Nigeria Seeks to Host F1 Grand Prix in Abuja, Targets First African Race Since 1993

Nigeria has officially entered the race to host a Formula 1 (F1) Grand Prix, aiming to become the first African country to stage the prestigious event since South Africa in 1993.

The National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Shehu Dikko, announced its ambition and has appointed Opus Racing Promotions as the official representative for Nigeria’s bid. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
F1 Officials, Lewis Hamilton Invited to Abuja

To strengthen the proposal, Dikko has invited top F1 figures to Abuja, including:

Stefano Domenicali, F1 CEO

Lewis Hamilton, seven-time World Champion

Tilke Engineers & Architects, world-renowned F1 circuit designers

Discussions with government officials and private sector stakeholders are expected to focus on infrastructure, tourism, and investment opportunities.

“A Driver for Tourism and Economic Growth” – Dikko

Speaking on the bid, Dikko emphasized that the project goes beyond sports:

“We are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as practicable — not just as a sporting event, but as a driver for tourism, infrastructure, youth engagement, economic growth, and national unity.”

If successful, the Grand Prix could boost Nigeria’s global image, attract foreign investments, create jobs, and position sports as a major contributor to the country’s GDP.

Tough Competition from Other African Nations

Nigeria faces competition from South Africa and Rwanda, who are also exploring bids to host the F1 Grand Prix on African soil.

It's a great news,
The Europeans create sport and used it to create employment to their youth, if this can be replicated here, it would be a great relief for the youth.

Interesting one.

Abuja is as good a place as any on Earth to host Formula One.

Top class city.

More so with Mr Project, Wike, running things there.

Modified

You see why we have problems in this country undecided everyone quoting me are talking about ABUJA SMOOTH ROADS and leaving out the most important aspect of such a competition which is PROPER HEALTHCARE cry

So what happens when two racers crash into each other or a barrier 🚧 and their vehicles catch on fire? Airlift them to London or France to get medical treatment?

Kai! No wonder we keep voting in the kind of leaders we have. Truly our people are yet to evolve even on top all the education we claim to have angry

Great news in what way?

If the government could not optimize other sports to better the youths, is it with F1 it will do it?

You need to visit Abuja city centre, no single Port Hole, the only obstacle is speed bumps on some junctions that could easily be removed if necessary. You stay in Oshogbo all your life attacking Igbos on Nairaland without travelling around the country like them. Landlord travel and see, Abuja has the roads to host a grand prix

Do we have the logistics and technical specialists to provide support for the F1 teams..the F1 is a very sophisticated sport. Good roads alone don't cut it

They should take these things serious o.

There are many sports that idle and jobless people can benefit from. The government just have to be serious with investment involving sports.

Even football wey the whole nation love unitedly, dem dey always fvckup with players welfare and payments.

Abuja roads are good but the F1 facility no be joke. Only PPP would make it work with sustainability. it has to be hosted consistently for investors to recover their money and also develop our tourism and sports sectors. See the Abuja stadium today. Government should not be fully involved in sports. They'd run it around.
Re: Abuja Seeks To Host F1 Grand Prix, Targets First African Race Since 1993 by shogotermies(m): 10:30am On Jul 24, 2025
lol. Is Nigeria ready to pay 50M usd for the formula 1 arrangement and logistics?

Do we have the structure to provide massive security regarding that?
Re: Abuja Seeks To Host F1 Grand Prix, Targets First African Race Since 1993 by systemz(m): 10:31am On Jul 24, 2025
This is so incorrect. There's technology around to help do this. It's a matter of importing them and put into use.

I've been to Abuja, the road are good, but not for formula 1 used.
These cars ain't those shock- absolver kind of cars. Except they want to start making roads for the event separately and starting now
