Former Super Falcons striker Patience Avre Odeli has accused previous Nigerian governments and Football Federation officials of robbing her generation that brought football glory to the country.

The one-time top scorer, who is presently based in the United States, said she and her colleagues who won the Women’s African Cup of Nations four times and featured in four FIFA Women’s World Cups were not appreciated.

Avre said this has left some of her teammates facing harsh economic challenges years after giving their best to the country.

The ex-striker of Ufuoma Babes FC of Warri and Princess Jegede Queens FC of Lagos, whose generation was the first Super Falcons team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, said the government failed to adequately compensate them.

“My generation was robbed several times by irresponsible government and NFF officials. The government approved peanuts as we campaigned in the African Women Championship, Olympic Games, and FIFA Women’s World Cup,” Avre said.

“Promises in the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo were worthless, whilst some NFF officials led by Amaju Pinnick and coaches sat on our little bonuses and kits. Amaju repeatedly asked some of us to send our account details without paying us till date.”


She accused officials and coaches of failing to protect the players’ interests, adding, “Besides inexplicably cutting our allowances, some officials and coaches would seize our jerseys and souvenirs we should have taken home after major competitions.”

However, Avre commended President Bola Tinubu for rewarding the current Super Falcons players and coaches who recently won WAFCON in Morocco with millions of naira, apartments, and national awards.

“I served Nigeria for thirteen years and we were never accorded the honour we deserve. Instead, we got empty promises, golden handshakes, golden cards, and N300,000. We were promised landed properties that we never received.”

The Delta-born former striker appealed to the President to correct the injustice done to her generation.

“Most of my colleagues are suffering. Hence, the President should correct the injustice,” she concluded.

If he actually understand about his fundamental roles is to see to the welfare of the poor then he’s a failure in many indices. 50k dols would have just be enough given many sectors that needed funding, old people’s pension that see to your election triumph and our soldiers that are giving their lives against bokoharams, IPOBs and co. The consequences of having wrong people in government is always brutal .

When Tinubu was dolling out cash before he became president, it was Lagos money that's what some people say.
