I've since removed the expectations of better writing and direction from Nollywood projects cos it seems even highly budgeted fare also fail in this aspect.

I don't even see it as an excuse anymore that the writing is poor cos of low funding for the writing department. Why? I see South Korean and even Japanese movies and shows with top tier unbeatable writing that even rivals Hollywood sometimes on shoestring budgets, but still deliver.
But I can't smell half that shït in Nollywood .

The absolute best Nollywood flicks are mostly MID at best compared to competing industries.
I don't even think Nollywood can beat the best projects from Iran sef. 🌚
well, you cant exactly pull the writers out of the ether

for decades all nollywood required for the lightest of whiff of a screenplay, perfectly tailored for an audience whom wanted occult and the simplest of story lines. if you had entered the industry with a high concept complex story, you would have gotten nowhere. more likely the producers would say this is what i want and a barebones story was thrown around it

matters are made worse the the death of local nigerian soap operas. and nigerian literature in general.

what can you say about wura? saw it teh other day was about to download
Lol, I'm the wrong person you'd ask opinion of for Nollywood projects. I see them, and know about many of them but I rarely watch them.
It's when I visit my werey friend that's when I watch Nollywood fare cos that one too like the industry.

I don't like giving my opinion on what I feel about naija fare most times, cos it seems condescending.

I see ads for the Wura and I think I've seen a couple episodes when my guy was watching it a while back, but I didn't pay attention to it cos I wasn't interested at all.
Most of this naija fare sef, if I join person dey look am (while pressing my phone) na because I wan see yansh and brezz and who be the latest female celeb. Nothing more. grin

If not for my padi, on my own you no fit see me willingly carry hand say na naija project I wan watch. Few ones I downloaded some years back still dey my laptop UNWATCHED.

Even here in Nigeria. Soomany independent up and comers on YouTube.
I don't know about Ghana but south Africa for sure have far better written movies.
If so then there must be some sort of high level marketing from the Nollywood team to make our movies & shows be the flag bearer of African entertainment

I saw a southie series last month, Shaka something, it was clean and maybe writing was okay but wasn't hooked on it after the whole boobs flying everywhere... it doesn't have that flavor abi flare that Nollywood posses to make Netflix, Prime Video etc still invest in the African market

I myself came across the hype on this show on X and decided to see it without expecting some top notch writing or acting but at least something to keep me entertained and cure the curiosity of the massive hype on social media

Same happened when, Far from home abi something like that came out, King of boys etc

This thing no dey move me again.
Cos now many high profile naija movies now get good budget. The producers are now more receptive of something "different" compared to yesteryears, the budget and risk is now more elastic.

I know how many movies from last year till now that I've counted that have made at least #100-150mn naira at the Nigerian box office.
But all of them na still shite.

I just see Nigerians come online and shout and hype shit up.
You'd look at the reviews and shake your head. Nothing constructive or even a semblance of technicality to classifying something good.

At times I begin to wonder whether we that watch movies and review movies on this thread and the movies thread— whether we're the minorities — or belong to the nerd group.

Cos an average naija person haven't watched many of the movies that gets reviewed on the movies thread.

So I don't give my opinion about them in a public space or when discussing Nollywood amongst acquaintance and friends. Cos I feel my media literacy is light years apart from them, when all they've known is shite, any new glitzy flick is going to feel like the next best thing.

Almost all these guys don't even know who Chris Nolan, David Fincher, Martin Scorcese, Mike Flanagan, Steven Spielberg, or even Quentin Tarantino are.
Even the actors, they can never know who oscar winners or nominees like Joaquin Phoenix, Viola Davis, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya or Lupita N'yongo are just by hearing the name.

So how I wan take take such people seriously.

Nigerian hype on twitter for these movies don't move me one bit.
I might be curious enough to even download a few but to watch am na problem.

The only naija flicks of recent that I can say actually matches the hype are KING OF BOYS and ANIKULAPO. Even at that, I never watched them during the time they were hyped to the high heavens.

Nollywood na just hype, vibes and insha'Allah.

