Nigerian parents are just too weak to challenge those proprietors.
And when you do as a parent, the other parents keep quiet making you appear as if "your own too much"
I wonder why they are that afraid, sometimes I feel maybe they are owing the school hence why they can't demand for what is right.

Gbolahan Adetayo, a prominent Nigerian journalist and filmmaker, has issued a fervent appeal to the Federal and State Ministries of Education to address what he calls the “wicked” and commercialised culture of graduation ceremonies.

In a passionate statement, Adetayo lamented the shift from traditional, meaningful send-offs to exploitative annual events, particularly within nursery and primary schools.

Adetayo reminisced about the good old days of the 1980s and 1990s, when graduation was a truly significant milestone.

“Ceremonies were reserved for students completing their final year of Primary 6, senior secondary school (SS3), and university,” he wrote.

He described these events as a celebration of hard work and academic progress, noting that parents and students alike took immense pride in the achievement.

In those days, ceremonies were modest yet memorable, marking a genuine transition to the next academic phase.

However, Adetayo argued that this tradition has been replaced by an annual fundraising scheme.

He expressed outrage at the trend of children as young as Kindergarten 1 being made to “graduate” in elaborate ceremonies that require parents to pay substantial levies for gowns, decorations, food, and photo sessions.

“This culture is not just ridiculous, it's wicked,” Adetayo stated, highlighting the immense financial burden these yearly events place on families.

He pointed out that parents are forced to pay for these parties every year, a cycle that has driven many into debt and unnecessary stress.

In some tragic cases, he claimed, this pressure has pushed struggling single mothers into prostitution just to meet societal expectations.

Adetayo emphasised that in Nigeria's current economic climate, such luxuries are unsustainable for families already struggling to survive.

He urged the Ministry of Education to “rise to the occasion” and make it mandatory that only students completing Primary 6, SS3, and university degrees should be allowed to have graduation ceremonies.

He believes that allowing every class to “graduate” diminishes the true significance of academic progress and sends the wrong message to children about the value of milestones.

"This is no longer just a school issue, it is a national concern. Our education system should uplift, not drain. I urge you to act now before this cultural cancer spreads beyond repair,” Adetayo concluded.

As much as I support the author of this outburst, I am of the opinion that more than 80% of the parents are in support of this avaricious quest to siphon people's hard earned money. Personally, I don't subscribe to, neither do I encourage such wicked moves by these schools.
Parents oftentimes see graduation moments as an ostentatious display of affluence, even if they have to borrow to do so. Such parents see other parents who do not participate as being poor. So, in essence, it is a time of fierce competition among parents and among pupils. Due to this fact, many parents who were not initially participating in this money-wasting ceremonies have joined the bandwagon as well in order to gain a false sense of belonging, giving the school owners more boldness to cash in more cool currencies.
If parents are serious and really do not want to further encourage these greedy school owners, I am sure they know what to do and how to go about it. Nobody, I repeat, no school owner has the legal power to force any parent, neither is any parent bound by any such law, to go against their wish.
In summary, parents must join hands together and fight this societal menace that they have emboldened the school owners to carry out in broad daylight, pillaging people of their scarce means.
