Just when I thought I was getting tired of too much exposure to Norse history and mythology..... Amazon brings this one up my radar and all I can do is salivate for something I was complaining about cos I want more Greek/Roman stories. 😅

Erik Bloodaxe?? Son of King Harald FineHair? Feed me more pls.
What's more? It's written and produced by VIKINGS & VALHALLA show runner, Michael Hirst. 🤤🤤

Hope Amanda Waller will be in this. grin

Viola Davis portrayal of the character is spot on. Woman is annoying at the same time, admirable.

Because I already know the story( the real life version). Unless there is another twist at the ending, I just can't continue.

To Kill A Monkey (2025)

Idea...100%... Crass:100% Execution: 0%.

I didn’t want to be overly critical with this, but this was, in fact, a Kemi Adetiba imprint, a supposedly accomplished filmmaker in these parts and a Netflix-commissioned show, for that matter.

The title, "To Kill A Monkey," might actually be the most apt and cleverly thought-out aspect of the entire project. The euphemism was nuts, considering the supposed subject matter. Unfortunately, that's where the fun ended.

The central theme of the show was Cybercrime , which I thought was a very important narrative to explore at this point in time. But if you weren't paying close attention, you'd think this was just another gang/drug turf war flick. It follows two friends with contrasting personalities, who are driven by misfortune into the world of cybercrime. I thought that was a solid premise... only if they had stuck with it.

The show juggled so many plotlines, attempting to tell stories in layers that should have built toward something meaningful. The problem? They were just building , with no plan on how to stick the landing. By the third act, each scene felt like it belonged to a completely different show.

I liked King of Boys, but Kemi Adetiba is starting to behave like a drug dealer who struck gold with a bomb hit and now keeps flooding the market with the same formula, just in different packaging , too scared to evolve and find something new. You could clearly see King of Boys DNA all over this , and it felt wildly out of place for the story at hand. To put it in perspective, the opening scene was this elaborate occultic ritual, that ended up meaning absolutely nothing.

The performances were okay-ish. The two leads, Buchi Franklin and William Benson, had enough chemistry to carry the show, but there's this new-age style of acting in Nollywood that I personally detest , it’s overdone, overly crass, and just doesn’t feel believable. It lacks a certain refinement. The show was also filled with way too many unnecessary characters , chief among them, an “Old Taker” played by Chidi Mokeme. He had no business being in this. It epitomizes my feeling that this would’ve worked better as a movie rather than a show. Because with a series format and approx. 8 hours to burn, all the unnecessary characters had more time to waste and added zero value to the story.

The production value was clean, as you'd expect from a Netflix-funded show. The pomp and props were shiny all sitting on top of a bad, not-so-well-thought-out script. And maybe that’s exactly what I should start expecting any time I see Netflix attached to a local show. 😩

Each episode ended with “Written and Directed by Kemi Adetiba” , which might be the core issue here. These big-name filmmakers often get that coveted Netflix sit-down and the heavy seed money, only to turn around and deliver polished garbage. If only they allowed other creative voices into the writers' room, this might have gone somewhere. I’ve genuinely seen Zikoko YouTube short stories that are better written than this.

This is probably why the technical aspects of our filmmaking haven’t progressed as much as the social media clout would have you believe.

Anyway, this was a tedious watch and honestly, I wouldn’t have missed a thing if I hadn’t bothered. So I truly wonder what all the praise I’m seeing littered across X is for...

A special... special... mess. 🚮✨