Me I like that Shaka Ilembe show oo. Pristine boobs everywhere. grin grin
The story kinda captivated me tho. I liked the show and would love to watch more. But I can't seem to nail the showtimes on DStv. I enjoyed the few episodes I watched.
Surely it doesn't have that flair and hype like Nollywood fare always have.

I just feel naija product are far well marketable and marketed than the rest of the continent.

Let's not forget, Nigeria is looked upon everywhere even amongst Africans as the capital of entertainment from these shores. Our music and movies are viewed as the pinnacle of African art. So even if we pour spit for ground people go still rush am.
Our stars and celebs are globally recognised and we've built our reputation and recognition over years of hardwork in the African continent.

There was a time the likes of Sam Loco, Osuofia, Aki and Paw Paw, Jim Iyke, Clem Ohaneze, Pete Edochie, Patience Ozonkwo, Genevieve, Rita Dominic, Stella Damascus, etc all ruled the African continent.
Their legacy ain't gonna be forgotten any time soon.

We've just used this background and engineered top tier marketing to promote our industry as the crème de la crème of the continent. So we're very marketable. Also, afrobeats going global now is another plus to market our entertainment prowess. Free PR and adding to our pedigree.

Every African country makes jest of us when they come across that saying "The Giant of Africa" these days. I know our leaders have been shitty and make the country backward compared to peers, but what everyone can't deny is that Nigeria is truly the Giant of Africa when it comes to entertainment. No one comes close.

That's why I feel the likes of Netflix will still keep investing in Nollywood even if they don't see the big benefits they were expecting. We're that marketable.

I watched a few episodes of South African show, Shaka Ilembe abi wetin dem dey call am on DStv. It is the highest budgeted Southie show and I could see the pristine cinematography, the play on geography and environment & scenery.....also the writing was top top notch. I was intrigued by the show and storyline. Even the acting was on point. And the Zulu language was paramount.

I look that show, mentally compare am with our bi budget shows or movies and I dey shake my head.

Jesus, that show dey show pristine South African boobs on raw display my gee. Plenty babes walking bare-chest just as our ancestors truly wanted. 🌚

My bro, I dey wonder when Nollywood wan dey consistent with the times and top tier like that.
Southie actors are waaaayyyy ahead of our own hypocritical actors Abeg.
There was one Southie action flick I watched before too but I've forgotten the name, it was top notch, storywise and even the fight choreography was dope and high quality.

° Brodaman, Plz don't ever compare southie to nollyhood, they are way far better and ahead of us. Their story, their script, cinematography, sound score, editing, plz abeg abeg. I haven't watched a worthy naija movie this year and I have watched like 3 quality from the south. Last year even had better quality than those released this year though I haven't watched the lasted hype hopefully today sha.
Even in television station, we ain't anywhere near them. Our top TV station cinematography is worse, if not for arise and maybe TVC and yes AIT, that channels I don't know the camera they are using, they are doing competition with NTA. I watched the live broadcast of Mandela's burial and see the quality of broadcast in every sense.
Aunty kemi movies are more of quality cast and cinematography, the script are usually vibes and insha'Allah

The way information spread in The Sandman is the only weakness I see in the show. It's normal for the endless siblings to know about Morpheus fate but how did the news get to Constantine so fast?

Sandman S2 8.9/10
It’s really good and I’ll definitely add it to my favorites series for this year.

A Little Spoiler

Killing his child is one of the hardest and best decisions he made in this season and that’s what killed him not sister of faith and the episode 10 was my favorite………..I’ll miss Dream and my favorite girl who always say “Doggy“
I am guessing you don't know that there is an episode 12 coming out tomorrow.

Yeah, I suspected so, given by the likes of Sundance Festival critics hyping it up.

We talked about the movie and its hopes of landing an oscar nomination back then in the movies thread, I think early last year or late 2023? 🤔🤔

Constantine is not a normal human being also she will definitely hear it from another gods/demon or other ways because the endless is like a celebrity to them

Even in human affairs, celebrity bad news spread quickly across the world
