Why Is Visa So Expensive? by Nnamdipapa(op):
This is a question no one is asking, and I believe Nigerian government is taking advantage of visitors to the country. I am trying to apply for a 30-day visit to Nigeria for my son, he does not have his Nigerian passport yet and the process to obtain a passport is very cumbersome and will require us travelling to the Capital city where the embassy is located.

Now, I am being charged about $455 Canadian dollars just to apply for a visit visa of 30 days. Visit visa to Canada is $100CAD, to the US and the UK is not as much from my understanding, why is our government charging exorbitant fees for a visit visa and why are the fees in US dollars? Last I checked, we don't spend dollars in Nigeria, I believe strengthening the Naira should involve encouraging people to trade in the Nigerian currency. I believe this is not patriotic of our government.

Does anyone have any idea if i can straight out apply for an emergency travel certificate in lieu of visa since i will be processing his passport in Nigeria?

Visa policies are about repricocity. How much does Canadian embassy in Lagos/Abujacharge Nigerians applying to visit Canada? It will be close to that. And they charge in Canadian dollars but payable in local naira. You also can pay online at Nigerian immigration website in Naira. Good thing is that your child can process Nigerian passport easier now before the 30days visa expires

Not close, $100CAD for a visit visa with $CAD80 for biometrics. A total of $180 which is less than half the amount being charged by Nigerian embassy. This looks like a money grab from the Nigerian government and secondly, why are the fees in USD? Every country charges in the local currency in order to bost the currency, why are we not trading in our own currency for visa application fees?

I am calling them on Monday to see if he is qualified for an Emergency one-way travel document as that is way cheaper than paying $455 for a visa.

I just checked and I see we can apply for a Nigerian Emergency Travel Certificate which takes 10 business day to process for a fee of $155Cad even though he never had a Nigerian passport. I will try that.

You probably had visited a third party website for your application and not the Nigeria immigration own. The actual visa fee is USD $275 which is 376 Cad dollar. Also note all payment are done in USD via the immigration website . Also note, if you are applying for your son who is minor, he must be accompanied, which invariably means you have to pay for additional visa fee for your self. Your best bet is to go for the emergency Travel certificate (ETC).

.
Just get Emergency Travel certificate (ETC) for your child. If you are to do E visa, you are going to pay additional fee for accompanying him.
However, you can reach me at bankyseun2@gmail.com for further assistance.

I know about ETC but U already bought our tickets for Nigeria and there wont be enough time to mail in the documents and get the ETC on time. My faults for delaying this process and will get him a Nigerian passport on landing.
