Nigeria is full of wasted opportunities and talents. Imagine being lumped with the poorest nations in the world. I bless the day I renounced my citizenship of this holeshit, shredded my passport and sent it to the nearest Nigerian embassy, instructing them to never grant me entry visa.
You renounced your citizenship and you are still hanging around Nairaland? This alone should tell the doubters that Nigeria cannot be ignored or forgotten just like that, even Kemi of London cannot forget about Nigeria.

Our undoing is the large unproductive population of the country held down by strong religious sentiments and beside we know that more than half of the states in Nigeria will not appear in the list if placed at par with countries on this list.
Lol, the truth of the matter is the south is just as unproductive as the north.

Not one southern state can claim they export manufactured goods and services to the world and earn mega dollars in return despite the advantages of education

All southern states will collapse if oil ran out tomorrow. Only Lagos in the south and Kano in the north can survive without oil money.

Stop boasting . Ye are just the north with better education

How will Nigeria grow when corruption and fraudulent and evil practices are the other of the day. Fake and substandard drugs and drinks from certain people and region flooded our market everyday and forcing the genuine producers out of market. What of hard drugs traffickers who are spoiling our name outside the country, how will investors from outside the country come and invest in our country which in turn will boost our economy and make us rich.

The sad thing is that the same people that are guilty of these terrible acts will flood this thread to castigate the country and its leadership.

I was telling one guy one day, imagine, you were a child, you shouted up nepa, then you will grow up have a child and that child will still scream "Up nepa", chai, God forbid.

See awon "Tinubuadvocate", after supporting buhari and Tinubu, asking now to relocate to Canada with his family.
That 'up nepa' thingy breaks my heart most. Especially when my daughter screams it. Makes me feel like a failure because I promised myself even before getting married that I will never raise any of my kids in this type of country where wrong is right and vice versa

Guy stop confusing yourself.

Even if Nigeria has national wealth more than cameroon and liberia, does it reflects on the lives of the citizens!

That what we are talking about. The country is poor, even yes i know that Nigeria has a large economy.
Afrojuju2017:
Ignorance is a very dangerous disease and you're demonstrating it very flawlessly.

How can Cameroon and Liberia be considered as richer than Nigeria ! The list is GDP not national wealth.

India is wealthier than most of the nations in the EU but due to its over 1B population the GDP would reflect lower.

GDP can be a very deceptive an incorrect way to represent the sovereign wealth of a nation rather it can only help to understand the distribution of wealth but in itself it is not the only means to understand the socio economic circumstances of the population.
Re: See The 50 Poorest Countries In 2025 According To The IMF by Love800(m): 8:17pm On Jul 23, 2025
So what makes a country rich?

And what is the post saying about, if not talking about wealth of a country!
Keneeby:
You lack understanding. The post is not about the richest. You can see India is on the list. The problem of Nigeria is our population. Our population is very large comparing with GDP. It means the larger population of Nigeria are not productive.

I already addressed that on my last paragraph. The GDP doesn't reflect the socio economic realities of a majority of the population inost nations. The nations where their GDP is a reflection of true living standards of over 75% of the population are few, the Scandinavian countries are one example, nations like the USA where there is a large percentage of the population who are below the poverty line for instance have a high GDP but still have millions living in functional poverty

If we continue to get it wrong in our selection of who leads us, we will continue by default to find our selves in lists like this. What a shame! Upon how blessed we are, we can't do better.
With a quarter of our land size only, some countries on this same list will have no business being there.
Sheuns:
We’re not a war. Neither have been in any war in the last 4 decades, yet we’re this poor.
Btruth:
Not surprised. Half of the country's wealth is in the pockets of the politicians. They kept on flirting with all the political parties. Moving from one party to another. All their ill gotten wealth, they cannot use it to drive the economy of Nigeria. Imagine if we have like 20 Dangote (sincerely investing in Nigeria) things will get better. But all of them are just using our national wealth to enrich themselves. To be honest, I think the British needs to come and re-colonise us again. Things aren't getting better at all. No stable electricity nearly 70 years of independent. Security in the country is -0. Economy is in shambles. Corruption is the order of the day. Come to FCID, Alaagbon and see how corruption is eating all our men in black. It's such a business center. Men in black are so interested in your bail funds than solving the cases itself. It was such a pity what I witnessed there 😭. Truly, this country can't be rule together again. It's dishearten.
nairalanda1:
That's per Capita GDP. Cameroon , Liberia and Benin have populations that are not up to even one eighth of ours . That's why they have higher per Capita GDP.

