Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has claimed that Lagos State belongs to no tribe in particular. In an interview with News Central TV, Charly Boy backed the notion that “Lagos is a no man’s land”, likening the state to New York City. The veteran had initially expressed his displeasure in in renaming of the popular Charly Boy Bus-stop. He emphasised that his legacy is not tied to material things but embedded in the hearts of the people he walked with. “This is our first capital, so it has people from different ethnic groups who make Lagos really bubble. If you are looking at it from that perspective, yes it feels like America. The melting pot of lots of immigrant people and look at how Donald Trump is messing the whole thing up. Everything up. From that perspective, in terms of people coming together, it is really a no man’s land, it’s like New York. Before it became the capital some people owned it. Did it become a capital from its inception? Didnt people live there before the colonial masters came and made it capital? Was Calabar not a capital at some point? Why don't people flood there today? Has Abuja not been capital for almost 40 years now? Why are people not flooding there like Lagos? If he was talking on a personal level then I may agree with him. But who owns Lagos is not even up for debate. The only way you can take Lagos from Yoruba folks is to declare a war and take it by force. Any other thing is just idle talk. Calling Lagos a "no man's land " should be considered a hate-speech in Nigeria. Statement like this are meant to bait and annoy some people. Nobody asked for Lagos to be made capital. In fact, it is not everyone that like chaotic cities like Lagos. Lagos stopped being the capital of Nigeria 34 years ago. Yet, some people are still saying crap like Lagos is a no man's land. As far as I know, there is no habitable land in the world that does not have its own people. I genuinely believe in inclusivity where everyone in Lagos live peacefully regardless of their tribe or nationality, but calling the place a "no man's land" is annoying, disrespectful and ungrateful to the indigenous people.
