from your story, you seem not to be at fault and your only crime was not having resources to complete your clearance at the right time 🤔🤔🤔

Since 2019 you haven't been cleared, thats 6 years ago.

Move on, even if you are cleared today, the degree is pretty much useless cos there are newer graduates who are younger.

You are in a mental prison and you will be attributing your lack of progress on the degree but you know that you are looking for an excuse to pin it on and the delay by the school is perfect!

Forget legal options, youll be in court for another 3 - 4 years and before you realise it , you are in your late 30s chasing a 10 year old obsolete degree !

Learn a skill or start again but the worst thing to do is to do nothing!

Peace

Nigeria and its leaders (not just the government... I mean civil servants, heads of departments, etc) ARE DREAM KILLERS!

I know what I went through to do my clearance. Imagine a simple letter taking 5 years to sort out. Lazy, archaic, wicked, and evil people. If na HOD pikin, or big man pikin, story for don change. This is just sad!

I know this is just a side of the story. But as someone that has been frustrated before because of clearance, it's juszt crazy.

Why can't we love and respect each other...be at our best when dealing with others irrespective of one's position or influence?

I remember when I was an undergrad student. My Physics 102 result was MISSING. As in, how? Course wey I write pass well? Missing, how? I got to know this during my clearance.

Imagine clearance officer telling me to WAVE IT...that it won't affect my grade as I was already comfortably on a 2-1. Course I suffer write pass... no empathy...so that you'll quickly be done and go home.

I refused, of course. Went to the physics HOD,, an elderly man, a father figure...but in reality, an emotionless man. He easily discarded me, not even giving me listening ears. Went with one of my lecturers again, he threw us out...

And me no fit bribe anybody. Not possible.

It was God that gave his secretary wisdom, we maneuvred, she helped me retrieve the result from the department's archive, I made a copy and went on to submit at my department.

The big question is, why must university clearance be done physically? Why can't it be done online? Why can't I clear out online and go my way? Why must I move from one tabletl to the other...begging and being abused.. One so-called bursary officer would go to work very late and close before 3pm. If you sack him now, him go say na devil.

I once wrote that calling for national prayers will not change anything. It's better we do our best individually in whatever capacity we find ourselves... and pray for the country individually too. The national prayer people are calling for, no be all these wicked people go gather dey pray? Child of God on Sunday, wicked entity on Monday.

Funny bunch of people.

Hopefully your story checks out. If so, raise enough dust online. If you have any evidence... especially the letters you wrote over these years, put it out too. Wish you find justice.

We all must stop looking at Aso Rock as the only problem of our country. True, Aso Rock and its occupants are a major problem, but our individual wahalas dey contribute significantly to the state of the nation too.

So, for this country to get better, each and every one of us must seriously decide to do better. Go to work early, stop all corrupt practices, don't litter, stop exam malpractices, stop signing 7:30am when you go to work by 10am. If employed, be efficient. Function in the exact capacity you were employed. Stop playing God because you no reach. Be kind to everyone you cross path with. Just be HUMAN! This is not even about being religious. Just be human!

See how these things are very common? Not the big, big CRIMES you think have put us where we are. These little things, if achieved, will go a long way!

Bro, I'm writing this from personal experience. This problem is bigger than you think and there is a lot of work to be done to rectify this.
First you have to relocate to Benin cos you will need to frequently visit your department to remind and constantly mount pressure on them to get this done.
Secondly, even after your department/faculty has done their part, there will still be need to present your case at the school senate meetings. Now no one has control over this one. Not you, not your department. You will have to wait it out.
It's after senate approval that you can get greenlight from your department to continue your clearance.

I discovered name error when I was in 300L and wrote letters till I graduated. Was always promised that it will be rectified but every time my name is published, I find same error. I even took time to press for the change before my final exams to avoid issues but discovered it was left uncorrected. The correction was finally done on my testimonial during the early phase of clearance and I thought that was it.

I returned to finish the clearance 18 months later and discovered the error again at the final phase when I was supposed to pick up my statement of result and certificate.
For almost one year, I kept in contact with the department via calls and occasional visits but there was little progress.

