Help, My Son Stammers by ConcernedDad(op): 8:40am On Jul 29, 2025
Good day nairalanders. Please how do I stop my four year old son from stammering. He doesn't do it when speaking with his fellow kids, but when talking to his mom or me especially. He is my first son and can't imagine how it will be for him when he grows and wants to express himself.

A quick background to my topic. I'm the only one that Stammers in my family. Both in maternal and paternal. None of my siblings or relatives Stammers. I learnt it from a childhood friend when growing up. I know how it has limited me from reaching my full potentials in life.

Now my son is about to start his own and I'm wondering if stammering is hereditary. Please how do I stop it now he is still young. Medical experts in the house, any medical remedy for it. Thanks for your contribution.

He seems he speaks out of fear to you guys,
Nonetheless pray about it
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by illicit(m):
Stammering is a communicable thing, not exactly hereditary....

He just emulates you, maybe you should let him stay with another family where nobody stutters for a while

This is what I think he is doing. He seems to be afraid when talking to me especially, and not that he is afraid of me. Because he even like staying with me more than his mom. Thanks for your contribution.

Alcohol to a kid? You are not serious.

Lol, you don't learn how to stammer from people; it is simply genetic.

Lol 🤣 don't mind me
The kid is just trying to adjust to your family communication style(how you speak to him and your wife)
Try reading long passage from newspapers or textbook passage to him and he should also read after you for at least 3 month this should help correct both of you guys speech and make most of your communications with him not be interrogative all the time

What does it mean? Does it stop someone from stammering?

Teach him to talk slowly.
He speaks fluently when conversing with his fellow kids, but if he wants to speak to me, especially when I'm inquiring something important from him.

Take him for speech therapy. Search for any speech therapist in your area. It will help him.

Perhaps, your appearance threatens him. Watch the way you speak to him, that might help.

I stammer too.
Encourage ur son that he can speak normally.
Then tell him to speak slowly and with time he will get over it.

Sometimes it trauma related

.he's afraid of you

The fact that he communicate fluently with his peer shows theres nothing wrong with the young lad

Show him more care and attention and make him free with you, play with him like a little child

You didn't learn it, who you think is your father may not be your real father.
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by omoredia: 12:17pm On Jul 29, 2025
Children tend to speak like the person they are talking to. Learn to allow ur child lead when speaking. Thats the solution
Re: Help, My Son Stammers by MaziObinnaokija: 12:19pm On Jul 29, 2025

Re: Help, My Son Stammers by RillJ(m): 12:24pm On Jul 29, 2025
He speaks good with his friends but stutters before the parents especially you the father.
He is traumatized and scared of you especially. The child may only speak with you when he cannot avoid it.

You need to build bond with him and make him feel free around you.
Work on developing friendship and trust with him.
Avoid hash words with him and around him.
Engage him from time to time on informal things- plays, cartoons e.t.c.

Generally, some students may stammer at first but it tends to reduce with which comes with better self-control etc
