I was traveling from Kaduna to Abuja in commercial vehicle just after my NYSC. All of a sudden the Tyre pulled from the car and we saw it overtaking us. God saved us from a major accident or somersault.

I have had two tire experiences/incidences...

The first wasn't a burst tire per say. I was traveling from jos to lagos by road at the time.
I was traveling with a companion... a friend. We woke up early to prepare for the journey by 5am thereabouts. Early that morning we stopped at my vulcanizer to change two of the tires I bought brand new the previous day.

I guess in the haste of changing the tires( I, my friend and the vulcanizer actually changed the tires to make the job faster since we wanted to beat time) we forgot to tighten the bolts to the back tire on the driver's side.

While driving we kept hearing a weird sound like metal rubbing on each other. I came down to check where the sound was coming from about 3 times but couldn't identify where the sound was coming from. But I knew it was somewhere from the back wheel.

So we entered and resumed the journey after concluding we would stop at the next road side mechanic we saw or vulcanizer to check what the issue was.

We hadn't gotten far when I heard a loud noise and I actually saw the tire rolling past and into the bushes nearby.

It was like watching a cartoon.

The bolts had loosened and the tire had left the wheel speeding pass.

I steadied the car, we retrieved the tire from the bush,where able to find some of the bolts, tightened the tired and continued on our journey.

The other occasion was when I was driving from kano to Jos. I had a passenger in front and two at the back.

I wasn't speeding and was doing about 80km/h which apparently made accident less severe because normally I was a fast and furious driver at the time.

I just heard the tire burst. Black smoke and dust everywhere (the tire was expired. I had noticed it late and already made a mental note to change when I get to destination. It was probably the reason I was driving slower than usual)

In the process of of steadying the car the front wheel tyrod broke on the driver's side meaning I only had control of one front wheel to control the car.

We found ourselves inside the nearby bush after narrowly missing a big covertt and ditch.

The people screaming inside the car was enough to confuse the best driver. They were just screaming "Jesus" ,"Allah" and what not.

I held the steering and did my best to control with concentration and boldness.

But when the car halted and with everything over I kept shaking like a leaf. Adrenaline rush.

I left the car there in the bush after entrusting it in care of the local people and their chief at the nearby village where it happened.

We left to Jos... got my mechanic the next day to the spot to fix the broken tyrod and struts as they was no mechanic nearby and it was getting late.


For some weeks later I couldn't drive. I just had that phobia and trauma from the accident.

Those are the experiences I have had with burst tires or tire related accidents!
