We have now gone from Lagos was never a principal port to Lagos was a principal port.

Slavery from the coast of Lagos started in the 1500s if not earlier. Lagos was already rich from dealing with the Portugese, till the British arrived, and also continued the slave trade.

Summary: Lagos was already rich before the British arrived.
the so called wealth of Lagos then can't be what is in play now, the Benin kingdom was also wealthy then, modern Lagos commercial wealth cannot be the same wealth of the 1800, the colonial capital being former capital are more fundamental to it's current status now.

Zik was very limited. Calabar or PH would have rivalled or surpassed if it were made the regional capital.
Zik was an atypical greedy land grabbing Ibo man that had his eyes set on controlling Lagos .

It was Zik that vehemently rejected allowing all of Lagos to be under Western Nigeria.

Ojukwu who had declared his rogue Biafra was still salivating for Lagos to the point that he dared to invade and conquer it.

Zik"s greedy and his arrogance towards minority people was why he insisted on having Enugu as capital of eastern Nigeria.

As far back as 1951, the minorities in the defunct Eastern region began immediately agitating for their own region.

It's for this reason Zike neglected the coastal provinces and instead channel all resources to build a rural coal town in the interior of Ibo land as the capital.

Zik was shortsighted by his own typical Ibo arrogance and bigotry

The more you try so hard to convince yourself that Lagos was never a capital of Nigeria because one retarded egoat named Reno Omokri said it wasn't the more stvpid you all sound. Weather it is a small part of Lagos or the entire part of Lagos...LAGOS WAS THE FORMER CAPITAL OF NIGERIA BEFORE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MOVED IT TO ABUJA IN 1991, PERIOD.
Hope you know the comments you mentioned are from 2023

That you can quote a non-intellectual editable Wikipedia page as reference shows that you lack the intellectual depth wink
Calling Wikipedia non-intellectual shows your level of superior ignorance... everyone knows Lagos was the Capital of Nigeria, you were taught in School, Every country have a Capital city, ABUJA only became Capital city in 1991...no other state was declared Capital city apart from Lagos before it moved to ABUJA.

If you are still not educated enough to know this basic truth then am sorry I can't help you out of your self inflicted ignorance.

The Port of Lagos was the Busiest Port in West and Central Africa before the British ever arrived

Lord Lugard had Predicted in 1906 that Lagos was going to be an Economic Power in Africa
You mean the port owned and built by the Portuguese?

Any idea what made the development stop since 1999, such that Lagos is now a glorified ghetto with no pipe borne water, no free healthcare and no free basic education for all children?

What is ebilokan and his puppet successors doing with the trillions annual budget if they are not employing and paying civil servants well enough to provide these services and utilities that were taken care of by the colonial masters, the AG and UPN governments?
The whole blame is upon your kinsmen, Aguiyi Ironsi, who truncated regionalism out of bitter envy of Western Region's development. His draconian decree 34 started this mess.
No matter how, SW is still your saviour today. Up till tomorrow, your people still do community esusu to send your kinsmen to come and seek economic asylum in the SW.

Since the January 1966 failed coup hijacked by Ironsi, has Obasanjo not been military dictator for three years and later served as democratically elected president for eight years?

This means he is the longest ruler of Nigeria. Ebilokan has also served as president for over two years now.

Why have they failed to reverse the mess of ironsi? Do you know why?

Meanwhile, what magical witchcraft did you use to know that Ironsi is my kinsman?

edet19892015:
Unless you understand your role in society, you can never make any meaningful contribution.

According to the Greeks, they are three types of people on Earth,
1. The idiots,
2. The tribesmen, and
3. The citizens.

Studies show only 10% of Africans are citizens.
The remaining 90% are either tribesmen or idiots.

1. When the Greeks used the word "Idiot", they did not use it as a curse word.
Idiots are people who just don’t care.
If they sit for exams, they will cheat.
If they are in government they will steal.

An idiot does not care at all, if he eats bananas he throws the peels anywhere instead of putting them in a trash bin.

IDIOTS won't attend monthly neighborhood meetings. They won't pay security dues. They won't contribute to community development. Even when they see or know about something that will harm others in the community they won't report it. When they see/know/have something that will benefit their community they won't share.

In fact, Idiots don't care to register for or vote in an election, yet they complain the most. If they register to vote, IDIOTS will sell their votes for peanuts.

According to the Greeks, some societies have more idiots than tribesmen and citizens.

2. The next set of people are "Tribesmen", these are people that look at everything from the point of view of their tribe.

These are people that believe in you only if you are part of their tribe.
It can be terrible to have a tribesman as a leader, he will alienate the rest.

When the Greeks talk about tribes, it’s not just about ethnicity, they also consider religion, gang membership, group membership, party membership and even cult membership as a tribe.

