How does the point system work please?yes he meant permanent stay.
With a phd in Japan. PR is almost certain.
As phd graduates over exceed the points requirement ofr HSP visa(highly skilled visa)
After holding the HSP vsisa for 1 year, you can apply for PR.
Too easy, no country does it this easy.

It's the same with the point based system and it has its peculiar requirements. The younger one is, the greater the points.

It's not so automatic after a year. But yes, compared to peer nations, it's very easy and straightforward.

If i am not mistaken, the point-based system is for the HSP visa (Highly Skilled Visa).
If you get 80 points and apply for the HSP Visa in say for example Y2024/25, you qualify to apply for the PR visa (eijuken) the next fiscal year Y2025/26.

With a Phd degree from a Japanese University, the points you easily qualify for towards the HSP visa are;
1. Phd Degree - 30 points
2. Graduated from Japanese University - 10 points
3. **Research achievements (3 papers) - 20/15 points

** a Phd graduate must publish 3 papers to graduate in Japan. so your papers automatically gives you 15/20 extra points.

So phd from a Japanese university gives you additional easy - 55/60 points before considering other mandatory criterias such as
age, salary, professional career etc.
So with these almost all phd graduates in Japan are over-qualified for the HSP Visa (80 points) . Thats how phd graduates in Japan quickly qualify to apply for PR.

My humble 2 cents

Largely correct with some modifications.

You don't have to be on the HSP visa to apply for the point system. The standard bunseki and kokusai gyomu visa status also qualifies one to apply for PR via the point system.

It's not a must to publish three papers as a PhD student before graduation. This depends on the university and most importantly, the department/supervisor. Nevertheless, the more papers, the greater the points.

If you have the millions for it then go ahead, if not just decline the admission and target national universities, if you're below 35 years you may secure some generous scholarships, go through the StudyinJapan portal as Mr Gerrard suggested 👍

Well detailed information regarding your career and also include taxes, criminal record and i think if am not mistaken, the Japanese language proficiency. Your annual tax return(should be around 3m 💹 not too sure about this figure), certificate for tax payment.
Waiting time ranges from 5months and above.

Please can you advice me on how to get a cheap school in Japan for bachelor course
Gerrard59:
Yes, for those interested in quality education, access to world class labs and facilities, renowned professors in their fields; all of these come with low tuition fees compared to the likes of Australia, Canada or the UK. Even Central and Southern European countries don't come close as they charge foreign students way more than their citizens, aren't highly ranked as Japanese universities and have less than stellar facilities. Meanwhile, here, the tuition fees for national universities and even public universities are the same for both citizens and foreigners (due to be changed soon). Also, the visa process is straightforward and almost a guarantee once the Certificate of Eligibility has been delivered.

I politely replied the prof that physical original hardcopy documents are sensitive and irreplaceable to send via courier to another country, and i was under the impression that original documents are only presented after admission is granted, reason i sent the scanned copies of my original documents. It seems he informed the admission committee because this morning, i received this email (Urgent request) ..... University: Application Documents for Research Student (Oct 2025)
from the student affairs division(kokusai) cc the prof email which i have since replied.

Job
One recruiter that ghosted me also replied: Hi ......,
Thank you for your patience to my reply!
I was checking requirement with the manager and turns out they need someone who is a tech lead..
Can we keep in touch in case other opportunities come up?

Thank you once again Blackbriar and Gerrard59, i will keep you guys updated
My application got approved, and 3 days later I received email from my uni's immigration department/students pre-arrival assistant with link and login info to fill COE application form amongst others which I filled and chose Lagos as my visa application center. I do monitor the portal daily to track the progress which is still at campus procedures. I was hoping my CoE would be out by at most, 2nd week of August. Yesterday Friday July, I received a notification that I should update my visa application center as there's no Japan embassy in Lagos, rather Abuja. I replied that Japan now have a JVAC (Japan Visa Application Center) in Lagos under the authority of Japan embassy in Abuja. I attached both official website and physical locations.
Initially, I was hoping my CoE would be ready latest 2nd week of August. I have now gone ahead to download the visa form so as to get used to it and get ready when my CoE is out. I have equally attached the screenshot for your guidance, Cc Blackbriar and Gerrard59 can I use my NIN here: ID number issued to you by your government, ?

Yes, use your NIN.

It is a surprise there are now centres outside the embassy to apply for a visa. During my time when I applied for the visa twice (both were granted), I never saw such. Everything was conducted at the embassy.

Since it is the weekend, send a reply to the same address with the direct link to the embassy and where the embassy made that announcement. This is to further prove that such an approved centre exists.

Best of wishes! Once the COE is granted, a visa is certain.

Please at what point does prospective applicants show POF?

To the school admissions team. The professor might or would ask the student how s/he intends to fund his/her studies/living expenses. But ultimately, before the COE application commences, the POF (including sources and total amount) would be analysed.

You're right 👍 💯
My supervisor/professor asked me, I told him self funding, he assured me I would get a part-time job. He talked about scholarships & politely asked me of my age 😂, as there are scholarship opportunities & age could be a factor. It was during my COE application I saw where to upload my 3 months bank statement(in jpeg or png & NOT pdf) which should be equal to or above 100kjpy x 6

My program is for 6 months, so my living expenses is 100k Japanese yen per month * duration of my study which is 6 months. So that's what I meant by 100kjpy * 6. Living expenses differs from city to city, some are within the range, lower or more.

Max three months or more, depending on the prefecture. It is expected that once the COE is dispatched, you are expected to be issued the visa. Give it a week between the delivery of the COE at the visa application centre and visa issuance. During my time, visas were issued within three working days.

For Japan, to be issued a resident visa, the COE is the ultimate.

Since the visa application process has changed, I have no idea. Previously, you could send a representative (a proxy) with the slip issued after submitting your visa application at the embassy to pick up your visa or passport (if the visa isn't issued).

I dont think So.

Dependents need COE as well and this may take 3 - 6 months after master student puts in the application.
Some of the documents masters students wioud required to apply for the COE would need to come from the University.
So until on ground for enrolment, not possible to start application.
