My Chinese cinema aficionados and animation heads on here, talk to me about this Ne Zha noise i have been hearing . I have had the part 1 in my drive for the longest time possible but never actually got around to see it, only for the part 2 to drop on VOD in the past few days and i am hearing from them Chinese boards and in general that this might be the best cinematic phenomenon in recent while, which i instantly call gimmick on 😩, but i say make i hear from una first, cuz i am this close 👌🏿, to indulge in this hype bait...

I really enjoyed the part one so I'm pretty sure this part 2 will be good and enjoyable too. If you like fantasy, magic and demons you'll enjoy it tbh.

Did you say it's out on VOD now?

The part one I watched was top tier animation. Great animation/CGI style. Good storytelling and great action.

I hear part 2 is far greater and bigger in scale and stakes. I'll watch soon enough.

Here's my take on the first one. 👇🏽

That period after "Endgame" (2019), when Kevin Fiege was greenliting every slop that came through his doors, did irreparable damage to the MCU, i mean filth like "She Hulk", "Secret Wars" and Antman: Qantumlovmbiaxx and The Marvels were their response to as a follow up to a hugely successive period, so people just got tired of shît, so it's no surprises that the wave for their slops, dwindles after opening weekend.

The next Avengers movie is the utmost litmus test for this franchise, even that is on shaking legs, i mean they got so spooked that they had to cast a beloved hero in the successful period, as a villain, just to got some sort of fan service going... doesn't bode well at all.
Some of you guys are quick to yarn dust as usual, is Deadpool 3, MoM, GotG Vol iii, Thor 4, Wakanda Forever and Spiderman FFH & NWH etc. that makes the bank not post Endgame? Even the so called "successful era" has it misses e.g. for every CA : The Winter Soldier there has always been Thor : The dark world ......Yes Marvel is having a difficult year but to call all post-Endgame flicks "Slobs" is simply Mouth-flapping and classic cherry-picking....

EXHUMA (2024)

Wonder why I delayed watching this film since I downloaded it November last year. I'm really glad I got round to it now.

In a bid to rid a family of a generational curse afflicting a newborn baby, a group of Shamans and Geomancers scrambles to banish the ancestral vengeful spirit, only to meet a far more sinister and vile démön stuck in WWII reality.

What started out as a family ghost story, evolves into a full scale historical supernatural tale, entrenched in South Korean political history and folklore.

Another flex from South Asians on just how top tier and unbeatable their horror storytelling are. I don't think Hollywood can craft a well written, all encompassing and delicately entertaining as well as personal and relatable horror story as good as the South Koreans or Japanese.

This is just cultural dexterity at its peak and borrowing from local ancestral folk tales and then interpreting it to cinema.

Why is this different from the usual Hollywood fare? Because the Asians are neck deep in superstition and very much believe these things DO happen and are deeply rooted in their societal fabric. So telling a story about your tribe's beliefs; stories passed down generations and way of life is quite superior and personal as well as feels authentic because you actually believe what's happening as compared to Hollywood where ghost stories are treated as a hoax or someone's delusional weak mind dreaming up something UNREAL.

These Asians are born, shaped and moulded by it; while Hollywood filmmakers just adopted the artform. There's no surprise who's going to come out tops. This is a culture and belief system with ages of history as opposed to someone's dreamed up fiction.

One thing I also noticed, South Koreans and the Japanese treat sound/music score as a true art form and holds high importance in their storytelling or filmmaking as opposed to Chinese films who treat the sound design as a secondary thought. It's so integral to the storytelling, it matches the tones and feels of individual scenes and sometimes you begin to wonder "why's this flick this good?" — and then it hits you— it's the music score that elevates and complements the film every part of the way.

It's a gritty tale, so gripping and ruthless you feel chills at some point in the story. The build up to the story is so well done and articulate you begin to wonder what frame of mind the writer was in while adapting this tale. It feels too personal to just be a "movie".
It is very relatable in the sense that this shares some superstitious beliefs as Africans and Nigerians. So this feels more authentic.

Choi Min Sik is one incredible actor (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) and man has been creeping up my Asian fare lately. Dude appears and just steals scenes. Kudos to the female lead Kim Go Eun, who gave in a worthy performance next to an elite veteran actor. She held her own just fine and was the heart of the film.

This isn't a film trying to burst your heart out with a competition for cramming in the most amount of jumpscares. This is the real deal. Creeping you out slowly as you weave through the story and start getting the full picture.
It's a cinematic masterpiece and one of the South Korean films I really did enjoy, and what makes it a plus for me is that it's as recent as 2024 as opposed to the masterpieces of old where they are usually a decade old or older. So, there's hope of seeing more of this supernatural splendor.

It reminds me of Na Hong-Jin's The Wailing with the incredible detail, slow burn, and the historical supernatural and racial lines between the Japanese and the Koreans.

It doesn't compare to how exquisite The Wailing was, but this is a worthy modern successor to such GOAThood. I deeply recommend, especially if you're a connoisseur of Asian cinema.

I rate this an easy.....8.9/10

I saw it last back to back with Oddity (2024), and i was in horror high for some days afterwards, just in awe, how beautifully done both flicks were... easily one of my best films from last year.

