koxyz:The borrowing is tied to the padding by the senators; this is why they rebased the economy to support more borrowing. If Tinubu said he was borrowing to build a Hydroelectric Dam, a deep-sea port an electricity power plant and transmission, I would support him. Blame the Senator and house of Reps The Senate on Tuesday approved President Bola Tinubu’s 2025–2026 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan, which includes requests to borrow $21.8 billion, €2.1 billion, and ¥15 billion, as well as a €65 million grant, to finance key projects and programmes across various sectors of the economy. |

Okay, it's time to be that guy again First, I don't support APC, I never voted for tinubu, never will...for the simple reason that 1) Gani did not like him, and if Gani does not like you, there is something wrong. 2) Tinubu is your basic nigerian leader...short termisim, no serious long term thinking. Even things like removing subsides were forced on him by circumstance. Now, on to the koko7 Our budget for this year was based on the expectation that oil revenue...which forms 80% of our budget for this year...was going to be based on a price of 75 dollars per barrel. At least 75 dollars per barrel this year. Based on that the only borrowing we would have done would have been 13 billion dollars. But what happened is...oil has been below 70 dollars per barrel since the second week of January this year. Except for a few days when it rose to 90 dollars and above, it has remained low. So, our budget is facing a massive shortfall. That means we got to borrow, or else, salaries won't get paid, ministries would be hamstrung, things like passport issuance would be difficult, and even dollars for imports and exports would no longer be enough. And the power sector would be forced to raise power prices to N300 or more per kwh because no money for subsides for bands b-e. If you want to blame someone for this, blame tinubu still. IN 2015, his guy Osibanjo gave a lovely speech about a month before they took over, where he stated that they would diversify the economy. See what has happened under buhari and tinubu self. No diversification or effort towards that. |

sulaak:Senate budget for this year, padding included is....4 trillion naira. Out of 33 trillion naira. That's 2.6 billion dollars...not even up to half of what they are borrowing. They are borrowing because when they set the budget, they expected oil to be at least 75 dollars per barrel. OIl has for the most part been below 70 dollars per barrel since January. It even went as low as 58 DOLLARS per barrel. Result: Shortfall. Hence borrowing. |

The Senate’s approval of the borrowing plan highlights the government's effort to finance key projects, but concerns over Nigeria’s escalating debt burden remain. While the plan is seen as an investment in growth, the real challenge lies in ensuring these funds lead to tangible, sustainable improvements for the people, without exacerbating the country's fiscal pressur |

nairalanda1:The budget, which was based on $ 75 and 2 million barrels per day, was overambitious and unrealistic. The government should have prioritised the cut in government expenditure, reduced the size of the bloated government and cancelled some of the unnecessary projects, such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway. If there is any need for excessive borrowing, it should be for investing in the electricity infrastructure. a country of 220 million generating 5000 MW has no hope of lifting its people out of poverty. |
