Rena could end today as an AfroBasket champion who's WNBA team is on a 7 game losing skid. Imagine they fire the coach, I think she is the hottest candidate right now. I might be over thinking here but what if the Chicago Sky are doing a Nigerian night to run the idea of Rena being the head coach by their fans? Yes i know that sounds ridiculous but who has a night for an assistant coach while the team sucks? Then for my question, is Elizabeth Williams Nigerian?

MSGAMBLE9:Yeah definitely. She has a chance to be a big star on tv. |

BascoVanVeli:I'm not sure the Chicago Sky front office have the luxury to employ a rookie coach again. They'll likely go for a coach more experienced, but if at all they decide on a rookie coach, Lisa Leslie in my opinion is front runner. Her work in the off-season to make Angel better, and her hall of fame pedigree puts her ahead. Rena will likely have to leave Chicago to one of these new franchise to get a short (I prefer that by the way so I can hate watch Chicago well. Lol) Yes Elizabeth Williams is Nigerian, if you followed this thread some during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics it was common knowledge. She was in the Nigerian training camp with Nneka and Chiney preparing for the Olympics. 3 of them appealed to FIBA to be allowed to play for Nigeria. I'm pretty sure Chiney got a waiver but not sure why she decided against joining the team ultimately. My guess is she chose to instead have her Erica sister join the team in her stead. This means by implication that her bother Mark Williams, the 7 Ft center for the Phoenix Suns is Nigerian and can play for the D'tigers. This is someone I am hoping joins the team soon

MSGAMBLE9:No she hasn't, at least not officially. And her ESPN gig didn't start recently, she's been at ESPN for at least 10 years. She was always juggling both together. I do not expect she'll return to the basketball court though, but you never know. My point is her job at ESPN isn't proof that she's retired cause she always had the job and has been doing so for 10 years now. She hasn't formerly announced her retirement so let's wait and see. |

PDPGuy:If there's anyone who identifies with her root and very pro Nigeria, it's Nneka. I really do hope she gets the opportunity to wear the green and white at the next Olympics even if it's a mere symbolic gesture. |

Senegal frightened us last night. We meet another tough opponent today. Our D'tigress should be relentless in scoring today. All quarters must be won. |

lovewins:I hope so too. It’s a shame that FIBA’s nationality-switching process is largely subjective - it boils down to the judgement and decision of the General Secretary. I really do believe that the GS - being Greek - is afraid that if he approves Nneka’s switch of allegiance, the doors would be open for Naija to also persuade the Antetokoumbo brothers to play for D’Tigers. (Yes, I know Nneka’s case wasn’t helped by the fact that she had played in 2 world cups, donning the red, white and blue). Similarly, the French basketball authorities may also be fearful that Cameroon would likely persuade Joel Embiid to switch to Cameroon, if Nneka’s application is approved. These European countries obviously wouldn’t want to easily lose such talented players, so they’re gonna use every word in the FIBA statutes to at least frustrate the switch of allegiance process |

Irrespective of the outcome of today's game, one thing is certain, we need a squad revamp. We can't achieve much, particularly at the world stage with the current squad makeup. If there's any lesson we should learn from that Senegal game, this should be it. This becomes imperative seeing we have a large pool of potential players to work with both at the NCAA and pro level. |

lovewins:To achieve at the international level, we need to assemble the best of the best anywhere we can find them both locally and internationally. South Sudan is an emerging force too in the female category, we need to be aware. On their first attempt, see what they have been able to achieve. We need to convince all those who need to be convinced to switch allegiance to dorn the green white green. |

Embiid already played for the US in the last Olympics. He would have to apply to switch allegiance to Cameroon, then wait three years. That's the rule. That was also the reason Nneka Ogwumike could not play for us. I fully expect her to still play for Nigeria in 2028, if she is still playing at that time (she will be 38 years old in 2028). She might even be able to play for us next year at the World Championships next year, if we qualify (we would qualify directly by winning the Afrobasket today). Unfortunately, her sister Chiney has not played in the last couple of years because of persistent injury issues and is now more a TV presenter than a basketball player A Nigerian team with Nneka Ogwumike (LA Sparks), Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings), Kiki Iriafen (Washington Mystics), Elizabeth Olatayo Williams and Michaela Onyenwere (both Chicago Sky) as well as Anastasiia Olairi Kosu (Minnesota Lynx) would be an excellent team and even an outside bet for gold, both next year and at the 2028 Olympics. Note that Kosu, a relatively unknown name to most Nigerians, has already played in youth basketball for Russia, but the ongoing sanctions on Russia should make it less difficult to get her to play for us than Nneka Ogwumike's case. Luckily, she identifies with Nigeria and has looked up to Nneka Ogwumike since both met in Kursk about 10 years ago, when Kosu was about 10 years old. Nneka often played for Kosu's hometown club, Dinamo Kursk, during the WNBA off-season. |

lovewins:If we get a player like E Will I can see us on the podium at fiba. She brings a much needed size with elite rim protection. Hopefully she trys again just like Nneka. If it was about appeasing Angel Reese chicago would have kept T Spoon. I feel the assistant coaches stand the better chance. We are not talking about coaching the team next season. If the coach gets fired chicago will have to appoint an interim. That's what I'm talking about. Now if she does well she could then keep the job. Plus, hiring Rena will make it look like management had a plan the whole time (Which they didn't) |
