Good day nairalanders. Please how do I stop my four year old son from stammering. He doesn't do it when speaking with his fellow kids, but when talking to his mom or me especially. He is my first son and can't imagine how it will be for him when he grows and wants to express himself.

A quick background to my topic. I'm the only one that Stammers in my family. Both in maternal and paternal. None of my siblings or relatives Stammers. I learnt it from a childhood friend when growing up. I know how it has limited me from reaching my full potentials in life.

Now my son is about to start his own and I'm wondering if stammering is hereditary. Please how do I stop it now he is still young. Medical experts in the house, any medical remedy for it. Thanks for your contribution.
Greetings Boss. Just help him overcome it. There are proven ways of doing this if he isn't doing it out of fear as you mentioned.
Here's how and this is for you too; learn to hold your breath when you speak. One sentence at a time over time and gradually it would stop or go away on it's own.
Number 2 you guys should take to singing. By singing I mean songs that stretch your vocals not all this crappy Nigerian songs o(well there're Nigerians songs that fall into the stretching of the vocals category) so use those two. Doing this two things cures your stuttering or stammering. Finally pray. Ciao. Tell me how it panned out eventually.

I've been considering sending him to a relative but he is still young to stay with another person that is not his parents. Not that I Stammers all the time.
Hold his hands and ask him to hold his breath while talking.

The best way to stoo stammering is to hold down your breath while speaking.....practicing that for a while will eventually stop it.

When I was a child, I used to starmmer.
Let him think and recite what ever he wants to say in his mind b4 speaking it out. And you need to exercise patience with him.

First off, it’s not unusual for kids around 3 to 5 years old to go through phases of stammering, especially when they're excited, nervous, or trying to express more than they can clearly say. The fact that he doesn’t stammer with other kids might suggest it’s more about pressure or emotions than a permanent speech issue.

It’s possible that he feels more nervous or eager to impress when speaking with you or his mom, especially if he senses high expectations.
Try to keep conversations with him calm and slow paced give him time to finish his thoughts without jumping in or correcting him mid-sentence. Also, avoid showing any visible worry when he stammers, because kids can pick up on that energy fast.

As for heredity, stammering can run in families, but environment and emotional dynamics also play a huge role.

The good news is that early intervention works. I’d recommend seeing a speech therapist many specialize in childhood speech patterns and can help guide both your son and the family in the right direction.

With patience, support, and maybe a little professional help, your son can grow out of it and gain strong communication skills.
You're doing the right thing by acting early. 💯
Awesome. Thanks dear. I'll give it a try.

Perhaps he is trying to imitate you since he speak normally with friends.
Children tend to imitate their parents, so try as much as you can not to stammer in his present or tell him you are sick that's why you are stammering and he shouldn't imitate you.
Secondly mingle with him so that he will feel free with you.

It's understandable to be concerned about your son's stammering, especially considering your own experience with it. Stammering can sometimes be hereditary, but it's not always the case. The fact that your son only stammers when speaking to you or his mom might suggest some emotional or social triggers. It might be helpful to create a calm and pressure-free environment when speaking with him, and avoid interrupting or rushing him. Speech therapy is often recommended for children experiencing stammering, so consulting with a speech therapist could be a good step. They'll provide tailored exercises and techniques that can help your son.
