Tinubu’s Harsh Economic Policies Have Wiped Out The Middle Class — Falana by Maxymilliano(op): 6:10am On Aug 05, 2025
Falana noted that despite the President recently acknowledging the economic hardship faced by citizens, his policies have further deepened poverty.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, stating that the administration’s “harsh neoliberal policies” have decimated Nigeria’s middle class and worsened living conditions for millions of citizens.

Falana noted that despite the President recently acknowledging the economic hardship faced by citizens, his policies have further deepened poverty.

I have seen the President ask APC governors to ‘wet the ground’ more, but as far as the masses of our people are concerned, things are getting tougher by the day because of the harsh economic crisis in the country, which the president recognise that Nigerians all over the country are complaining that things are getting tougher for them.

Because of the religious implementation of neoliberal policies by the government, poverty is on the ascendancy. That will require a review of these policies,” he said on Monday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria faulted the government’s privatisation drive, saying it contradicts efforts to tackle income inequality, adding that the government must reorder its priorities and provide targeted support for vulnerable Nigerians, especially those in rural areas.

You cannot be addressing income inequality in a country while handing over the nation’s resources to a few people in the name of privatisation.

Most Nigerians cannot afford three square meals a day. The middle class has been wiped out by the neoliberal policies of the government.

“The government must go back to the drawing board and review each of these policies, especially those pushed by the IMF and World Bank, in the interest of Nigerians. It is in the interest of the government to review its policies as soon as possible,” he stated.

Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has introduced sweeping economic reforms, including currency liberalisation and the removal of fuel subsidies.

While intended to stabilise Nigeria’s economy, the policies have triggered a high cost-of-living crisis, with inflation and poverty levels reaching alarming heights.

The removal of fuel subsidies, in particular, caused petrol prices to soar, triggering ripple effects across the economy, from rising transport fares to soaring food prices and general inflation.

Falana stressed the need for urgent implementation and legal backing of social welfare programmes to alleviate widespread suffering.

“To eradicate poverty, we must begin by implementing welfare laws,” he said, referring to the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), which was codified under the Social Investment Programme Agency Act in 2023.

The NSIP is a federal initiative designed to reduce poverty through schemes such as N-Power (for youth empowerment), the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), a school feeding initiative, and conditional cash transfers to vulnerable households.

“President Tinubu should be able to persuade the governors to codify social investment programmes and enact them into law,” he said.

Middle class now beg to survive in Nigeria – Chimamanda Adichie

Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has expressed concern over the economic situation in the country, saying many middle-class citizens who once lived modest but stable lives have now been pushed into begging for survival. Abuja

In an interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Adichie said the true measure of any political or economic success lies in how ordinary people are faring. She described the current reality as disturbing.

Life has become so hard in Nigeria, and me I can see it. For example, people who were formerly kind of securely middle class, not that life was rosy for them, but they got by are now people who beg and are in need. That worries me greatly,” she said.

She noted that the cost of living, particularly food prices, has soared to levels that make survival a daily struggle for millions. Nigeria travel packages

The level of suffering, how expensive food has become… I think the biggest political judgment one can make is about the lives of ordinary people,” she added.

The award-winning novelist said while discussions about the stock market and other economic indicators dominate headlines, what truly matters is the well-being of those earning minimum wage or struggling to survive.

People talk about the stock market. Personally, I don’t really care about those sorts of things. What I care about is that person earning minimum wage, how is that person getting on in this economy? It is the suffering that worries me the most. And it is terrible,” she said.

Adichie warned that extreme hardship can push people into making desperate and dangerous choices.

“It is not to excuse crime, but I think when life gets very hard, even people who before would not have considered certain things suddenly are willing to, and that is dangerous to society,” she said.

This seems to be the reality on ground, Nigeria is in dire need of leadership not politicking, because I don’t understand how people who are just one year in office instead of strategizing on how to secure their citizens and better their lives through favorable policies, instead they start strategizing for the next election/second tenure when you are not even half way to the one giving to you.

Is the Masses even ready for good governance? When tribe and religion, zoning and not zoning takes eminence over integrity, competence and capacity.

The other day, Chimamanda said almost the same thing and certain people were coming for her head, probably because she's from the SE. I wonder what they'll say about this. They think it's easy to defend a bad product.

Nah... Let's not muddle facts please.

The death of the entire Middle class was the classic doing of Muhammadu Buhari's clueless 8 years in office.

Tinubu's role in enabling that travesty of leadership can't be denied tho.

For a long time now, there's been no middle class in Nigeria as far as I can tell, many things have gone wrong with Nigerian before the current administration.

