Charlie Boy Does not Deserve a Bus Stop in Lagos

My name is Mrs Ebunola Adebusoye. I'm the Deputy Women leader of Indigenous Lagos Teachers Association

I write this in my personal opinion. My group has not authorised me to do this on its behalf, but I have to do it after consultation with the Lagos General Secretary, at least to avoid organisational discipline. I'm happy I was given to go-ahead to write my own personal opinion.

I speak on the reigning issue of the renaming of Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos to Badoo Bus stop, an exercise executed by the Chairman, Bariga LCDA.

First of all, I thank the Chairman for living up to the expectations of the people of Gbagada where Charles Oputa, alias Charly Boy also referred to as Area Father lived and tormented the residents for many years. As a Lagos indigene and from the Royal home, we are proud of what the Chairman did.

At 65 and as a retired School teacher, I have a sense of what morality means.

Having a Bus Stop with the name Charly Boy is an attempt to glorify immorality of the highest order.

Firstly, Area Father never had a Bus Stop allocated to him at Gbagada. When he moved here many years ago, the first thing he did was to pull down the existing Bus Stop signpost which was second Pedro named after a prominent Lagos family that had put in sweat and blood to the growth, fame and rise of Lagos.

Charly Boy was never officially allocated any Bus Stop. That is the truth. Calling the place Charly Boy was his own creation.

Secondly, Charly boy lived in this area as as a little beast. He tormented the residents, turned the place into a jungle, a hub for hard drugs including cocaine and hooliganism. I lived close to him for about 5 years. Myself and my husband had to relocate to Ikorodu because of this nuisance.

He was an extremely bad influence on youths and the core values of Yoruba.

I recall his attack on a 70 year old Mr Akinyemi who challenged his rascality. He ordered his thugs to beat up the old man who he stripped naked.

I recall the children of this old man who came to challenge him were also beaten up.

These actions if taken in any civilised world would have been challenged by the relevant authority and Charly Boy would have been sent to jail.

He was contemptuous of Yoruba people who he derided and insulted so often.

He has no respect for the tradition and values of his host.

He owed his landlord 7 years rent which he never paid. The landlady, a Yorubaland woman died of hypertension

Charly Boy converted the rented apartment into a studio that his wife managed. He pulled down the fence and converted the building to his own shape.

He would insult and harrass the woman, playing music all day and all night. The woman died.

People who support Charly Bus stop should tell us what single contributions he made to Lagos or to the people of Gbagada. Monuments should be named after heroes not hooligans and common criminals.

We hereby caution and warn those who think they can continue to spit on Lagos heritage to beware of the wrath of our ancestors and at the fullness of time, we shall challenge them BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY.

Stop all this big epistle. Is Lagos still a no man’s land? Yes or no?
I've noticed most APC paid agents don't reside in Nigeria, including you.

I pity the clowns in Nigeria who fall for your rants and tribal bigotry.

You guys are setting a dangerous trend that'll boomerang.

Ironfaceman:
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of
Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, has criticised the
ongoing trend of renaming streets and public
spaces in Lagos State without following
constitutional procedures or consulting residents,
describing the actions as unlawful and
undemocratic.
In a statement issued yesterday, Falana condemned
recent instances, including the renaming of the
popular “Charley Boy Bus Stop” to “Baddo Bus Stop”
by the former chairman of Bariga Local Council
Development Area, LCDA, Mr Kolade Alabi. He also
cited reports of two streets being named after
President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide
Sanwo-Olu, as well as industrialist Aliko Dangote’s
alleged naming of streets in honour of the late Mr
Herbert Wigwe and President Tinubu.
According to Falana, these actions violate the
provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended),
which clearly vests the responsibility for naming
and numbering streets exclusively in local
government councils. He referenced a key legal
precedent, Chief Obidi Ume v. Abuja Metropolitan
Management Council, in which a court ruled that
only the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, has
the authority to assign names to streets and roads
within its jurisdiction.
“The usurpation of the exclusive functions of local
governments on street naming by certain
individuals and Local Council Development Areas in
Lagos State cannot be justified under the Nigerian
Constitution,” Falana stated.
He particularly faulted the renaming of the Charley
Boy Bus Stop, which he described as a landmark
historically named by the Bariga and Gbagada
communities.
“Charley Boy Bus Stop acquired its name
sociologically due to its functionality and the
positive impact which Charley Boy has historically
made in the area,” Falana noted. “Renaming it
without consulting the Bariga and Gbagada people
smacks of authoritarianism.”

The rights lawyer also expressed concern that
Lagos has left untouched many colonial-era names
associated with oppression, while targeting names
that honour Nigerians who have made positive
contributions to society.
Falana urged the legislative arms of local
governments across Lagos to take immediate steps
to end arbitrary renaming of streets and to introduce
transparent processes, including public hearings, to
ensure community involvement in such decisions.
“Streets should not be renamed arbitrarily to please
the whims and caprices of political leaders or to
promote ethnic chauvinism, especially in a
cosmopolitan capital city like Lagos,” he said.

You're educated but still talking like illiterate even faulting an SAN. Nothing concerned me with renaming of streets or bus stops but what you wrote caught my attention. LCDA and LGA aren't same. Nigerian Constitution recognizes LGA but Bariga LCDA or any other LCDA is an illegal entity. Don't bother because I won't reply you.
Cry if e too pain you.

Baba Falana abeg leave them. I spoke about this earlier but some bigots accused me of being Igbo in disguise. Why not build new roads and name them after Olamide? Renaming streets doesn’t add any positive value, misplaced priority.

'Streets should not be renamed arbitrarily to please the whims and caprices of political leaders or to promote ethnic chauvinism, especially in a cosmopolitan capital city like Lagos'
Falana, thank you sir. That some people called Lagos no man's land doesn't mean no one owns it. Yoruba land is a yoruba land but a cosmopolitan city such as Lagos should not be about ethnic chauvinisn. Come to Owerri or go to Awka today and you will find out that non indigenes have bought up lands and are developing them. The two towns now belongs to everybody and can be said to be no man's land at the moment.

Hmmm! Another angle.

BTW, if Anambra renamed streets bearing Ebonyi names and people didn't complain, why is there so much hullabaloo over the one done in Lagos?

Funny thing is that the names may change again some years down the line.

Thank you so much sir. You contribution to this topic is well regarded.

Charly boy was a rugged activist who protested against the likes of Abacha and was jailed.

Also his nick name came from okada riders who he fought hard to have okada business legalised.

You may not like the messenger but appreciate the message.
I have been waiting to see if Good people of Yoruba land have no single sane personality.. thank God someone came to the rescue.

Politicians have destroyed even the reasoning of most people. Bigotry and tribalism are two ugly monsters that many have adopted for just no gain.
Lawlessness is now the order of the day. Even the government breaks the law, forgetting that one day, the society will be fixed and they will answer to all these

It just shows how unserious we are as a nation! Won fi ete sile won npa lapalapa! (Leaving leprosy to treat ringworm!). Misfits rule the land. Men of little minds! We have jettisoned our indigenous wisdom. We practice politics of tribe and grab, divide, rule and loot and enslave while the victims support their oppressors.
