“I’m Still Here” – Asisat Oshoala Shuts Down Retirement Rumours After WAFCON Victory

Super Falcons star striker, Asisat Oshoala, has firmly denied rumors that she is retiring from international football following Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 win over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Speaking to reporters in Morocco, the six-time African Women’s Player of the Year dismissed the speculation as unfounded and baseless.

“I don’t know where that came from, but agenda must agend. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on,” Oshoala stated.

A Veteran Leader in Nigeria’s 12th WAFCON Title
The 30-year-old forward, who was part of Nigeria’s final 23-player squad for the tournament, played a vital leadership role throughout the competition — providing experience, energy, and motivation even from the bench.

Her contribution helped the Super Falcons secure their record-extending 12th WAFCON title, further solidifying Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.

Oshoala’s Remarkable Career Journey
Oshoala’s international career kicked off in 2013 and gained international spotlight in 2014 when she starred in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, earning the Golden Ball and Golden Boot. That same year, she was instrumental in helping Nigeria win the African Women’s Championship.

She holds the record as the first African player to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups and now boasts four WAFCON titles: 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.

Still a Pillar in Nigerian Football
Despite playing fewer minutes in recent tournaments, Asisat Oshoala continues to be one of the most influential players in African football, and her legacy remains unmatched. With her recent comments, fans can breathe a sigh of relief — she’s not going anywhere just yet.

To me, Perpetual played in the era of highly amateurish opponents in other African females soccer teams. Azizat is way better and more prolific than her. Barcelona did not sign her for no reason.

Does anyone know why Oshoala is not given the captain band of super falcons despite the fact she has been in the team years before the current captain, and even brought her to limelight
During the lead-up to the WAFCON 2024 campaign, Oshoala was recovering from injuries and was not very active. Ajibade on the other hand is in top form. Has the ability to inspire teammates, organize play, and maintain team focus under pressure.

Abeg retire let the younger ones get same opportunity you got
Same with ordega they are just accumulating numbers, we have young strikers and wingers that could have replaced them

30 years of age is still relatively young to retire.
One reality now is that she's no longer a starter.
Besides, the hunger of those new girls upfront is massive.
Anyhow she decides, she has played a big role in the development of Nigeria's football and putting the our name on global map.
I think first Nigerian to win UEFA Women Champions League

Luke Shaw has been in united before Bruno and Maguire but has always been denied the captain band.
Same goes for Mbape in France. Many other clubs and countries.

Leadership takes more than seniority and experience; it's more of capability and skill.

Bcus of her non chalant attitude. She chooses to come play qualifiers and friendlies anytime she likes. Rasheedat Ajibade was always available when call upon

Yes you're right in most of your assertion, but in Oshoala's case it was her non chalant attitude that cost her the captain's armband. She chooses when to come play for qualifiers and friendlies, while Ajibade was always available

Asisat Oshoala you have tried and contributed your quota to the he female national team but I think it's time to call it quit now that the ovation is still loud. The bench role they played you thru out the tournament should give you a sign you're no longer valuable to the team. And instead of to be shamefully ousted from the team it's better you resign now.

What record does PN holds that Oshoala hasn't dusted? It's Perpetual that never got to the level Assisat is at currently and she's still playing. Meaning more records might still come.