But even then they are poor. Very poor. I've seen videos of Liberia and Cameroonian and Benin cities. They look like Nigerian ones.

If we had twenty million people we would have a high per Capita GDP and we will be there deceiving ourselves

But even then, we are all poor nations because we are resource dependent
dapadawee:
India is only on that list because of her population.
If Nigeria were the size and population of Ghana we won't be there and sincerely if we have good government over the years we shouldn't be on that list.
The north lack of birth control brought us here.
This is not tinubu fault alone all government from Obasanjo till now did nothing to improve the lives of Nigeria.

Tell me one productive measure taken by any government to improve our gdp.

No European nation on that list and almost everything they produce are sourced from Africa.

Africa is backwards

And lastly don't trust every information IMF dish out. White men are black men problem until we realize this Africa is going no where
The hunger and hardship is caused by the british not really the politicians.

the answer in summary is = north had a continuous deficit balance of payment yearly until 1914..

which means all the money north including all the 19 states in the north has been getting since 1914 to 2025 has been the surplus of southern Nigeria's wealth ( which also means all the I:G:R reports are fake especially the ones from the north ).

which also means if southern Nigeria's surplus can take care of 19 states in the north then if 1914 amalgamation never happened southern Nigeria would have no poverty at all ..

and in 1914, Crude oil had not been found in Southern Nigeria yet.. so imagine how well that surplus improves after 1960..

I have known this for some years now - NIGERIA IS NOT AS RICH AS THEY MADE US TO BELIEVE. We have the natural resources but we are not controlling our population growth. It is not about one party, President or the other. It is about the corporate mentality. The region growing Nigeria population exponentially is the North. Until we sit down and have a discussion about population, we simply will be getting poorer. The problem with having this discussion is RELIGION. Once you move for this discussion, the North will reach out for religion and it will destabilize the country quickly. NO PERSON can resolve the Nigerian problem, except all Nigerians are ready to embrace the truth. (I don't take ANY politician serious about promises to make Nigeria prosperous because I know they all know that it is a LIE!) All the economic policy of any government will grow GDP, but uncontrolled population growth will undermine it. 2 things really show you true financial strength of a nation - the budget and the GDP PER CAPITAL, as a country, both are not looking good!

Nigeria is simply not productive enough. We have all these resources and we are not taking advantage of them.
For a very long time we ignored everything and focused on oil, that is simply not wise. Another thing, we need to be aggressive in making sure electricity is available and stable. Energy is crucial to economic development.

There are countries that were run by the british, that probably were under the same terms and condtions as the british, that are more prosperous than Nigeria.

Nigeria is broke because since independence, we have been running an economy based on resource dependency. And under tinubu nothing has changed.

1) before the br:itish left Nigeria, the Br:itish from 1820 - 1960 did not build one university, our number of primary and secondary schools were very low, br:itish did not build smooth roads all over Nigeria , no housing estates, no plans for clean water for communities, no hospitals, no universities, no teaching hospitals, no vocational centers, no power plants, majority of the private companies where owned by the br:itish and they only gave Nigerians clerical work which is what the education system they gave us is meant to produce office assistants.

All the developments you see in Nigeria today from Abuja to lagos to calabar to Akwa-ibom to oyo to Enugu e.t.c are all built by Nigerians, our parents, our grand parents e.t.c the br:itish left Nigeria to rot. Everything you had and have the privilege of enjoying in Nigeria was and is through the hardwork of parents, grand parents, and other Nigerians.

2) the bri:tish leave the people more devastated than they earlier met them. If not for the hardwork and peaceful nature of our ancestors in southern Nigeria, southern Nigerians will be in poverty because the bri:tish created Nigeria in a way where Northern and Southern Nigeria will engage in endless wars...

3) after over 140 years in Nigeria.. the british did nothing for Nigeria and Nigerians..

The problem with you nigerians is your economy is bad because you want to sell raw materials and share the money. Una no wan use the raw materials to make things the world needs. You want to work in an office, not make stuff.

That's the main reason why we are backward.

Better stop blaming other people. Blaming others is why we are backward.
