How The South-east Keeps Missing The Presidential Train - And How They Can Fix I by vheekybillz(op): 9:05pm On Jul 25, 2025
Southeast people want the presidency (and rightly so). But every cycle, they split their votes, argue on WhatsApp, and show up late. No unity. No national bridge-building. Too much emotion, not enough chess. Until they learn to speak one voice, build allies outside their zone, and support a long-term strategy, Aso Rock will stay a dream. It’s not tribalism - it’s political wisdom. Ask the North, they’ve mastered it.

Ah, the danger of assumptions - they often say more about the reader than the writer.

Indeed. But the tragedy isn't in being right twice. It's in those who keep ticking, yet never align with truth, not even accidentally.

And what is your own version of truth in this case? 🤔

Knowing fully well that truth looks peculiar to each individual depending on the level & elevation via which the gazer stares at it wink

Sometimes what you read reflects a lens, not a life. The danger lies in mistaking the voice of creativity for a mirror of the creator.

So there is no unity among igbos but they vote in one direction?

So igbos voting every region is not bridge building

The issue you guys don't get is this Igbos are not desperate to be President... A bad Igbo presidential candidate would lose South East if a better candidate is available from elsewhere

If we wanted president we would have worked with Buhari in 2003 but we are not like Yoruba

We would have worked with North in 2011 if we were desperate for president

The voice of the CREATED or that of the CREATOR🧐

Igbos have shown political conviction, but to truly wrestle power, they may need deeper diplomatic alignment with other regions. Power in Nigeria doesn’t come by emotion, it comes by coalition.

You people are very desperate if not you people and obi will not be campaigning with religious sentiment. Christian take back your country. Yes daddy, it is a religious war. Even obi knew the APC was just a political calculation but try so hard to decieve Nigerian Christians of a religious war. The op is right. You people voted pdp all those years because you all were simply onlooker in the pdp.

I know you are probably a young naive boy in your late twenties or early thirties trying so hard to become a political pundit online.

Now let me educate you small if at all you are open to learning.

The only reason Igbos haven't produced President since 1970 is the civil war.

What Igbos of the 1950/1960 era did in Nigeria was so shocking that it still make Northerners and Yorubas scared of Igbos till date because they know no other tribe in Nigeria have the braveness, guts, courage and might to dare it except Igbos. The incidents that happened between 1966 to 1970 scared Northerners and Yorubas so much that they shiver at the thought of having an Igbo man emerge Nigeria's President.

Do you know what it means for one tribe with the support of few other tribes like Akwa Ibomites, Calabar, etc to challenge the rest of Nigeria backed fully by Britain, Russia, Egypt, US partially, Arab nations, etc and engage them in a full blown civil war for two to three years such that Nigeria could not win Igbos through military power/war and had to resort to use of a drastic inhumane starvation/food blockage policy to force the war to an end?

History have it that Nigerian troops are always in panic whenever they were invading Biafra side, that's even after British pilots have helped them to clear the road via massive air bombardment of Biafran soldiers before the Nigerian land troops advance. Yet the Igbos sustained the war for almost 3 years with very minimal support from France, Gabon, Ivory Coast.

In order to win Biafra who proved so brave and difficult, Nigerian government had to sell Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.

So after the war, Northerners out of fear that Igbos may rise again and start Biafra agitation again, made sure Old Eastern Nigeria then Biafra was completely divided to reduce Igbo influence and economic strength as a way of subduing Igbos never to rise again to challenge Nigeria. They also had some other secret agreement that no Igbo will be allowed to occupy certain sensitive positions in Nigeria that will give them an edge, they are:

1.) President
2.) Chief of Army Staff
3.) IG of Police
4.) Chief Justice of Nigeria & Attorney General
5.) Chief of Defense Staff
6.) National Security Adviser

It was Goodluck Jonathan that broke the first jinx by appointing an Igbo man Chief of Army Staff which got Northerners so infuriated and they had to rise up against Goodluck.

The above are the reason Igbos haven't produced President in Nigeria not all the jargons you wrote because:

1.) Igbos have supported Presidential candidates from virtually all Nigerian tribes and regions, namely;

MKO Abiola, Yoruba, (Igbos voted him massively against the lies people were told, if u doubt me pls download the 1993 Presidential result and crosscheck the result state by state).

Olusegun Obasanjo Yoruba, Igbos massively voted for him and stood by him throughout his 8 years in office.

Musa Yaradua Fulani, Ndigbo also voted massively for him and supported his government before his eventual demise.

Goodluck Jonathan Ijaw, Igbos voted and supported Goodluck from day 1 and stood by him defending him even after he was voted out in 2015.

Atiku Abubakar Fulani, Ndigbo also supported and voted massively for Atiku in 2019.

