Now listen very well, before Oduduwa became king in Ile-Ife, there was the Obalufe, i.e. 'King' of Ife. Oduduwa supplanted him and established the 'Yoruba' dynasty that spread out from Ife. During all this period, what they had in Benin was the Ogiso dynasty, matter of fact there was nothing like Benin in existence at that period, the Ogisos ruled over the Igodomigodo empire.

Oduduwa s grandchild, Eweka was the first 'Oba' of Benin, who took the throne after his father Oranmiyan conquered the Ogisos and established an Obaship system after he'd renamed the place 'Benin' This much has been confirmed by no less than several Obas of Benin themselves, one of whom was Akenzua II (on record)
