July 29th: Bloodiest Coup In Nigerian History by gidgiddy(op):
Coup Date: July 29th 1966

Coup leader: Lt Col Murtala Mohammed

Participants: Major TY Danjuma, Captain Gibson Jalo, Lt Muhammadu Buhari, Lt Ibrahim Babangida, Lt Sani Abacha, Lt Jerry Useni, Lt Shehu Musa Yaradua etc

Casualties- Three hundred dead

On the 29th of July 1966, a military coup occured in Nigeria, carried out by mainly officers from the North West. Although the coup had little or no effect in the Eastern and Midwest Region's, it had devastating effect in the Northern and Western Region's. The military head of State, General Ironsi, and the Military Governor of the Western Region, Lt Col Fajuyi, were both killed. The coup claimed the lives of about 300 officers, mainly from the Eastern Region. The coup also greenlighted a pogrom where an estimated 30,000 men, women and children, mainly ethnic Igbos, were massacred in broad daylight, particularly in the North

Historians say the coup was for two main reasons:

Revenge for an earlier coup that occured on January 15th, and secession of Northern Nigeria from Nigeria. Indeed the coup leader, Murtala Mohammed and his henchmen, were in Lagos arranging for large plane that would fly all of them and their families to Kaduna where they planned to declare Northern Nigeria a seperate country. It was only after they held a meeting with the British officials who impressed it on them that the economy of Nigeria was in the South, and that the North would be worse off if they seceded, did they call of the idea of secession

They then chose the highest ranking Northerner at the time, Lt Col Yakubu Gowon, to be military head of State.

Despite this coup being the bloodiest coup in Nigeria, probably Africa, the coupist all went on to become influential men who would control Nigeria for many years to come.

Murtala Mohammed became Minister of communication, and would go on to become Military head of state. He was also killed in a military coup and has Airports and Highways named after him. He was even put on the N20 note

TY Danjuma and Gibson Jalo later rose to become Chief of Army Staff, both men retired as very wealthy influential men

Buhari, Babangida and Abacha would all go on to become Military Heads of State, with Buhari later transitioning to civilian President

Jerry Useni would become a 3 star General and FCT Minister, while Yaradua would later become chief of general staff, and become a very wealthy business man who built the Yaradua political dynasty. His younger brother, Umaru Yaradua , would become President of Nigeria

Nobody talks about this or ascribes a region to it the way they did to the first.

Some ,if not most of those soldiers are from the north central. They were all equally active in the civil war in the so called defense of the Nigeria.

The big and good question today now is,are they happy with the situation today as regards what's been happening in their region today?

A good example is the tales of lamentations from Theophilus Danjuma and Gowon whose people are soon at the brink of extinction in the hands of the very same people they do gave their lives for,the f.lanis

"NIGERIA RONU".
THE NIGERIA MILITARY ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN THE. EQUATION CALLED NIGERIA.
LET THE NASS, BY THE PROVISION OF THE 1999 CONSTITUTION, SCRAP THE EXCLUSIVE LIST OF DECREE 24 AND SIMPLY REPLACE IT WITH

1, FULL AUTONOMOUS POLICING SECURITY FOR EACH OF OUR 36 CURRENTLY EXISTING CONSTITUTIONAL STATES. EACH STATE MUST HAVE OWN SPC AND IGP RESPONSIBLE DIRECTLY TO STATE GOVERNOR.

2, FULL AUTONOMOUS RESOURCES SECURITY, OWN CENTRAL BANKING FUNDING AND SPENDING SYSTEMS RESPONSIBLE DIRECTLY TO THE STATE GOVERNMENTS AND

3, FULL AUTONOMOUS STATE ELECTIONEERING COMMISSIONS TO HANDLE ELECTIONS OF STATE, INDEGENES FOR ALL OF STATE RESPONSIBILITIES. THERE MUST BE SPSC-STATE POLICY SERVICE COMMISSION IN EACH STATE TO
PROPERLY HANDLE ALL OF THE ABOVE WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY. DANGEROUS DELAY MAY CAUSE IRREPARABLE DENIAL THAT MAY CHANGE THE NARRATIVE OF NIGERIAN SOCIAL ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL RESTRUCTURING TRANSFORMATION AND GAMBLE.

Meanwhile, the participants of this particular bloodbath and killings were never demonized but deemed national heros by the same band of hypocrites who see January 15 1966 coup as Igbo coup.

If gidgiddy and his people are given the chance to vote for either Tinubu or one of the coup participant in 2027, they will choose one of the coup participant over Tinubu.

Of course they won't be demonised, they are Northerners. Even the coup leader was put on the national currency, a privilege that countries only bestow on their best citizens worthy of emulation

Why you did not mention Obasanjo role in the coups?

Yeah, I'm sure when you Nigerians are asked about what the legacy of the person on your N20 note, you will proudly say he was a "revenge coup plotter"

Truly incredible that much of those who led Nigeria, Gowon, Obasanjo, Buhari, IBB, Abacha, Abubakar, Yaradua all got their greatness from 'revenge coup plotting'

The July 1966 coup is a northern coup and nobody is denying that fact.
But when we talk about the January 1966 people like the OP will want to change the narrative that is very glaring to even the blind.

The bloodiest is the January 1966 coup. A pregnant woman was even shot in the belly and killed with her unborn baby.

July 29th 1966 was not a coup, it was a mutiny, it only became a coup when Gowon was installed as Head of State.