Shehu Shagari Hausa, Ndigbo gave him massive support in 1979 before Buhari removed him via military coup.

The above is a rundown of how much Igbos have voted and supported Presidential candidates from virtually all the major tribes in Nigeria and therefore deserve to be supported by all too.

And I can boldly tell you that part of the reasons Nigeria isn't progressing the way most of us Nigerians desire and wish is how Nigeria have treated Igbos. Life is beyond ordinary. Whether you like it or not, there is a spiritual side of life.

Germany caused a lot of chaos in the world between 1917 to 1945 in first and second world wars, Europeans and the rest of the world despised them for long but later after the end of second world war, Europe forgave them and forgot the past and today, both Europe and Germany are very prosperous.

If you check, whenever you hold on to the past to be maltreating someone that you believed wronged you in the past and refuse to let go, you will be struggling with many things in life, you will never live a fulfilled life until you forgive them and let go.

Let me stop here for now

Yeah you're not like Yorubas. Only that your ancestors have been working with Fulanis since independence using you to play second fiddle. When the Yorubas decided to work the Fulanis, the Fulanis dumped your people. But unlike you, Yorubas have the sense to be firm and let them know they cannot play second fiddle for life, hence the Yorubas were able to get to power, while you're always going to wail as second fiddle. So, truly you're not like the Yorubas.

This is grandstanding and is a disservice to the upcoming generations in the Southeast. Other regions suffer all the vices you stated above but at least they have infrastructure brought about by being in the corridor of power. Rails (think Kaduna-Abuja rail and Lagos-Ibadan rail), roads (think 15 trillion Lagos-Calabar highway), ports (think Lekki deep seaport) and bridges. The igbos are highly industrious, but they mostly thrive outside the Southeast where they utilise these infrastructure even better than the original inhabitants.

The SW is increasingly becoming more Conservative and will increasingly become more hostile to the Southeasterners. The best time to be strategic and develop your region for the sake of the young generation is now. No group of individuals no matter how rich can bring that level of development in the SE. You need government funds. This is politics, you won't get what you deserve out of pity but only through politicking and strategic alliance. But do you.

Wow. That’s a lot of romanticized war trauma to unpack. You sound less like someone offering 'education' and more like a man rehearsing old battle songs in a world that has moved on. But let’s break it down gently since I’m still in my 'naive twenties,' and you clearly think age comes with wisdom, even when your thought process is clearly stuck in a 1960s transistor radio.

First off, what you’ve offered isn’t history. It’s nostalgia disguised as victimhood, weaponized to guilt-trip everyone else into rewarding your tribe with the presidency as if that’s how democracy works. That’s not bravery; that’s entitlement with a historical flavor.

Yes, the Igbos fought in the war. Yes, it was brutal. But that was over 50 years ago. Germany didn’t get reintegrated by constantly retelling war stories and blaming their neighbors for not letting them lead the EU. They moved on, rebuilt themselves economically, politically, and diplomatically. They didn’t sit in forums crying that everyone is afraid of their 'courage.'

You claim Igbos have supported everyone from Abiola to Atiku as if that's proof of national generosity. Sir, that's just democracy. Everyone votes. Nobody gets a trophy for being a voter. Other tribes also voted for Igbo candidates. Or is Peter Obi's national spread suddenly invisible because it doesn’t fit your 'nobody likes us' narrative?

And about your so-called 'secret agreement' to block Igbos from power - if that’s true, then the real question is: What has Igbo political elite done since 1970 to outsmart that system? You think courage is just going to war? Courage is also strategy. Negotiation. Building alliances. Outgrowing grudges. Showing emotional intelligence. Winning with brains, not just bullets.

Let me tell you what’s truly holding Igbos back. It’s not Nigeria. It’s this constant clinging to martyrdom. This loud declaration of exceptionalism while refusing to build political bridges in reality. You want power, but dismiss the very diplomacy it takes to get there. No tribe wins the presidency by saying 'support us because we suffered the most.' That’s not nation building - that’s pity marketing.

Lastly, stop insulting people who challenge outdated ideologies. The fact that I can dismantle your half-baked historical fairy tale with facts and logic means maybe - just maybe - you should sit back, take a break from lecturing, and learn something from this ‘naive boy.’ You don’t own the truth. You just sound like someone who hasn’t updated their mental operating system since the war ended.

I said it that you know nothing about Nigeria's history and why Igbos haven't produced President.

I repeat it to you that the only reason Igbos haven't produced President since 1970 is due to the events of 1966 to 1970, nothing else. It is the only reason Northerners remain scared of supporting an Igbo to become President. It is the reason they always work against Igbo Presidency, not your yeye talk of building bridge, which bridge?

Nigerians collectively agreed to dash Presidency to Yorubas as a way of pacifying them for what happened to Abiola in 1993.

