Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has directed significant personal donations toward social intervention projects across Nigeria, with the South East receiving the largest slice.

Fresh figures released by data firm Statisense show that between January and July 2025, Obi spent a total of N576 million supporting charitable and social initiatives nationwide.

South-East tops list of Obi's donation recipients
A breakdown of the donations by geopolitical zone reveals a clear focus on Obi’s native South East, which received ₦415 million, about 72% of the entire sum.

The North West and North Central followed distantly, each getting ₦60 million, while the South South received ₦35 million. The North East had the least allocation at ₦6 million.

Online commentators say the numbers reflect both Obi’s commitment to philanthropy and the reality of regional priorities shaped by his political and personal background.

Since the conclusion of the 2023 presidential election, Obi has kept a steady presence in public life largely through philanthropy, social engagement and issue-based commentary.

Though the donations span multiple sectors, including health, education and direct community support, the figures show that the South East, which overwhelmingly supported him during the election, remains the main beneficiary.

"If Obi becomes President, it's the Yoruba people who would suffer the most," a Nigerian commented on X (formerly Twitter).

Many Nigerians have dropped their takes on the list showing which of the Nigerian regions has benefited most from Obi's benevolent donations. Below are some of the reactions as seen on X;

Apart from 10 churches in one street another 10 on the other street what has your people donated to the people of south east?

The South West region is the most properous region in Nigeria. They don't need his donations. At least that's what I have learnt from Nairaland.

If it were to be from another person, they will start asking , where the money come from , but na obi now, he carry money from heaven. They deliberately left out last year so as to avoid including the 50m donation to Dominican University in Ibadan.

Same people that were complaining last year that he's showing love to other States he should go and donate to SE, that charity should begin at home.

Today they are crying that a man choose to give more of his personal money to his people.

How can you take away Lagos which contains the highest population of Yoruba?. However SW minus Lagos still has a big economy bigger than most. Then after Lagos in.this country it is Oyo state economically. Check everything like VAT, number of hotels and etc.

I dont even know how some people think such donation is a sign of leadership. The donations is one of my reasons for disliking PO style since 2007 (Awka days).

Don't be petty or making sensational posts just to undermine Peter Obi. He is using his private funds for charity, his money ; his discretion. You don't know his next stop or his next move. DONATION IS NEITHER GOVERNMENT NOR GOOD POLITICS. IT IS PHILANTHROPY.

As a private person tinubu donated a lot of millions to the north on weekly or monthly bases not to his region sw or even south East, it's his personal money you have no jurisdiction over that

Even obi have donated to university in ibandan a sum of 50m
