Change Of Lagos Street Names: Is Lagos Playing With The Tail Of A Tiger by kettykin(op): 10:23pm On Jul 27, 2025
What would be the potential economic, social, and political implications if the Igbo people across Nigeria and the diaspora decided to boycott all products and services of companies headquartered in Lagos this is including schools, churches, FMCGs, fintechs, and other institutions as a form of protest against perceived bigotry and actions like the renaming of streets? How might such a boycott unfold, and what are the possible consequences for both sides?

A mass Igbo boycott of Lagos-headquartered companies would be a seismic move with far-reaching economic, social, and political consequences. Here's a breakdown of how such a boycott could play out:

Economic Implications
For Lagos-based Companies:

Revenue Disruption: Igbo consumers form a major part of Nigeria’s consumer economy, particularly in the southeast and south-south regions. FMCG companies (e.g., Nestlé, Unilever), fintechs (e.g., Paystack, Flutterwave), and telecoms would likely experience significant revenue shortfalls.

Supply Chain Strain: Many Igbos dominate distribution and retail logistics. A disruption in these networks could paralyze product movement in the east and beyond.

Brand Damage: Accusations of enabling or being complicit in ethnic bias could hurt long-term brand equity, especially in an increasingly woke, social media-driven landscape.

For the Igbo Community:

Short-term Inconvenience: Alternatives to dominant Lagos-based companies may be limited, especially in fintech, telecom, and education sectors.

Shift Toward Indigenous Innovation: Over time, this boycott could accelerate the growth of Igbo-owned brands, startups, and services, creating a parallel economic ecosystem.

Social & Cultural Impact
Deepened Ethnic Divides: This would escalate already-tense ethnic sentiments and could lead to retaliatory actions in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.

Cultural Awakening: The movement may also awaken a sense of cultural pride and push for self-reliance, similar to the 1950s Aba Women's Riot or the 1967 Biafra economic survival efforts.

Religious and Educational Fallout: Boycotting Lagos-based churches and schools (many of which are multiregional or globally affiliated) may fracture spiritual and intellectual alliances, possibly creating space for Igbo-owned institutions to rise in prominence.

Political Repercussions
Heightened National Dialogue: A mass boycott would force political leaders to confront long-ignored grievances, especially around federal equity, marginalization, and restructuring.

International Attention: If well-coordinated, such a movement could attract global media and human rights attention—particularly if framed around systemic exclusion or cultural erasure.

Reform or Retaliation?: The federal and state governments could either respond with reforms (dialogue, policy shifts, street name reversals), or escalate the conflict with political crackdowns, economic pressure, or propaganda.

Strategic Outcomes
Short-Term Chaos: Price volatility, product unavailability, and media outrage.

Medium-Term Adaptation: Companies may try to localize operations outside Lagos or create Igbo-targeted PR strategies.

Long-Term Transformation: Emergence of a dual economic axis—Lagos vs. Onitsha/Nnewi/Aba—as a counterbalance in Nigerian commerce.

Conclusion
Such a boycott would not be without sacrifice, but if carefully orchestrated, it could serve as a powerful protest tool—not just to demand equity but to shift power structures and redefine economic narratives in Nigeria. However, without clear goals and strategic leadership, it risks becoming a divisive act with limited gains.

It is not about hitting us hard at the heart. It is about teaching bigots a lesson they will never forget even after the have left this world to heaven or earth. The same way Israel is teaching Palestinians lessons they will no doubt take to after life. If this bigotry is left untreated, Igbos will be attacked 2027 elections and prevented from voting their choice. Igbos will be harassed with out any provocation. Some people have even taken the bigotry to Ghana and South Africa

It is really a bad development. Even as a proud, honorable and highly esteemed son of the Yoruba ethnic group, I see this development born out of hate.

It is a big setback and a shame on those who cooked up and executed the hate filled agenda.

It’s not a secret that other ethnic groups have streets and roads named after them in states they happen to non-indigenes.

These is a disaster that would NEVER yield good results. It is the result of electing incompetent leaders who have nothing to offer but to stoke hate. They are bereft of innovative ideas to develop their people and environment.

