https://static.themoscowtimes.com/image/article_1360/8e/234sadkwe8283232.jpg 🇸🇾 Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani has said his country wants Russia “by our side”, marking the first formal visit to Moscow by an official of the new government in Damascus since Syria’s previous 🇷🇺 Russian-backed government was overthrown last year. “The current period is full of various challenges and threats, but it is also an opportunity to build a united and strong Syria. And, of course, we are interested in having Russia by our side on this path,” al-Shaibani told his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Thursday during his visit to Moscow, according to a Russian translation of his comments. “But, of course, there are a number of factors that determine and complicate these relations on the ground,” al-Shaibani said, adding that the relations should be based on “mutual respect”. Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a key Russian ally in the Middle East, fled to Moscow last year after being ousted in a lightning rebel offensive that ended five decades of the al-Assad family’s rule. After settling in Russia, al-Assad later claimed in a statement posted on Facebook that he wanted to stay in the country and continue fighting, but that the Russians had pulled him out of the country. Despite having been on opposite sides of the battle lines during the civil war – Russia took part in air attacks against the Syrian opposition and used its military might to prevent the regime’s collapse in the early years of the war – the new rulers in Damascus, headed by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, have taken a pragmatic approach to relations with Moscow. A Russian delegation visited Damascus in January, and the following month, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin had a call with al-Sharaa that the Kremlin described as “constructive and business-like”. Russian forces have remained at Russia’s bases on the Syrian coast, and Russia has reportedly sent oil shipments to Syria. Al Jazeera || Euro News

A certain nobody Botragelad swore that Russian troops were kicked out of Syria. Meanwhile Russian bases in Syria remained untouched and Russia was among the first country the new leaders met after the coup. Reality is oftentimes disappointing for Botragelad and his minions. |

The new world order and power is brewing. Everyone should brave up and pick a side. Very difficult for African leaders to pick a side. They'll be diplomatic as always. |

WriterNig:Don’t blame me when the Soviet Union/Russia got humiliated and booted out of Afghanistan like a bunch of jokers. And then Russia supposedly the ‘great power’, couldn’t even hold Syria. They couldn’t even protect their pet dictator Assad properly. Paper bear. 😋 |

Hamas and North Korea should borrow "sense" from this current Syrian government. It is pure nonsense to keep fanning the flame of war, when they should focus on building their economy and avoid "unnecessary" wars. Kudos to the Syrian government 😎 |

The way the Russians were giving safe passage by the rebels after the fall of Asaad showed that there were negotiations and concessions made, which has made this new found love to happen. The rebels never attacked the Russians when they indicated their willingness to abandon Asaad and peacefully left Syria. The new Syrian regime is looking for friends at all costs. The odds are stacked against them and I am happy the way they are going about it - they are not seeing people as enemy and has let by gone be by gone. Despite repeated provocation from Israel, they have not retaliated nor has the regime described Israel as an enemy. I think the regime wants peace and wants to live with neighbors, peacefully. Agreed, Syria has been degraded militarily and does not pose any threat to its neighbors, the newly "baptized" hard core Islamist rulers in Damascus are interested in forging new alliances for the sake of Syria, which is good. They have blacklisted their long time allies, Iran and Hezbollah, and are more focused on building relationship with the West and the gulf states. Their new president, in his desperate attempt to look liberal, has started wearing designers suites, instead of his military uniform and has trimmed his long beards to a modest height. His current appearance is at opposite to how he appeared during his rebellion against Asaad. He has taken a new toga of a reformist and a moderate and the world is waiting to see if he would live to expectations. He has largely maintained peace in Syria, except in pockets of areas, where Asaad is popular and the remnants of Asaad forces are still controlling the areas. He was warned to desist from using force to quell the remaining dissenting voices, which he adhered to, making him to look like someone desperately in search of lasting peace. |