That was why Obasanjo was brought out of jail and handpicked to fly PDP ticket.

Late Ogbonnaya Onu and many others were told to consider Yorubas and they stepped down and gave way for Olu Falae to fly their own party's ticket.

Before you come with you guys usual lies to distort history, before Ogbonnaya Onu died, in 2022, at APC Presidential Primaries, Ogbonnaya Onu reminded the whole Nigerians to their faces what they did for the Yorubas to settle them for 1993 saga, which made two Yorubas to emerge as Presidential flag bearers of the two major parties that contested the Presidency in 1999, in which Obasanjo emerge victorious.

All the old Northern guys with Obasanjo that know about the unwritten agreement never to allow an Igbo person occupy sensitive positions in Nigeria, especially President after the end of the civil war have realized their mistake and are working so hard to correct their mistake while they are alive, that was why you saw people like Theophilus Danjuma, IBB, Obasanjo and all the old Northern, Middlebelt and Southwest elites back Peter Obi to emerge President in 2023, of which Obi did win but Tinubu had to bribe INEC to help him block polling unit result upload to irev to give them the opportunity to manipulate the result and came up with 8million plus votes for Tinubu.

You won't understand what's happening behind the scene because you are still a naive youth trying so hard to become an online political pundit.

You naive Southwest youths will be using words you don't understand, Igbos should learn to build political bridge, do you even know what you are talking about?

Let me remind you again that since Nigeria has independence, Yorubas have always been in the opposition shouting, it was Igbos and the North that worked together to produce Nigeria's President, things only changed in 2015 where Tinubu led Yorubas to betray Goodluck Jonathan a fellow Southerner, and that was how Yorubas came to political alignment with the North.

Go back and check election history in Nigeria, it's always North and Igbo. Even after the war in 1979, North had to run back to align with Igbos to produce Shagari and Alex Ekwueme. Awolowo lost.

In 1993, North also went back to Igbo, but unfortunately even Igbos voted massively for MKO Abiola even when an Igbo man was contesting alongside Tofa as his running mate but because Igbos believed MKO was better, they voted for MKO unlike in 1979 they voted massively for Shagari/Ekwueme leaving Zik, Awolowo, etc.

Who was the main character that rallied other notable Nigerians to form PDP? Dr Alex Ekwueme an Igbo man, yet a naive boy like you is here talking nonsense about things he doesn't know, instead of paying attention to learn.

History of PDP here https://peoplesdemocraticparty.com.ng/en/about-us/

Imagine a naive Yoruba youth telling Igbos to build political bridge, what a bull crap talk.

When did Yorubas started working with North in Presidential election, just 2015 and you are here gloating about something that just happened yesterday which your god Tinubu is already destroying with reckless abandon.

Please don't get me angry.

You guys should focus on what you know.

When it comes to Nigerian politics, Igbo senior Yoruba. The only thing that has been working against Igbos in national politics is the events of 1966 to 1970, without that, who are you guys to talk about politics or tell Igbos what to do or not do in national politics, can you imagine the effrontery angry

In your ignorant mind, Nigerian Presidential election started in 2015 angry

I said it that you know nothing about Nigeria's history and why Igbos haven't produced President.

I repeat it to you that the only reason Igbos haven't produced President since 1970 is due to the events of 1966 to 1970, nothing else.
You just wasted a whole essay trying to sound deep, but ended up proving the exact point you wanted to deny: that Igbos haven’t figured out how to play national politics.

While you are busy crying war stories 50+ years later, others are building alliances, cutting deals, and moving chess pieces. That’s why power keeps rotating between them. They play smart. You? You play victim.

You say Nigeria "dashed" Yorubas the presidency in 1999. LMAO. Yorubas worked the system. They negotiated. They backed Obasanjo even when he wasn't their favorite son. You think Igbos would’ve done that? Never. That’s the problem - no unity, no patience, just loud entitlement.

Even Peter Obi’s 2023 run wasn’t because he’s Igbo. He got support because he stood for something clean and different - and most of that support came from outside the South East. That alone shows it’s not ethnicity holding Igbos back, it’s your terrible political strategy.

Let’s be real: politics is not about history or who cried most - it’s about strategy, patience, and power play. Stop wailing and start building real alliances across zones.

Ndigbo hav never spilt their votes, the've always gone with PDP, who have treated them badly in return, apart from last time out when they went with Peter Obí.

The solution to Ndigbo sitting at the top table moving forward, and Soludo and Bianca can sooner rather than later, is better behaviour on social media and picking and choosing your battles.

To my "choosing your battle" point, look how quickly Obidients immediately destroyed Peter Obi's chances in ADC.

It's Ndigbo's turn, but they will never be able to bully anyone to get that turn, never!
