The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger aircraft ever built. It weighs up to 575,000 kg at takeoff and uses four powerful engines—either Rolls‑Royce Trent 900s or Engine Alliance GP7200s. It usually carries about 525 people across three cabin classes, though it is certified to hold up to 853.

Because it is so large and heavy, the A380 climbs more slowly out of the airport than smaller jets. During the initial ascent to 5,000 ft, it cruises at around 190 knots and climbs at only 1,500 ft per minute. Once above this altitude it speeds up to about 320 knots and can climb at nearly 2,500 ft per minute before tapering off as it approaches its cruising altitude around FL350 to FL400.

By comparison, twin‑engine widebodies such as the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350 climb faster from the start thanks to lighter weight and greater thrust efficiency. Even the Boeing 747‑8 climbs more quickly in its early stages than the A380.

The A380 is classified as a “super heavy” jet and falls under Code F, meaning only airports equipped for its wingspan, runway width, taxiway strength, and gate layout can handle it. Around 150 airports worldwide meet those requirements.

Despite its size the A380 is actually pleasant to fly. Pilots say it responds smoothly to control inputs and offers excellent stability. Its modern cockpit adds familiarity for crews moving up from smaller Airbus jets.

Why The A380 Plane Often Climbs Slowly During Take Off Despite Its Massive Engin

Re: Why The A380 Plane Often Climbs Slowly During Take Off Despite Its Massive Engin by Racoon(op):
I have also observed this trend with many A380s, in particular an Emirates I once saw overhead and in many documentaries on TV.

It is understandable that the A380 is a wide-bodied aircraft & it's compartmentalization adds to the frame weight hence needing strong engine trust to generate lift.

You lot never fail to put down Africa whenever you have the opportunity.

Atlas Aircraft Corporation (South Africa), The Airplane Factory (South Africa), and Airplanes Africa (Tanzania) are African companies building airplanes.

The fact that you live a mediocre life doesn't mean other Africans are like you. That one is your immediate family problem.

You don't need l to ask we Nigerians this question ,how many of us in this forum have entered A380 before? Nigeria as a country don't even know how plane tyre is manufactured not to talk of the engine or landing gear

Body mass.
The Newton third law of motion acts less on it because of low momentum.

I once did a Lagos to Dubai on an A380. It was such a delight to be on that flight. It has stairs leading to the upper deck for the Business and First-class travelers. The in-flight experience was superb.

One word answer: Drag. The weight of the intercontinental aircraft means that it needs larger wingspan just to be able to create enough lift, greatly increasing the drag to lift ratio. The heavy engines on that thing is there just to overcome that drag which, annoyingly enough, requires even more wing surface to lift. Also, for such large wingspan, you really don't want to be putting too much lift force on those wings otherwise you risk tearing them off the fuselage.

Here's a fun fact. No airport in Nigeria is rated large enough for this plane to land in. The runway length this plane needs to take off in is simply crazy. The Nigerian airforce Tactical Air Command in Makurdi, which has the longest runway in West Africa, may be sufficient enough for the A-380 to take off and land in. This plane is a marvel to behold.

Any passenger airplane that climbs very fast? All climb slow. How they climb I believe is related to their weight.
