Yoruba Community Celebrates Amala Day In Imo state by jmoore(op): 8:29am On Jul 28, 2025
Seeing my kinsmen and women enjoying Amala Day with Adire attire to match today (Sunday, 27th July) at Owerri brings back awesome memories of my stay at Prefab Estate.
Owerri, Imo state is where I had my foundation of learning the Igbo language and culture. I was there for two full years.

Aladimma was not far from us. That was where FUTO was before they moved to Obinze. General Hospital was there and I hope it is still there. We went to Ikenegbu for church services.
WAEC buiding shared a fence with us and was almost completed when I left Owerri.
Radio programs from Imo Broadcasting Corporation helped me a lot in understanding the language.

If you haven't travelled, you mightn't understand some of these nostalgic feelings!

They are exercising their right as a bonafide citizens of the Great Nigeria.

They are not asking Imo state government to stop teaching Ibo in their schools.

They are not calling Imo state no mans land.

They are not installing Oni-Imo of Imo kingdom.

Last time I travelled to my village,I saw many Yorubas in my village and I just laugh.

U see tribalism,it is very bad..a taylor in my hamlet from Ekiti state has a farm land he is farming on,he said he prays to find a woman to marry here.

He personally told me,his parents were against his decision to settle in the east but he never knew they were all wrong.

He was the one who sewed my dad's clothes during my aunty's burial.

In our community market,I met them plenty...but the way we IGBOS shield strangers,it is against our tradition and culture to endanger a sojourner in our land.
That is why u will hear this saying in igbo land as a whole that "Onye ọbịa enweghị onye iro"

We protect strangers, guard them, feed them when necessary and fight our brothers and sisters because of them.

I am not making out words. That is igbos for u any day.
We don't think of anyone dominating us,we believe in division of labour.

Who are the organisers?, Ibos. If Yoruba joined in to participate, there's no offense in it.

Wonderful celebration of our brothers from the South West in Igbo land 🤗

Igbos are always welcome to eat amala with them whenever they are celebrating their local delicacy.
