If a structure collapses in a university, then there is serious problem.

Can i ask a question.

How many years can a building stay for it to be called an old building?
Or what is the age-duration of a building or house?

Thank you.
Guestmale:
This is serious, how old is the building, thank God no life lost. The cause of this collapse should be investigated by an independent professional body and ascertain if there is any foul play.

Indeed, television can be replaced, life can't. Lost body part can't be replaced too
Exactly my thoughts. God bless u and more wisdom to u.

Which soil?

Soil kwa?

Can you not see the collapsed structure?

You see iron inside?

Just a look at the concrete and sparse reinforcement bars, we can see that it's simply corruption and bad construction practices that brought down the lodge.

Id not that this is Nigeria, people ought to go to jail for this.
Please kindly educate yourself before arguing ignorantly.

I knew one prof will come here and type this.

You are talking to a structural engineer with over 20 years of experience.

I was waiting for one of you know-it-all geniuses to come and prove what you don't know.

Oya, go and look at the video again and tell me if the rebars in that collapsed structure look adequate.

In case you don't know, most, if not all, cases of building collapse in Nigeria result from people cutting corners. Even the soil you mentioned, people will not do a geotech investigation, or they will ignore it, or simply not follow the foundation design.

Don't people build on waterlogged areas and the buildings stand? As long as a building is designed and constructed properly, it will stand. If it's on weak soil, it is designed specially for that soil.

I hope you understand what I'm saying?

Are you even an engineer or builder?

What if it happened at night when the students were sleeping. And this is a Federal institution, The Government is only busy in renaming institutions and not in the structural integrity of their infrastructures .
This is a private hostel outside the school I think

Hope no life was lost?

This might be as a result of inferior or substandard building materials and poor supervision .
No life was lost cos it was noted on time and everyone ran out before the collapse

Arrest and persecute the contractor...

Are you Coren certified? If yes, I'm surprised at this your statement. Do you understand root cause analysis and load bearing capacities?

20 years experience, but you can tell by looking at a video, the cause of a building collapse. No test, no investigation whatsoever.

With experts like you, perhaps we should scrap all engineering failure investigations.

Yes.

I'm COREN certified.

It's possible to see the poorly reinforced structure from the video.

Are you not looking at the same pics and video I'm seeing?

See, I'm done arguing with you.

Carry your fellow experts to examine the soil.

You're just loud mouthed. What's empirical about looking at videos and determining cause of failure? Do you not know that the shear forces and bending moments acting on the beams as a result of the concrete collapse can distort the original structure of the beams and its associated components?

Please don't use this half baked approach to calculate loads on structural analysis and design. It's basic engineering to know that you can only determine sizing of load carrying beams and rods from only engineering SF and BM calculations, not merely looking at structure "inside your head".

And if you will humbly go to my original comment and read again, I clearly said it should be investigated to determine cause of failure, which could also include the point you've made, but by virtue of your "20 years experience" you have been cast in your old ways, which is a safety hazard in its self.

Have a great day.

Are you an engineer?

You're just speaking too much English.

I'm sure you're not one if you think experience does not matter.

"Shear forces and bending moments" 😁

You sound like a 2nd year student!

If all what I said to you, as an engineer is "too much English" then I'm afraid maybe you should consider furthering your education in Engineering and maybe English language.

It's sad that you've chosen this path of daftness. The things you learnt in your second year of engineering becomes irrelevant to your engineering practice?

Maybe I should explain how Finite element analysis is used to predict failure distribution? Or that's year 3 engineering too?

Your structural engineering was just one module of my engineering course. That's all I will say.
Oooooh......you must be a bloody architect.

You took a course in Structural Engineering, one course.......

Hmmmmm........ No point joining issues with you anymore. Argue with yourself.

I'm out.
