What I expected from Peter Obi vs what Tinubu is doing

On the 25th of February, 2023 I left my house and trekked for over 45 minutes to vote for Peter Obi. I was tired of Buhari and his incompetence and I felt Peter Obi was the right man for the job. I felt he had the guts to take the hard decisions and bring back Nigeria from the edge of collapse. Well we all know what happened; he lost and Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu became president much to my displeasure. It's over 2 years now so I want to compare them using a simple format — what I expected from Mr. Peter Obi vs what Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing.

1. I expected immediate removal of fuel subsidy from Mr Obi. Fuel subsidy had become a cancer to the economy, sucking us dry and leaving us feeble. Fuel subsidy had to go but successive administrations had been too scared to remove it.
PBAT removed it immediately (at least that's what he told us). I was pleasantly surprised.

2. I expected unification and stabilisation of our exchange rates. At the end of Buhari's regime the disparity between the official FX rate and the black market was around ₦300, that's around 80% of the official rate of ₦460 ± ₦5. This gap encouraged corruption and discouraged investment. We needed stability in the FX market and that stability required liberalisation. liberalisation that will devalue the Naira and increase our hardship. I expected Obi to do just that and I thought PBAT will not be bold enough to do it. I was wrong, again. Colour me surprised.

3. I expected Mr. Obi to pay off the backlogs of loans and FX owed to multinationals with the money saved from the aforementioned measures thereby reducing our debt servicing to revenue ratio and showing the world our business readiness. PBAT is doing all this.

4. I expected tax reforms from Oga Obi. Nigeria cannot continue like this. A country where taxes are merely a suggestion for the vast majority of its citizens cannot thrive. We need money and we need it now. I didn't think PBAT will even think of doing it but again I was wrong. I don't know yet how effective the new tax reforms will be like but I believe it'll be alot better than what we have now.

5. I expected Mr. Peter Obi to be bold and decisive. I needed someone who has the political will and power to make the changes he wants. One of the reasons I dislike Mr. Jonathan was his indecisiveness. Oga say something and stand by it. Peter Obi was that man to me but PBAT has surprised me. He has stayed strong on tax reforms, fuel subsidy, fx rate etc.

6. I also expected huge gains in security from Peter Obi. PBAT is still lacking in this area but we've all seen how the security agencies have been neutralising terrorists in their hundreds.

7. I also expected increased infrastructural spending and I knew we will need loans for that which is why I was impressed with the 2025 - 2027 MTEF. It was beautiful. From roads to ports to rail, just what Nigeria needs right now. Again colour me surprised.

Now Nigeria has a lot of problems but these ones listed were what I expected within the first few years of Peter Obi's administration and I am surprised (there's that word again) by PBAT.

There are a lot of things that he has not done and a lot of areas where he is lacking (Wike, bloated Lagos-calabar highway, Edo gubernatorial election etc) but compared to the disaster I expected, he is doing better.

Like the saying; the darkest hour is just before dawn, Nigeria's dawn is almost here, we just have to endure the darkness a little longer.

Peter Obi is the air some people breathe. Peter Obi is one of the few policitians who successfully built businesses even before politics. You can talk about him as much as you like, but your favorites will never be up to his standard. Nigerians know that, you also know that.

This OP wants the Igbos to come for him. They don't want to hear anything good about Tinubu. They believe all of Tinubu is bad and all of Obi is good

Three thing make great leaders
1- courage
2- vision
3- resilience

Tinubu has got this three.
He is the best Nigeria has to offer at the moment
Re: What I Expected From Peter Obi Vs What Tinubu Is Doing by Streetinvestor2: 11:57am On Jul 26, 2025
You only failed to say that all you have listed are ideas SW president stole from obi
Then he went ahead to fail in implementing them well thereby creating unimaginable hunger and poverty in just 2 yrs.
He failed in most because he had nothing to offer and too corrupt in his management of our wealth.
So he is never an option in 2027 as we didn't equally vote him in 2023

I don't know about the others but during his campaign, he pledged to remove fuel subsidy and fix exchange rate. Does that means he stole them?

And there's no way that the removal of fuel subsidy and the exchange rate deregulation wouldn't have caused hunger and poverty. It was inevitable.

Now 2027, for me it's still up in the air. If Obi contest as president instead of vice president then I might vote for him but if he contests as VP under Atiku, or El-rufai or Amaechi then either I stay at home or I vote Tinubu.

You're extremely naive. Subsidy is being paid and thats why petrol price is N830+ and not N1530 as sold in the international market

Genuine question please.

Who is subsidy being paid to, and can you provide some sort of proof?
Re: What I Expected From Peter Obi Vs What Tinubu Is Doing by DMerciful(m): 1:29pm On Jul 26, 2025
Subsidy is being paid in form of crude allocation. About 150 barrel or so oer day is allocated for subsidy.

Listen to this guy on Arise

You can google how much is petrol price per litre in international market in dollars and convert to naira

That's not true. I am sure that some places even have it cheaper than us without subsidies.
There is no mention anywhere both in international media and local media that Nigeria still pays subsidy. You don't expect me to believe a random person over trusted journalists and organizations. Even opposition politicians and journalists like rufai oseni admits that fuel subsidy is gone.

You don't even need to listen to anyone, check how much petrol is sold in the international market. If you're buying it almost half the price, someone is bearing the cost

At OP... There are things Obi would have done that tinubu cannot never do.. and this is tinubu did right that Obi will also do, but not as tinubu did it..
Tinubu is Nigeria's second most courageous lader aside OBJ...

I respect him for that..

But u see infrastructure development... Tinubu isn't doing it.. he is only enriching himself... Why will obi spend 27billom to resurface The ICC in abuja..

Why will obi spend 15trilliom do do a hopeless Lagos calabar rail way...

Tinubu is triabilistic in both appointment ND project execution... Obi won't try that...

Tinubu lives in luxury and borrows too much obi won't do that... U see..? He can't match obi..

But u see.. the big guts of subsidy removal that regulated the oil industry. Obi will do it in phases with 12 calenders month unlike tinubu.. because if u don't Dangote will b on your neck justifiably...

In all... Tinubu is just like 60% Obi by never OBi...

Obi takes time to. Meet the ordinary ppl while he was governor... Tinubu is an emperor....

Obi will never seek to dominate and control the NASS.. ND we will withness the most vibrant NASS in history...

In all, I must say tinubu is doing very well, but someone else can do better...

I like your last paragraph. Some people can't just admit that he gets somethings right.

Though I don't totally agree with you in the area of infrastructure. Are the project's price overbloated? Yes but he is still doing something.

Obi was my choice in that election but Tinubu is doing better than the disaster I was expecting.

Which particular market are you talking about?
The US, China, Iran or the EU? Petrol prices vary significantly depending on the market.

Bro u dnt get it... Coruption is Nigeria single biggest problem... Not stealing state funds ND using it for exactly the purpose it was meant will mk life far far better for slot of ppl...

U really do underestimate corupt bro... It is a cancarworm... It will sink the country.. ND tinubu is so promoting it... He his divisive.. like he broadened the divide btw ethnic groups...

We are a different ppl that need nation cohesion to survive... Tinubu is doing the opposite, u may say it's small evil. Until u read what caused Liberian wR that lasted 11years...

Do u know the acute house problem we are facing nation wide... That 15 trillion will do a whole lot to address them
..?

But such monies are wasted in over bloated contract for not urgently neccessry roads even when all the country is crying against it..

Do u know that almost no policCe unit have a drone for servellance, no vvtv camera on streets to capture criminals... Alot of things need b done instead of pocketing funds for general use...

Guy, coruption is was Dan bad economy...