South Korean Cinema dey feed me steady whenever i call, make i no lie....They have come a long way from those "Boys over Flowers" (2009) days, as when i think of any media from there back then, i think of sappy, sugary rom coms, but they have evolved so spectacularly, horror? Political drama, Action? them full ground.

My brother, this people are GOATED for real.

I am personally apologising for classifying them as melodramatic and soapy romcom fanatics. I used to be irritated when someone told me they were watching Korean drama. grin grin

Their versatility is what amazes me. They're so darn good at it. If na horror and political drama, leave am for them. Their action is also top tier they've inspired even top Hollywood directors.
Cinematic excellence is their second name.

They've successfully taken over the baton passed to them by the Japanese. Since the Japanese has moved on from live action to solely focus on anime, the Koreans have adequately and masterfully filled the gap left.

ODDITY was easily my best horror film of last asides Robert Eggers NOSFERATU.

Saw this talk yesterday and was a bit irritated with the way ODDITY was excluded from this list especially when it's way better than films like LONGLEGS, TALK TO ME. Also excluding SMILE 2 is an annoyance.

SINNERS and NOPE whom I feel are a ll but overhyped in this list is also another vibe killer. Both are good films but I don't think they can lace the shoes of most of the films on that list.

Of course, not all post-Endgame MCU movies are trash.
But the truth is, the majority of them are.

Let’s go through the full list of MCU films released after Endgame and break down which ones were average or just plain underperformed.

Spider-Man: Far From Home
A billion-dollar movie riding the momentum of Endgame. Plus, it’s Spider-Man—Marvel’s biggest and best-selling character. No surprise it was a hit.

Black Widow
This movie flopped so badly, Scarlett Johansson sued Disney. Yes, it came out in 2021 (a COVID year), but it’s still a flop, forgettable and below average.

Shang-Chi
Good movie, sure. Still a flop.

Eternals
The first MCU movie to go rotten on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only did it flop, it damaged the franchise. You’ll never see the Eternals again, not even as a cameo.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
Massive fan service with all three Spider-Men. Obviously, it was a hit.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Released in 2022, this was the first time the MCU had back-to-back hits since Endgame.

Thor: Love and Thunder
Made money, but no one likes it. It underperformed, and Taika Waititi has been in director jail ever since.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Not as good as the first. Slightly underperformed but still a win overall.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
One of the worst comic book movies of all time. The damage this film did to the MCU will take years to fix.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn doesn’t miss. Solid movie.

The Marvels
The biggest box office bomb in MCU history. Cost over $220M and didn’t even make that back. A complete disaster.

Deadpool & Wolverine
Another multiverse cash grab built to pander to X-Men fans. Full of cameos and fan service—because that’s apparently the only way the MCU can make money now. No wonder they’re rushing to bring back Robert Downey Jr. for the next Avengers.

Captain America: Brave New World
Nothing to write home about. No redeeming qualities.

Thunderbolts
Not bad, not good. Just there. Another big flop.

Now let’s talk about the Disney+ shows:

WandaVision – Decent.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – Mid.

Loki – Decent.

Hawkeye – Mid.

Moon Knight – Mid.

Ms. Marvel – Mid.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law – Disgusting.

Secret Invasion – Makes She-Hulk look like prestige TV.

Echo – Did anyone even watch this?

You can defend the disastrous post-Endgame run all you want, but let’s not pretend Phase 1–3 was ever this messy.

Between 2008 and 2019, Marvel released 23 movies. Only two were genuinely bad: Thor: The Dark World and Captain Marvel.

Now compare that to the post-Endgame era.
Be serious.

You listed 4 or 5 movies as flop ( according to your GF metric) but listed about 7 or 8 as Hits then turnaround and called majority flop 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No one likes Thor 4 and Wakanda Forever which underperformed according to you yet they still make more money than your Fan-favorite disguised Justice League and The Batman 🤣🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣

Spiderman NWH is fan service, tell me where your fan servicing The Flash is 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I could actually give no flying toss about what filths that you mentioned up there make at the BO, i simply do not care, my own rift is with critical ratings which directly affects the BO returns in some way, which my post was about, so yes, i stand by what i said, most of the MCU releases, post Endgame (2019) have been dirt bags critically..

Now, I don't even know how old you are, but i just assume you are an adult, so you might want to leave all these secondary school boyish traits behind, bothering your head about how much a film makes, when it has no direct impact on you, just so you can score some kinda point in a fandom war you made up in your head, makes zero sense to me...in fact it sucks the joy out of even seeing movies imo, sef.

You probably do not know my history here, i might as well, have praised more MCU movies here than DC, because MCU had a hugely successful period, it's just so unfortunate that they are synonymous with gutter quality media these days, i hope they find their way some day, but for now, i am well within my rights to criticise every garbage they put out, in this their down bad era, and if DC also release a slob, then i will call it out too.

Because unlike you, i am not tie down to any fandom that has warped any sense of logic, i see everything, criticise when it is necessary and praise when it's necessary too...you should try it something, maybe you'd enjoy movies more and every of your post wouldn't be about defending a franchise that clearly doesn't even know you exist in the first place..

Shalom ✌🏿
