The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”

I can tell you for free than Benin and Cameroon have more stable economies than Nigeria. In Nigeria you cannot predict anything beyond a few months. Policies change and reversed overnight without warnings. Our exchange rate moves like a leaf blowing about in a rain storm. Price of petrol and energy is as predictable as a mental patient. You cannot do any long term planning in Nigeria.

That's not possible. Most African leaders especially the elected ones are tied to western countries and their interests. Most have double citizenship, their families live in these countries, and they hide Most of their stolen assets there.

The countries on the list have either had currency devaluations or civil wars, so the list is somewhat accurate. Turkey, Lebanon, Argentina, Nigeria, Egypt, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe have experienced currency issues in the last 20 years.

The main problem with Nigeria is Nigerians. We are too sentimental to diagnose issues; everything is viewed through an emotional lens.

Resource (Oil) rich countries need to save money from the revenue they get from the sales of their resources. Global prices of resources are never stable, so the savings are meant to even out the government's revenue. When revenues are high, savings should be increased, and government spending should remain relatively constant. When revenues are low, savings should be depleted, and government spending should remain relatively constant. During the good times, the government should reduce debt, and during the bad times, debt should rise at a steady rate while devaluing the currency gradually to minimise pressure on imports.

GEJ wasted all the money Obasanjo and Yar'Adua saved. Buhari met an empty purse. Buhari borrowed money and gradually devalued the Naira. Tinubu crashed the Naira, pushing Nigerians into poverty. Crashing the Naira gave the government extra dollars and reduced the pressure on imports. Rather than saving the excess dollars, Tinubu increased the security vote and constituency allowances of public servants, increasing inequality and also pressuring the Naira.
