Great development. About time African nations increase trading with one another rather than constantly running to the West as trading partners.

Lol. "Innocent cows"? Are they heading to jail or hell? You know better than the qualified veterinarians who will be looking after them? You know, even as a Nigerian, I find Nigerians an amusing people.

Una over-sabi mentality that pushes you to rush and talk senselessly is truly universally unique. No restraint at all.

These cows are being imported because they are believed to have better milk production than ours
In human beings does milk production correlate with breast size?

I agree we should look at India but not because they don't eat cows
Some actually do but most don't

Anyway whether they eat cows or not how is that relevant?
What does that have to do with anything? That they will dash you cows because they don't eat them?
Indians keep cows mainly for milk so their cows are useful to them
India has the most cows in the world because they are useful to them

However India is a big country with 172 million Muslims who do eat beef
They have about 30 million Christians and some Hindus eat beef

Try and research stuff before you talk

This is the reason for the establishment of a separate ministry of livestock.

Guess what, I have some friends from some African countries and Europe who are working in Nigeria as expatriates. Anytime, we order food food, I notice that they don't order for beef. I became curious to know the reason why. These friends or have never eaten our beef in Nigeria. When I asked them the reason why, they said the cows they see in Nigeria can only be seen in their vertinaries. That our cows look so sick to care to have a taste of one.

It was food for thought for me. How can our cows look well nourished when they are left to roam about, from Sokoto to Lagos inside of the Ranch system more so Nigeria doesn't rank any where when it comes to countries exporting cattles so why all the killings in the name of Fulani Heardsmen because of cows that are mostly sick.

WizardOfNG:
You raise some good points. In fact it is the issue of competitive advantage that saw the South cede livestock agriculture and animal husbandry, related to Cattle etal, to the North wholly.

That now has to stop because there is nothing the North is not using mlalevolently today to blackmail the South over political power.

It is however not right to ignore livestock from the North and import. That is an act of agressjon no President, however well-meaning, will look good enacting.

What would be a good solution would be for the South to engage in livestock and crop agriculture to secure food sufficiency.

That would be a development the North would not be able to criticise publicly because it remains the prerogative of the South to engage in commercial livestock and food crop agriculture to feed the people in the region since the North wishes to use her monopoly of those malevolenty.

What is shown below is from 2021 and I am personally exasperated it takes Southern Leaders so long, after the North has openly put them on notice, to act and secure solutions against food war they know the North will always deploy against the South as the main tool of blackmail she has..

Everything always takes ages because of the lack of focua and application of Nigerian leaders.

https://www.icirnigeria.org/food-insecurity-blockade-by-north-forces-south-to-rethink-agriculture/
I love these submissions!
@the bolded however, if Buhari's administration can aid the sabotage of food security of the South by closing Southern Borders, I see no reason why southern President should continue to encourage such mindless Monopoly which has proven to be costly to the lives, livelihood and peace of Southerners.

You will come to know how much heartless the Agenda is when you realize that apart from the ubitiquous Fulani cattle, the buck of these livestock and foodstuffs are being imported from Niger republic! Why deny foodstuffs importation s from Benin republic and Cameroon while allowing same from Niger Republic?!

The Transportation cost and Security risks incurred on foodstuffs from Niger to South can never stand any comparative cost advantage against those imported from Benin/Camerroon. Never!

Kenya’s Uasin Gishu County has successfully exported 50 high-performing dairy cows to Lagos State, Nigeria, marking a new chapter in the international livestock trade in Africa.

The cows, flown out via a cargo plane from Eldoret International Airport, were selected from top-performing smallholder farms across Uasin Gishu, a region long recognised as the heartbeat of Kenya’s dairy sector.

Announcing the development in a Facebook post, Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim described the export as a “major milestone,” crediting ongoing county investments in livestock quality and farmer support.

“These cows, carefully selected from our smallholder farmers across the County of Champions, are a testament to the strength and potential of our local dairy sector,” said Chelilim in the terse statement posted to his official Facebook page.

While Nigeria is home to one of the largest livestock populations in Africa, the country continues to grapple with low milk yields and underdeveloped dairy genetics. The import of Kenyan dairy breeds, known for their superior milk production, is expected to enhance productivity in Nigeria’s dairy industry.

“This move reflects the results of our continued investment in livestock farming through the rehabilitation of cattle dips, subsidized artificial insemination programs, and enhanced extension services,” Chelilim added.

The export represents a win-win for both countries, Kenyan farmers gain access to a broader market and better incomes, while Nigeria benefits from improved dairy productivity and genetic diversity.

Agricultural experts viewed the deal as more than symbolic as it demonstrates the rising potential of intra-African trade in high-value agricultural commodities and the growing reputation of Kenyan dairy genetics.

“Step by step, we are transforming dairy farming into an income-generating enterprise and opening new markets for our farmers beyond our borders,” Governor Chelilim added.

The export came amid ongoing efforts by Kenya to position itself as a leader in agribusiness innovation and by African governments to deepen regional trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative.
