Lekki airport: Pay us before demolition, Ajah residents tell LASG

Property owners and tenants in the Ajiwe community of Ajah, Lagos State, have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state to halt the demolition of their houses for infrastructure projects until they receive due compensation.

They claimed that their property had been slated for demolition to make way for the Gas Link pipeline and Green Line Rail projects, integral components for the new Lagos Airport under development in the Ibeju Lekki area of the state.

The affected landlords and tenants, who staged a protest on Abraham Adesanya express road, weekend, displayed placards, some of which read: “We say no to Gas Link and Green Line Rail projects demolition of our properties without Compensation,” “Our properties cannot be demolished without Compensation,” “Compensate us,” among others.

Spokesman for the protesters, Kehinde Alakoso, said the projects served an overriding public purpose, as stipulated by law, but stressed the need to consider the human cost.

Alakoso said: “We have written to the state governor, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, and other relevant people in the state. Despite these communications and a meeting with the commissioner in April 2025 where compensation assurances were given, no concrete plans have materialized.”

Lamenting the impact of the project since work began in November last year, he stated: “Since pipeline laying started last November, they have blocked entrances to a lot of businesses. These businesses are crumbling and property owners and tenants are living in fear of the unknown and incursion onto their properties.”

Highlighting the legal basis for their demand, Alakoso stressed: “We acquired these properties legitimately and they have title documents.”

The law says you can publicly acquire people’s property, but you should make provision for compensation. They must put a human face to what they are doing; let us know how you want to compensate the people.”

Also, General Secretary of the Odugbese Ajereongbe Chieftaincy family and a representative of affected Ajiwe landlords, Ahmed Ajanaku, said that the government’s promise at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Swiss Hotel, Victoria Garden City, VGC was not kept.

Another affected tenant, Prince Olanshile Mogaji, representing occupants of Top Notch Plaza since 2004, pleaded for due process and respect.

Well, the government should act with human feelings. Some people have the properties as a source of livelihood.

Sometimes i find it difficult to understand how people that are fortunate to be in power think.
What stops them from compensating and or relocating the people affected by this projects before they begin construction. Sometimes it really makes me to wonder if it is as a result of wickedness, stupidity, ignorance or just plain indifference.
It really baffles and confuses me i swear.

The way we practice governance in Nigeria needs to be studied. For goodness sake must people protest before government will compensate them for the demolition of their properties?

When Yaradua was governor of Katsina State. A lot of people were praying that his projects should claim their properties particularly those in the rural area because he compensated them very generously.

It's like to be really in control as politician or in government official in Nigeria of today, u have to be ruthless; brutal; pitiless; destroy anything - building oo, property oo, enemies oo, perceived enemies oo. U must be ready to destroy them. Even people not from your ethnic group, u must be ready to deal with them otherwise your political associates or godfathers will tell u, u are not ready.

Anyway, God dey. U wey dey use power anyhow now, one day, d power go leave u weda u like it or not.

Pay them before you start the Project since you have accepted they owned the Properties and house. It is a very simple thing, pay them.

Once that is out if the way, you can face the Projects squarely without any encumbrance.

The Compensation money I believe should be part of the Projects amounts. Please don't delay pay them so that they can have the Financial means to relocate.

Why do our governors rush to build airports without addressing basic government services and utilities with adequate number of well paid civil servants?

Is that because we cluelessly applaud them for such misplaced priorities? Or what other reason huh

Lawmaker scores Lagos Water Corporation low

A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the state Water Corporation.

Fafunmi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said in Ikeja that the corporation had not been able to justify statutory allocations to it.

The lawmaker, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1 at the assembly, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the corporation had the capacity to generate much fund internally through water rates but had relied solely on government funding because of poor performance.

'' Anyone that is using water will be willing to pay for it; the corporation has not been giving us water.

"Is there any new community that Water Corporation has given water? People depend on boreholes; even government estates have industrial boreholes.

"Why do we keep pumping money into an agency that does not give us the desired results?'' he asked.

He noted that the Adiyan Waterworks was located at Ifako-Ijaiye, where many of the residents had resorted to digging boreholes as a means of getting water.

''A lot of people are falling sick because they don't drink clean water.

''In the same compound, where you have sewage, is where you have a borehole.

''There is no way you can manage the sewage that it will not leak and pollute the water; everyone drinking such is drinking contaminated water,'' he said.

The lawmaker urged the corporation to increase water reticulation and supply to residents.

With this current judiciary structure that is supposed to be the last hope of a common man...well i hope something good comes out of it...even if it does...there's this bad antecedents of not obeying court order so long as you're in power

Funny, everyone cheered when they came for Landmark. That's what happens when you think the aggression would be restricted to your neighbours only. A bully has no boundaries

If truly, Northerners fear Allah, Nigeria would have been far better than Saudi Arabia, U.A. E. If not the the whole of Nigeria at least the North would have been so different been so improved by standard of living and value for life, no insecurity challenges. Ask anybody who lived in Kastina, the same Yaradua was the worst governor in Nigeria in his first term. The people of Katsina suffered a lot until his second term when things started to change. His successor Shema, the same Northerner did projects but compensated the people far below average to a point that family members were ready to allow bulldozers to crush them on their sites.

Exactly ...

The money is always paid to one of their underlings whom even they themselves are sure will pilfer his cit and pass down whatever for those below him. Before it gets to those deserving of the compensation, it'll almost be nothing or it won't get to everyone.

Na one of the ways political godfathers use to settle their loyalists be this. Las las, na who no know somebody wey know somebody go suffer am.

But I assure you, the records will always show those involved have been compensated.

The heart of man is desperately wicked. Know that and know peace. However, that not only applies to those in power, even many ordinary people are wicked. Let the table turn and they will behave exactly like their oppressors.

Maybe something is wrong with me .... but is this the way to go? ...protest? ...and appeal to the government? ...the Governor? ...waste of time. Their properties will be bulldozed out of the way ... and no compensation given. Has work stopped on the project because of the protests and wailing and appealing? ... I'm sure it hasn't. What happen to going to court to stop the confiscation of land until a compensation agreement is reached? As it is now ...they are begging for compensation. The government can declare "ok ... we will gather all the names and bank details of those who will be affected by August 7 ...and may thunder fire me if compensation is not paid by August 20." And by August 20.... The affected receive alert .... deposit of N20K... case closed.

That's simply the right thing to do. You have to compensate them for their impending loss
