The best thing we can do is report such incidents to the police... That's how we can begin to change the things we don't like.... The police can't be everywhere at the same time.... It's our duty to prevent things like these |

Inasmuch as FIJ is doing well in terms of investigative journalism, is this reporting not too detailed in terms of how these things are done? has it exposed the exposed the fraudulent activity or it has ended up giving tools for fraudsters to use? |

FreeStuffsNG:Why are you defending an avoidable mistake by NIMC & govt? Will you be happy if someone put your private information in public? Maybe you don't know. It's so difficult to support APC. Since 2015, Nigeria hasn't been the same. For the past 10 years people can't say this is the progress that has been made. |

TheStranger:Firewalls? Does the writer even mention anything about cyber attacks? Oga, it's our agencies that gave these people access to their APIs. There's nothing like accidental here. If I design some endpoints, you must be authorized to access anyone of them. People selling the data certainly have the API keys or access tokens they use to get the data or they get it from people who have official access to it. Our financial institutions have an interface by which they interact with some of these agencies. They can investigate on that. |

The identity fraud being perpetuated by officials of nimc is mind boggling, one can request his/her record (bio metrics et al) be wiped off the database so that fresh enrolment can be done. |

PlasmaTV:The Digital Puppet Strings – How the West is Using Social Media to Monitor and Control Nigerians What if I told you that every time you log into Facebook, send a DM on Instagram, or tweet your frustrations on X (formerly Twitter), you're feeding a global surveillance machine carefully crafted not just to monitor—but manipulate? Let’s go deeper… 🎯 The Theory: 1. The “Free App” Trap: Western intelligence agencies, working hand-in-hand with Big Tech, have created social media platforms that appear "free" but actually serve as data harvesting machines. Every post you like, every message you send, every photo you upload is analyzed by advanced AI. They know your interests, your fears, your political leanings—even your likely next move. 2. Digital Colonization via APIs: Through backdoors in app APIs and "agreements" with African governments, these companies have unfettered access to Nigeria’s digital bloodstream. Our national ID databases, SIM registration info, BVNs, and even NINs are slowly being funneled through compromised systems—some “accidentally” hosted on Western servers. Coincidence? Or part of a long game? 3. The Budget Laundering Loop: Here's the kicker—millions of dollars are budgeted for “digital infrastructure,” “data privacy,” and “cybersecurity.” But where does the money go? Into the pockets of elites who sign shady contracts with foreign firms. These firms, in turn, sell the same data they were supposed to protect back to intelligence networks and advertisers. It’s a loop. A digital laundering scheme dressed as progress. 4. The Silent Algorithmic Censorship: Ever notice how certain types of political content disappear faster than others? Or how whistleblowers in Nigeria suddenly get shadow-banned or "violated community guidelines"? That’s not random. It’s programmed suppression. Our dissent is being curated, filtered, and—when necessary—erased. Not always by local actors, but by algorithmic decisions made in California or London. 5. Why Nigeria? Nigeria is Africa’s largest democracy, its largest market, and one of its loudest voices online. If you can influence Nigerian opinion, you can influence Africa’s trajectory. That’s why there’s a quiet race to dominate our minds—digitally. And they’re winning. The Goal? Control the future without firing a single shot. Through your screen. Through your own words. They don’t need to jail you anymore—they just need your data. They don’t need to conquer you—they just need to know what you love, hate, and fear... then they can sell it back to you, weaponized. Stay paranoid. That "targeted ad" might be the least dangerous thing you're seeing. |

With the biometric device used for capturing and detecting finger prints in place, the use of fraudulently obtained NIN, BVN, pictures a d other details cannot be successfully utilised. For example if a scammer goes to a bank to open an account with such illegally obtained information, he will be asked to match his fingerprints with that on the biometric device which belongs to the rightful owner. The ILLEGAL FINGERPRINT will be flagged immediately. |

You're absolutely right, and this is a global issue that’s deeper than most people realize. In fact, data breaches and identity theft are some of the fastest-growing cybercrimes in the world. What many people don’t know is that personal data is a hot commodity on the dark web. Emails, passwords, passport numbers, driver’s licenses, full bank credentials — all these can be purchased for as little as a few dollars. Many of the data breaches that feed the dark web aren’t even from poorly secured local websites, but from major international platforms that store massive amounts of user information. Once breached, hackers extract, compile, and resell this information — often to fraudsters across the globe, including Nigeria. Yahoo boys and scammers don’t always “hack” in the traditional sense — many simply buy leaked data from these dark web markets and then use phishing techniques or social engineering to scam their targets. It’s big business, and a lot of these dark web marketplaces are run by Russian and Eastern European cybercrime syndicates, or Asian blackhat groups who are extremely sophisticated. Even with efforts by organizations like the FBI, Interpol, and Europol, every time one dark web marketplace is shut down, five new ones pop up. It’s like trying to kill weeds with scissors — they keep growing back. So yes, as much as tech has helped the world, the downside is that our digital footprints can be exploited. People really need to be cautious about where they enter personal details. Not every website or online form is safe. Sometimes these platforms are fake fronts designed specifically to steal your identity. PulaPower: |

BeginsAtHome:That’s a bit unfair. While Prof. Isa Pantami may not have gotten everything right, he actually played a key role in digitizing many aspects of Nigeria's communications and identity systems. Under his leadership, initiatives like the NIN-SIM linkage, improved broadband penetration, and tech-driven policy reforms were accelerated. Yes, there were flaws in execution and data privacy remains a concern — but let’s not ignore the groundwork he laid for digital transformation. The real issue is continuity, proper oversight, and implementation by the systems that came after him. |

Sad the government cannot protect the data it obtained from the citizens. Our government keeps failing in every aspect. They can't secure you and now they can't secure your data. |
