Lawyer to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has revealed on his Facebook handle that his client has instituted court action against social critic, Reno Omokri

Nnamdi Kanu is suing Reno Omokri for a claim he made last month on his X account that Kanu and IPOB were involved in the killing of security agents as well as another claim made by Omokri that IPOB are 'unknown gunmen' commiting crimes.

Nnamdi Kanu’s case is a reflection of deep-rooted issues in Nigeria that haven’t been meaningfully addressed since the end of the Biafran War. You have decades of political marginalization, underdevelopment in the southeast, ethnic tension, and a real sense among many Igbo people that they’re not truly part of the national project. Kanu tapped into that frustration and gave it a loud, unapologetic voice.

That said, his approach has been risky and polarizing. His rhetoric—especially when it got inflammatory or crossed into openly confrontational territory—made it easier for the Nigerian government to crack down hard. The government's response, especially the way he was re-arrested (essentially extradited without due process), has only escalated things. It’s turned him into a kind of symbol—either a hero or a dangerous agitator, depending on who you ask.

In truth, both the state and Kanu have handled things in ways that pushed dialogue off the table. IPOB’s labeling as a terrorist organization, despite being largely non-violent in practice, makes meaningful negotiation harder. But the government’s heavy-handedness isn’t solving the problem either. It’s only reinforcing the sense of injustice that fuels separatist thinking in the first place.

So, here’s the bottom line: Kanu isn’t perfect, and some of his tactics have hurt his cause, but he’s not the root problem. He’s a symptom of a broken system—one that still hasn’t figured out how to deal with ethnic diversity, fair governance, and historical wounds. Until Nigeria addresses those core issues, there will always be more Nnamdi Kanus.