It was not until I resigned my job and face the problem squarely that I got results. I was going there every week, even uninvited just to make sure that they were on it.

I thank God for successfully navigating that problem. Good luck to you too.

Legal proceedings take time. If you want to go head on with the school, it might take eternity to get the issue resolved. I suggest you thread with caution, else you waste more time of yours. Once you start doing the right things, this problem will be over before you know it

Despite your obvious discomfort, please be courteous when dealing with those office staff. There are regular changes in those offices with transfers, retirements, promotions, etc. Those that made the error or those you complained to might have left there ages ago. Whoever you complain to now is taking the burden of those who failed to do the job in the last. Just be polite to them.

If you have a few Naira to spare, it will do you good too. Not exorbitant, #1000 here, #2000 here, airtime there. It will open their minds to you and they will help you beyond their office.
I recall some even holding me by hand to offices and speaking on my behalf based on courtesy and sometimes little gesture.

All the best👍

Acknowledged copies should be with you. They are proofs that you submitted the letters to the department. When you deliver an official letter/document, the receiver is meant to acknowledge receipt of such document on the copy that will be with you. If you do not have such copies, you have no way of proving that you submitted such applications/letters. HODs and departmental staff may change but the acknowledged copies are proofs that the department have consistently received your complaint/requests.

1. Initial Physics 102 result was released and pasted far back Year 1. But for clearance, I think departments usually send copies of results to the primary department of the student. In the copies of results sent, my 102 result was missing (I'm not sure if this is what happened, but the lady called to tell me my 102 result wasn't there).

2. Physics 102 is only compulsory for physics students or other science students or so. For the College (I was in the Department of Human Physiology), it wasn't compulsory at the time. I doubt it is compulsory now.

Your No.1 partly answers the question but No.2 does not.
I understand you are a graduate of human physiology (also called physiology in some unis). According to NUC regulations, PHY102 is General physics II, which usually has a C or R status depending on Faculty. It NEVER has an E status. Now, kindly explain to us why the CLEARANCE OFFICER told YOU to WAIVE it given that NUC regulations does NOT give students powers to WAIVER a course. ONLY the University senate can waive a course and they rarely do so for courses that are not E status.

If you still have the clearance problem, I would advice u write to the NUC directly and cc the Vice-chancellor, registar, provost and HOD (in that order). Also cc the Minister for Education.

Take it to God in prayers and fasting — but also take bold action.
One key step is to write a formal petition to your school management. Here’s how to go about it:
Address the letter to:
The Vice Chancellor, copy the
Registrar, Dean,Head of Department
Student Affairs Division
In your letter:,Explain the issue in order (what happened, when, and how)
State clearly that the error came from the department.Include your full name, correct spelling, matric number, and graduation year
Attach copies of all documents (JAMB, WAEC, Kofa page, screening slip, etc.)
Request urgent intervention so you can complete your clearance and get your certificate

No, I do not have any clearance problem; this event happened about 13 years ago, and I have since gone on to other phases of life. As I had explained, I did get the result and the same was sent to the department, I subsequently got cleared, graduated, etc. I'm not familiar with NUC regulations and all that, but the advice to "wave it" was exactly what the clearance officer told me. Unless she wasn't sure of the course situation at the time.

And, a number of my course mates did wave a lot of courses, the natural knowledge of waving I had (have) is that only core departmental courses cannot be waved. This is the knowledge I still have at the moment - maybe I'll need to look it up now.

But the lady told me directly (and in a careless, absentminded manner) that I should "go and wave it na." It was an awful experience, and it's one tale I've always told - won't forget the incident.

Help me repost.

Nigerian public universities have this mentality of always treating their students like slaves.

I believe you knowingly or unknowingly step on toes in the University of Benin. cool UNIBEN is known for victimizing students that dare to challenge authority. cheesy cool

My candid advice to you is to forget about that their 'useless' certificate. From your writing, your are not a dullard. You have what it takes to make money;which is your brain power.

Please, stop doubting yourself;your financial success in life does not depend on a mere certificate from N.B.M University(aka UNIBEN). grin cheesy
