It may not be the MIL fault to be honest as I later realized she was a victim of trauma. She was traumatized by her husband who got her pregnant with severe abortions at the age of 14. He later abandoned her and always sends threats to her from the UK.

Guess you are trying to make light of his situation. While he was a free man, he could have walked out of the marriage and be free indeed but now, he's lost his freedom at least for a few years if he gets a good lawyer or for life if he doesn't get a good plea deal. I feel for him and his loved ones though.
