Learn to read and do some research on your own
Every sane person kniws this is a lie.

Debt was 113 billion usd in 2023
Now is under 100 billion usd
Don't believe me, but research and come back.
Where did the op mention 2023 debt profile? What I saw was 2015 before APC and now after a decade of APC. Also the naira equivalent of the loan as at then is totally different from what's obtainable now, so why are we still procuring FX loans instead of sticking to naira?

No one can borrow their way out of economic problems. No individual. No country. You fix up your leakages and bad habits first and then you use borrowing to scale up.

malali:
What President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration calls “economic reform” is, in truth, a grand pyramid of debt, mortgaging Nigeria’s future to fund present-day consumption. The numbers are staggering, but more troubling is their trajectory: ₦12.6 trillion in debt under Jonathan, now spiraling toward ₦200 trillion under Tinubu.

And still, no dams, no ports, no bullet trains, no mega factories.

Nigeria’s debt today isn’t buying wealth-generating infrastructure. Instead, it’s being channeled into:
• Subsidy offsets for petrol and food
• FX buffer injections to artificially hold the naira
• Civil service overhead
• Palliative funds with no long-term multiplier

From Republic to Debt Colony

While countries like Rwanda and Vietnam borrow to build, Nigeria borrows to breathe. Without clear repayment strategies or ROI-linked targets, this is not nation-building. It’s nation-leasing. Every Eurobond, every IMF draw, every China Exim agreement becomes a silent lien on:
• Future tax revenue,
• Future natural resource flows,
• And your children’s freedom to make fiscal decisions.

With over 60% of all national revenue now devoted to debt service, the budget for development has vanished. Hospitals are still underfunded. Schools still use chalkboards from 1994. The national grid still flickers like a dying candle.

Austerity by Proxy

The worst part? This debt does not lead to growth, but it imposes austerity:
• SMEs can’t borrow; banks prefer lending to government.
• Importers can’t hedge; the naira’s volatility kills inventory turnover.
• Investors won’t commit; they fear a forced debt restructuring like Ghana.

Ordinary Nigerians, meanwhile, are taxed like they live in Monaco but served like they live in Mogadishu.

A Social Explosion Waiting to Happen

History teaches us that countries with unsustainable debt + currency devaluation + youth unemployment are ticking time bombs.
Tunisia in 2011.
Greece in 2009.
Argentina perennially.
Nigeria is entering that fiscal Bermuda Triangle, with oil theft, food inflation, and zero savings buffers making the spiral irreversible unless checked.

The Ask

What the ADC is demanding isn’t revolutionary. It’s elementary due diligence:

• Disclose loan terms.
• Link each loan to a cash-generating outcome.
• Cap total external debt-to-GDP at 30%.
• Pause borrowing for at least 12 months.

Because without transparency, accountability, and productive use of capital, Nigeria isn’t just borrowing money. It’s borrowing time.

All of these in only two years by President Tinubu @officialABAT
1. Non-Revenue Generating Projects Dominate

Most projects listed – from roads to hospitals and irrigation are vital, yes, but they are not income-yielding assets. A nation cannot sustainably fund non-profit public works with foreign debt and expect to stay solvent. There’s no projected return on investment (ROI) on a dual carriageway or even a solar plant without PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) structure.

2. Debt is Being Used as a Band-Aid, Not Leverage
• According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria’s debt servicing cost is now over 60% of its revenue. This is fiscal suicide.
• The ₦200 trillion debt ceiling, mostly unhedged, means entire national budgets will soon go toward paying interest, with no principal reduction.

3. No Monetization Blueprint
• Where is the cashflow model for AKK gas pipeline?
• How do we monetize the Lafia Bypass or Kaduna Rail when Nigerians can’t afford ₦200 fuel or ₦1,200 train tickets?

Projects are built without private sector concession plans, foreign user partnerships, or exportable revenue. This is state-funded socialism disguised as infrastructure.

4. Inflation and Naira Collapse Still Unchecked
• If these projects were economically catalytic, we’d expect currency stabilization and increased investor confidence.
• Instead, foreign direct investment (FDI) has declined, inflation remains over 30%, and the Naira is falling faster than ever.
• This means the debt has failed to inspire confidence, a key marker of misdirected economic policy.

5. Repeat of the Buhari Trap
• This model mirrors Buhari’s infrastructure-without-revenue trap: build roads, rail, hospitals with Chinese/World Bank loans, and hope the economy somehow lifts itself.
• Tinubu has taken this model and multiplied the debt by 10x, but the economic impact is negligible.

Infrastructure is noble. But when you borrow $21 billion+ with no direct monetization plan, you’re creating legacy debt for consumption. It’s modern feudalism: spend now, mortgage the future.

I'm still not sure why we're borrowing foreign loans, previously it majorly was to import refined crude and to service banks who in turn service their customers. Now those two black holes have been shut, why are we then still borrowing foreign funds? Naira I can understand.....or is it that we're borrowing FX to service the ones Buhari borrowed?
We borrow for capital projects..

All these foreign loans should stop.
It appears as if there are a few people in the federal government and the lending institution who get commissions from these loans.
When the federal government takes external loans, they indirectly take money from the general Nigerian population through naira devaluation, and excessive inflation.

Your loans and policies are making Nigerians poorer. There is no evidence that your economy will normalise or that you can manage your debts.
Let's take a look at your debt servicing alone.
According to various reports from sources like the African Development Bank (AfDB) and analyses from media outlets citing the Debt Management Office (DMO), here's a breakdown.
Nigeria spent a total of N13.12 trillion on debt servicing in 2024. This represents a substantial 68% increase from the N7.8 trillion recorded in 2023. This figure also surpassed the budgeted allocation of N12.3 trillion for the year.
Debt servicing costs reached 4.1% of Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024, up from 3.7% in 2023
The debt servicing-to-federal government revenue ratio stood at 77.5% in 2024, a slight rise from 76.8% in 2023. This indicates that over three-quarters of the federal government's revenue went towards servicing its debt obligations.
Domestic Debt Service: N5.97 trillion, a 14.15% rise from 2023.
External Debt Service: $4.66 billion (equivalent to approximately N7.15 trillion at an exchange rate of N1,535.32/$1), a sharp increase of 167% from 2023.
