French President Macron sues Candace Owens over claim France's first lady was born male

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. on Wednesday against right-wing influencer Candace Owens, centered on her claim that France’s first lady is male.

At least she was not arrested. Defamation is treated as a civil matter in USA. While in Nigeria, it involves kidnaping the alleged defamer.


Previously, Brigitte Macron sued two French women for spreading similar claims in 2022. After winning the initial case, this year the women won an appeal and the lawsuit will go to a higher court.

U.S. conservative firebrand and political commentator, Candace Owens, has dared French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, following a defamation lawsuit the couple filed against her in the United States over claims that the French First Lady was born male.

In a video on her YouTube page, Owens doubled down on her allegations and mocked the legal threat, insisting she was ready to face the couple in court and even take the matter to the discovery stage of the U.S. legal process.

“You were born a man and you will die a man. That’s the point I’m making,” Owens said in the video. “So give us a sample. I’ll send my doctors to take your blood, figure it out real quick however you want to go about this.”

She continued: “Hey, how about just giving us some pictures again of you growing up, you know, raising your children? That would be fine... We’ll get to the bottom of it, right? That is what discovery is for.”

According to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Delaware Superior Court, the French President and his wife accused Owens of waging a campaign of “global humiliation” and “relentless bullying,” centred on a bizarre conspiracy theory that Brigitte Macron, 72, is a transgender woman born Jean-Michel Trogneux — the name of her older brother.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Macrons described the campaign as “invasive, dehumanising, and deeply unjust,” arguing that every time they step outside their home, they are now shadowed by Owens’ widely circulated claims.

Owens, who is known for her extreme-right views and close alignment with President Donald Trump, reacted with open disdain to the lawsuit, portraying herself as a whistleblower challenging a global elite cabal.

“I’d like to make it to discovery. I think we owe that to the world,” she said. “We’re revolting against the perverts that run the world. And I want to be very clear here: I count you among them.”

“I think you’re sick. I think you’re disgusting. And I am fully prepared to take on this battle on behalf of the entire world,” she said.

The 22-count civil complaint against Owens seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, marking one of the rare instances in which a sitting world leader has turned to U.S. courts to file a defamation suit.

Under U.S. defamation law, public figures like the Macrons face a high burden of proof — they must establish “actual malice,” meaning Owens knowingly made false claims or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

While conspiracy theories about Brigitte Macron’s gender have circulated on the French far-right fringe for years, it was Owens’ amplification of the claim to her massive American and global audience that apparently forced the Macrons into legal action.

In recent years, Owens has styled herself as a truth-teller and provocateur, often targeting what she calls the “globalist elite.” But critics say her tactics have veered into hate speech and baseless defamation, cloaked as political commentary.
