FRSC Introduces Community Service Penalty For Traffic Offenders by Editorialtimes(op): 11:49pm On Aug 04, 2025
By Andrew Haruna | The Bureau News

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a two-week ultimatum to fleet operators, transport union leaders, heavy-duty vehicle associations, and tricycle operators in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to comply with existing traffic regulations—or face intensified enforcement.

The warning came from FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, during a strategic meeting with major transport stakeholders in Abuja.

“We are adopting new strategies to address the excesses of motorists who flout traffic laws, especially across the six area councils,” Theman stated.

According to the sector commander, the FRSC in Abuja is collaborating with the judiciary to increase the number of magistrates and extend court sitting days to swiftly prosecute traffic offenders.

Community Service to Replace Fines

In a significant policy shift, Theman revealed that the Corps will prioritize community service penalties over conventional fines. This, he explained, follows internal research that shows that paying fines alone has failed to deter repeat offenders.

“Many motorists in the FCT treat traffic fines as a routine expense. That culture must end,” he told The Bureau News.

To support this change, the Corps is working in partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service and other security agencies to manage logistics and mobile court sessions. These courts will ensure judgments are enforced immediately.

Road Users Must Support Ongoing Reforms

Felix Theman appealed to motorists to support the government’s efforts to improve transportation, pointing out that billions have been invested in road rehabilitation and construction projects across the territory.

“The government is working to make roads safer and more efficient. We urge drivers to reciprocate by respecting traffic laws,” he said.

The FRSC Abuja Command will also continue its sensitization campaigns across worship centers, markets, and public institutions, to educate the public on the importance of road discipline.

Tackling Alcohol Sales in Motor Parks

The Sector Commander also touched on another rising concern—the sale of alcohol in motor parks. He confirmed that the Corps is in talks with relevant authorities to introduce measures that will restrict or eliminate the sale of alcoholic beverages in these areas.

“No one should be allowed to operate commercial vehicles under the influence. We must act now before more lives are lost,” he added.

Since they have no body-worn cameras, they behave with reckless abandon whenever there is gap to be bribed.

These people are just a lazy bunch, occupying government positions and doing nothing except collecting bribes at highways and major junctions.

Road witches, instead of focusing on the safety and maintenance of the road with NEMA, they are only after witch hunting the motorists.

What is government using vehicle registration, new plate number , drivers license revenue to do. FG did not fix any road, they place high tariffs on Tyre importation, spare parts, PMS etc.

This Nigeria democracy is a scam.
Re: FRSC Introduces Community Service Penalty For Traffic Offenders by Rindo69: 7:06am On Aug 05, 2025
What you need to reintroduce are special marshals who can fall down erring drivers on the road.

I remember those days when youd be driving rubbish and next thing, youd see a hand pop out of the window of the car in front wearing a blue arm band...then you know youve messed up. These days, special marshals just help with traffic control at very busy junctions..
Re: FRSC Introduces Community Service Penalty For Traffic Offenders by Quest7777: 7:08am On Aug 05, 2025
FRSC is almost useless.

A friend was apprehended by Road Safety for a small crack in his windscreen, but a Passat passed by, carrying a full cow with the horns projecting out of a totally broken windscreen.

I once traveled in a commercial Sienna with completely worn-out tyres that later burst at high speed almost resulting in a ghastly accident.
&yet we passed so many road safety along the way, who were only interested in harassing & extorting private car owners.

The FRSC, NSCDC, NAPTIP, etc are all evidences of the defects and decay in the Nigeria Police Force

You'll hold someone on the road for traffic offence and hurriedly sentenced him to a correctional facility/community services through a kangaroo justice system..... huh

Does that sound well to hearing?
Even a murderer will have time to defend himself and sue for fair hearing if necessary.

The truth is,
FRSC should just be a team of trained paramedics, emergency therapist, trauma psychologist, safety officers helping accident victims and providing trauma support/ succour to the victims on our roads.

They should be the first responder with right to evacuate accident scene.... They should have strong links with hospitals and insurance database to activate health insurance policies on behalf of a verified victim.

Sending people to prison, community services, running after traffic offenders and charlatan behaviours on the road should be left for LASTMA and LAWMA.
Re: FRSC Introduces Community Service Penalty For Traffic Offenders by Lezzlie(m): 7:54am On Aug 05, 2025
The FRSC needs to first address its own corruption , unprofessionalism and harassment of vehicle owners to start with .

First the arbitrary stop and search that has become routine for FRSC men is just a means for extortion , harassment and fleecing motorists.

You don't stop a vehicle for driver's license without a probable cause. It is criminal on the part of FRSC. You don't stop a vehicle just because you're FRSC on the highway without noticing anything.

Secondly their men in Benin Agbo road, Asaba Benin express are laying heavy planks on the express road to impede drivers who have commited no traffic offense just to get them to stop and start witch hunting them for papers and expired tyres or any fault they would be lucky to find or manufacture on the spot. This is road hazard by the same people who are tasked with the responsibility to keep the highway safe.

Thirdly FRSC is no position to determine form of punishment for erring drivers. That is left to the courts .

Fourthly the FRSC should, in collaboration with the ministry of transport, bring back road signs and directional pointers back to our highways like days back.

Fines are a good source of revenue, these institutions don't get it, all over the world fines are good ways to accumulate public revenue to help the institution sustain itself...the lazy mentality of our institutions should stop.

Address professional misconduct in your staff, give them proper orientation.

I see no reason why a staff of FRSC will be on the road after 5pm wearing mufty and collecting fines, that's extortion and it will be exposed.

saintjimos:

Nobody.
The campaign against drunk driving (and driving when high) can't be won by banning the sale of intoxicating substances in the motor parks alone.
The proliferation of joints, relaxation spots where hard substances are peddled openly, is more to blame. Furthermore, the widespread unemployment and poverty has come up with the situation where, as the wise people say, an idle mind is the devil's workshop. Social reengineering is needed, and fast!

Re: FRSC Introduces Community Service Penalty For Traffic Offenders by RSAV: 11:32am On Aug 05, 2025
A good development. FRSC fines are generally low and do not deter motorists unlike those of State Traffic Agencies like LASTMA. Introducing Community Service and publicizing same would go a long way in checking the behaviour of drivers. Fines should be sustained too while corruption amongst FRSC personnel addressed.
The pay and welfare of these Officers should be improved if we are serious about reducing extortion.

They are mainly good at deceiving themselves. How many commercial bus or vehicles owners or drivers have been penalized. How many considering the population they have. Even some road safety guy sef dey gbenu-soke