His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) needs to step-in on this matter and make sure all name changes are reverted.

On behalf of Honorable and high esteemed self, I sincerely apologize to all Igbo’s within and outside the shores of Nigeria. I never believed it could degenerate to this level.

Wait till they do massive retren.chment of non-Yorubas working in Lagos State service including schools, then cry us a lagoon..
It's like you don't know the meaning of "O to ge", our people are saying enough is enough.

Nigeria can't be robbing South West to pay South East and Igbos will still be migrating to South West to shortchange Yorubas of the meagre resources allocated to the region (despite generating the highest revenue for FG).

While this is happening in Lagos, counter retrenchment will be taking place in companies owned by igbos and in the Eastern states , particularly Enugu

How many Yorubas are employed in Igboland?. When Abia man can't get job in Anambra State service, is it Yorubas that will now get?.
How many Yorubas are employed in Igbo-owned companies compared to the millions of Igbos working in Yoruba-owned companies?. or you think employing Yoruba people as drivers and gatemen count in this context?.

The topic should be.. you Igbos have finally stepped on the tiger's tail.

The more reason Lagosians will deliberately stop calling it Charley Boy bus stop is because of all dis una boasting that it will still be called Charley Boy Bus stop. 😁 You will see how the name Charley Bus stop will fade away just like when Tinubu changed our National Anthem and some people were boasting that it will have not effect. Lol 😂

This should be my first reaction to this issue.

How many times have the names of the street have been changed? Is this current changing the final changing?

Why should people from a state be doing something to protect their identity and then some squatters would want to impose their opinion, say wetin happen.

Respect is a reciprocal

The arrogant is really annoying. Like are they the one to tell us what to do in our own land.

How can pride and ego be making some people to be disrespectful without considering the consequences

Check around , look around, the complains from different quarters have been same culprits yet you are not even interested in checking inward . Can all of them be wrong?

That's none of your business. You are not in any position to be questioning our decision about our land.

Please, you guys should stop this disrespectful nature of always want to impose your opinion on others. We don't pokenose into your internal affairs or dictate what you people should do.

People are saying same thing and you people are not even interested in adjusting. Can all of them be wrong and you are the only one who have been right.

Respect your host, that won't stop your glory

Do you know that Charley boy gave over 2500 motorcycles free to empower people around Charley boy bus stop area in Gbagada.

He gave a lot of people scholarships in that area and took people off the streets.

Charly boy moved into the area in 1989 and left the area around 2006.

Charly boy is the spirit of Charly bus stop. He didn’t name the bus stop, the people named the bus stop in his honor because of his impact.

A lot of people benefited from him.

Facts don’t lie!

He should go and retrieve his motorcycle from those he gave it to.

Stop questioning people's decisions on the matter regarding their land. Before the street was named after Charley Boy, do you even have a clue about the previous name if it was a Yoruba name?..

Everything don't have to go your way all the time. You win some and lose some.

This op is funny grin as if it's easy to mobilise any Nigerian tribe to stand for a cause. How is it going to be achievable? This one that years of killings by herdsmen have not stopped Nigerians from boycotting cow meat

You need to think about this

How has the monday lockdown impacted the Nigerian or lagos economy? i will say less

What is the population of Igbos in Lagos...Imagine they boycott businesses..what will be the impact on these businesses?

Do you live in the South East ? You want Soludo to go to ibadan and appoint you in the state civil service where you don't leave there. Dey play.

Do you know that a lot of Yoruba are working in Air peace. Majority of staffs there are Yorubas. Go and verify!

How many Igbos are working in Yoruba company ? Show me a big Yoruba company where Igbos are majority as staff just like Airpeace.

Even in your churches. You can't appoint a non Yoruba pastor to heads the church outside the SW. Eg is Redeemed Christian Church of God.

If tinubu cannot appoint Igbos in government, is it the Yorubas in private sector that will do that ?

Bunch of insecure people. Chasing what is not chasing you.

You are on your own . The government elected by the people has taken a decision supported by the majority .
I hope you know Nigeria is a federation and the FG has no right to tell a state what to do.
All these wailings are of no use at this point .