A great percentage of Africans are tribesmen, because they view everything from the point of view of their tribes. They trust only their tribesmen

3. The last group are "Citizens".
These are people who like to do things the right way.
They will respect traffic light rules even if no one is watching them.

They drive within speed limits.
They respect the laws, and won’t cheat in exams.
In government, they won’t steal.
They are compassionate and give to others to promote their well-being.

Citizens often promote projects that benefit everyone.
The Greeks called this group "The Citizens".

Some countries have more citizens than tribesmen and idiots, others have so many idiots.

A tribesman can become a citizen through orientation.
And an idiot can become a citizen by training and constant enforcement of the law.

But things fall apart if you elect an idiot or tribesman to lead you if he has not been reformed.

Where do you belong? Are you an idiot, a tribesman or a citizen? Reflect on your life.
Reflect about your immediate community, city, state and nation.

It was the British government who differentiated between it both during Colonisation , before independence and after independence

You Probably don’t know that the British Governor Capt Glover and the Egbas of Abeokuta fought over Ebutte Meta which the Egba Army Controlled in addition to the entire Lagos Mainland
The Ijebu Army controlled everything North and East of Lekki and the Oyo Army of Alaafin controlled Badagry Area and all the
way to Porto Novo

That was how the British Colonial Government met things on Ground when they arrived in 1851

Ijebu Egba and Oyo had spent almost a Century fightIng over the Lagos Coast and it had ended in a 3 way Draw

The Egbas also took Iddo Island and Could have taken Lagos Island but decided it would cost them too many men to
Capture Lagos Island because of the Sea Warfare that would have been necessary

It in the End it was the Egba Christians who Brought the British into the Conflict as allies of the Egbas
that was when the British Bombarded Lagos and Replaced Oba Kosoko with Oba Akitoye as Oba of Lagos
Oba Akitoye’s mother was from Abeokuta and he had been living at Abeokuta after seeking refuge there

Local Governments that were former FCT (Km2)
Lagos Island-8.7
Eti-Osa-192
Apapa-27
Lagos Mainland-19
Total-246.7 Km2

Total Lagos state landmass-3577km2

246.7/3577*100=6.9 percent

About 7 percent of Lagos State Landmass was former FCT. Others were part of old Western Region
It was not up to 1%
No up to one third Lagos Island was FCT
and over 80% of Apapa belonged to the western region

That's your reality, others have different reality,I too grew up in LAGOS during the military era,I grew up in apapa and it was a beautiful place back then, granted Lagos suffered a period of deterioration especially in the 90s and was revived by fashola but that doesn't take away the prior development which the military had implemented, there's still mounting heaps of rubbish all over LAGOS, etc,by the way a lot of places in other states have also become modern and improved, its just modernity and growth,it's not peculiar to LAGOS, what makes Lagos peculiar is the prior foundation of being a former capital.

If you use Lagos Island alone it will actually be 0.24 % of Lagos State Land Mass

If you add Ebute Metta and Yaba that can Bring it up to 0.30 %

But the Problem is that those Lands were only Leased by the British Government after they ran out of Space on Lagos
Island and the Lease agreement has already expired without being renewed that means that anything outside of the
Lagos Island is Technically Western Region Territory
Even the Leasehold agreement that the British had with the Onikoyi has Also run out but we
still included it as part of the Lagos Island the Capital

Originally Lagos the Capital ended at Apongbon Bridge on Lagos Island

Lagos Island is 9.26 sq km while Lagos State is 3,577 Sq km
Mushin was part of western region to the west, fadeyi to the north East even apapa used to be part of the western region.

You fools like talking rubbish. What is the difference between Abuja and FCT?

If there's a surge in population in Mararaba, or even as far as Suleja, it is all because people are drawn to the capital city of Nigeria. If they can't afford to reside in the main city, they will reside in the suburbs and surrounding areas. Whatever economic and social benefits/consequences accrue to the FCT, trickles down to every corner of the greater Abuja and even neighboring states like Nasarawa and Niger State.

Same applied to Lagos!

So this disingenuous and vexatious attempt to differentiate Lagos the capital of Nigeria and Lagos the non-capital of Nigeria is quite stupid.
Calabar, akwa ibom, onne even Koko in delta all have deeper sea port than Lagos..... why didn't the colonialist choose those places.....it's simple,Lagos better situated and closer to Europe than the other places, also Lagos was already cosmopolitan before the British came and was far better suited for commerce than the other places and lastly the Yoruba people if Lagos are still by far the most accommodating people in Nigeria that's why you still find Lagos still thriving ahead of others.....Lagos is the only place that you come in and melt in almost immediately regardless of your tribe....even Abuja doesn't feel same.