Tinubu is not fit to govern a complex country like Nigeria.
I mean, you cannot give what you don't have and Tinubu doesn't have good administrative capabilities. All he knows is snatch it & run, Agberoism and tribal politics.

Nigeria has never had it this bad even during the military dictatorship era of IBB & ABACHA.

TINUBU IS BAD MARKET. angry

Man is even talking about three square meals. Wouldn't that tantamount to overfeeding in today's Nigeria? You should even be talking about two square meals in a day. It's that bad. We can't afford it. An average adult now spends at least 60-70k monthly to stay alive in Nigeria, and it's not even as if it's easy to make the money. O Tinubu Nigeria! I weep for you cry

Tinubu implemented the wishes of the neo colonialist invaders, whose economies in their höme states are in total disarray.

What Tinubu did was not for the interest of Nigeria & her citizens but purely for the benefit of the neo colonialists & the already rich Nigerian elites like Dangote & others.

For years there have been pressure by thesame neo liberals from Europe & America on every Nigerian government to implement policies not favourable to the Nigerian people. Every Nigerian government had rejected that evil policies & rightly so until Tinubu came.

Tinubu's baggage is extremely bad. His history is fraudulent & the mandate was snatched. The neo liberal colonialist knew all these about Tinubu & they also knew that the man Tinubu will do everything to hold unto his snatch & grab mandate.

Tinubu is an extremely very greedy man, elitist in character & really do not care for Nigeria & her people except himself, his ego & his elitist mentality.

He quickly rushed to implement policies of those neo liberal colonialist in order to appease & appeal to them not exposing his fraudulent history & the most rigged election in the history of the country.

In a few years time, if these wicked policies is not reversed Nigeria will be like SA, where a lot of white neo liberals would move into Nigeria acquire all assets, all resources in conjuction with their Nigerian elites.

It has already started happening. Falana is absolutely correct & it will get worse if not changed.

Most of these neo liberals eurpeans & Americans will be in Lagos, based in Abuja & mostly in the South. With time, there will be an increase in men marrying men, women marrying women, & the final destruction of the Nigerian family cultures. Our boys & girls will be something else.

The highway from Lagos to Calabar, the City been built on the ocean in Lagos are all signs of what is to come. These things are not been constructed for the Benefiz of Nigerians but for their neo colonialist elites & the Nigerian elites.

Go to Europe or America, you will notice thesame wiping out of the middleclass & how frustrated most europeans are in their homecountry today.

If Tinubu is not removed, know that Nigeria will be like SA, Zimbabwe, Namibia where the assets are concentrated in the hands of the whites & their fellow elites in those country.

Tinubu must not be allowed to snatch & runaway in 2027

Research: In Europe there is what is known as subvention. This word is not different from what subsidy actually means. The EU heavily invest in subvention grants to farmers in Europe for thesame reason Nigeria paid subsidy on fuel. In America, farmers are heavily subsidized & in some other sectors of the economy.

Question: why should thesame neo liberals who subsidize Agriculture in Europe & America tell Nigeria what subsidy to remove ?

When you reason as a sane Nigerian, you will know that Tinubu has sold Nigeria ön a platter of ego, power & emi o kan

grin

Isn't this the same thing Chimamanda Adichie said and ethnic jingoists almost called for her head? Now a renowned activist from the Yoruba stock, Millionaire in dollars, a Legal Juggernaut is reiterating same ,just like uncountable sensible Nigerians but Yanribo,Hellinoise Freedafttt and other data boys feel otherwise. The long enduring argument is that the Middle class forms the bedrock in the strata of a civilized society, particularly in Nigeria where we are domiciled.

Thanks for daring them Femi Falana, even though they tried to bribe or drown your voice with the CON award. You rightly deserve it as the legal icon that you are anyway.

The current administration has severely weakened Nigeria’s economy. The naira is now one of the world’s worst-performing currencies, and the much-publicised subsidy removal program has left citizens feeling deceived rather than relieved. At this rate, Nigeria risks being seen as a fourth-tier economy, struggling under the weight of poor policy execution and leadership failure.

This is total truth to power. I sometimes wonder what those below the middle class are surviving on. There's a larger gap between the rich and the poor. Before policies are implemented, there should be an ongoing process of mitigating its effects.
PBAT is really showing that his govt is for the 1% of the 1%.

Anybody with eye could see it, people who earn 300k monthly before are said to be middle class, 300k is barely enough to fuel your car monthly now, if you take your family to eateries during weekend be prepaid to spend about 50k, if you spend that sort of money twice in a month your salary is gone.

Honestly!

The few remaining are the ones who were lucky to have secured fixed assets and are still earning enough to not have to sell them.

Instead of selling their homes to shore up dying businesses in Nigeria, people would rather sell them and jápa.
