Ah, now I get it. You have a problem with the so called bandwagonism. That is a valid problem, but I don't see how the organizers can solve this without outrightly removing the power to choose winners from the hands of the viewers, which would frankly tank the show.

Unfortunately it is just human nature. There are few original thinkers. Most people are frankly automatons. They simply do what others do without giving it any sincere or deep thought. This cuts right through the type of clothes they wear, their perception of beauty, the religion they practice, the school they send their children to and so on including the people they vote for in reality TV shows.

There is no depth to most people beyond the artificial depth offered by safe collective groupthink. Anybody who wins big brother has to have a critical mass of robots and semi-automatons, an effective mass of bandwagons to win. And frankly I don't see what anybody can do about it without taking power from the viewers which would prove very unpopular and effectively tank the show.

As you say, it might tank the show BUT considering that such methods have been adopted in other continents, it is something that we should actually consider. Unless of course the organisers truly generate a lot of profit from having viewers vote.

Very good point, but this actually brings us back to the same problem I highlighted last season. I think I argued this thing with Safarigirl or someone else last year. Viewer voting has undeniably been a non-negotiable part of the show. That's why I've previously argued that public voting and intentional strategic housemate gameplay are fundamentally incompatible. As long as the public has the final say on who is evicted every week, the housemates will still be playing a popularity game to win over the audience which, as I've explained in the past, is a nearly impossible game to play because of the sentimental nature of the BBNaija fanbase. The competition and tasks and all else is fine. But at the end of the day, the unpredictability and a-logical nature of the voting audience will always dictate the pace of the game, strategies be damned.

Your idea of giving the "most entertaining" housemate immunity is cool but it doesn't really alter the power dynamics. The housemate who wins that immunity is safe for a week, but their ultimate fate is still in the hands of the voting public. A truly strategic or competitive player will still be at a significant disadvantage against a fan favorite, no matter how poorly the fan favorite performs in tasks or how little they contribute to the house.

That's why I don't think the show can have it both ways. It's either you play a game where the most strategic and active player wins, or it's just a popularity contest where the most beloved contestant prevails and gameplay is irrelevant.

In my opinion, Big Brother should just decide if he wants to keep public voting or if he wants to cede agency to the housemates. He just can't have it both ways.

I would have gone in-depth on how Biggie has tried this method before during All Stars and how it failed, but this post is long enough as it is. If you're interested though, I'll speak more on that.

I agree a whole lot with what you have written, but the organizers are in a difficult situation you would have to admit, because there is no ideal system or perfect solution hence why they try to integrate the present system that is voters based and other stuffs they have tried in the past like the team of ex housemates which they brought during the all star season that proved to be massively unpopular (as you alluded to in your post).

I don't envy them one bit. If we are to simply look at it from a profit margin and business point of view, which it is of course, the ideal solution would be to keep the power to choose winners in the house of the viewers, especially if we have smart viewers. But we don't have smart voters which is unfortunately a problem with democracies in general, democratic systems as a whole-----not just BBN.


Democracies rise and fall on the strength of the intelligence of the average voter. The more intelligent the average voting population, the more successful the democracy. But we don't apparently have smart viewers, so there is that problem, however if the organizers were to take it away from the viewers they would have a PR disaster on their hands which they may be unable to recover from.

It would have been a lot different if they had weaned their fanbase from the get go with these other systems that do not involve the viewers determining the winner but involve more strategic or expertise interventionist systems to determine the winner, but doing it now, after all these years, would be catastrophic. What they could possible do, in any meaningful way, is keep this baseline system and integrate it with other interventionist system. Which is basically what they are doing.

It is not by any means ideal, not truly compatible, but this is simply the best they can come up with in this very delicate situation.

But people like you are in the minority. You love the game for the game, but most people aren't like you. They are glory hunters(football term), all they care about is rooting for the winning team. The organisers can not take that risk, multi choice I believe is struggling all across Africa. One bad show and there is no show anymore. That is why they are doing the safest thing they can possibly do. Stir the water, to keep it interesting a bit, but do not stir too violently so as not to rock the boat or upturn it completely.

I don't think anyone is blaming winners in this discussion, at least I am not. It wouldn't make sense to because they didnt make themselves winners. We are just identifying the problem with how the organisers are currently selecting winners and comparing it with what the organisers are doing in other countries for the SAME franchise. Watching the other BB especially the US one will make you realise there is a lot of excitement for viewers even if it is the housemates that conspire and scheme to vote for the eventual winner. I know I made the assumption that the goals of the big brother franchise worldwide were the same - Social Experiment. BUT if the Nigerian version is more about making profits from the viewers, who am I to tell them to take a loss? Personally, several years ago, I made a decision not to vote but just to enjoy the housemates and congratulate whomever the viewers chose.

I'm afraid you're talking off-point and misunderstanding the debate here. The argument is not about the "type" of winner, but the "method" of winning. The issue isn't that a "Lapo kid" or any other contestant wins, but that they win by appealing to a sentiment-based majority, rather than by outplaying their opponents in a strategic game. The reality is that a strong season isn't just about personalities; it's about how those personalities are challenged by the game's rules. If the rules of the game make it easier to win by being popular rather than by being an active player, then the organizers are failing to create a truly competitive and entertaining season.

I won't advise the organizers to remove viewer voting completely, as it will be off-brand for BBN. But we can definitely up the ante in terms of competitiveness and entertainment. I think this will be a good time to revisit a list of suggestions I made for the show after last season. Here:

I believe there's a couple of things that can be done once this season is over to make the show look fresh, and feel more intense and highly competitive, while maintaining the spirit and vibes of Big Brother as a show, as well as letting us see more emotions and strategies from the housemate.

Now here are my pitches:

- Go on a break for at least one or two or even three years, with the promise of a return. Hardcore fans will feel the show's absence and will be eagerly awaiting the show's resumption. Casual viewers, people who have lost interest, and even haters of the show will take notice of the show's absence. When the show returns, I believe it will be a major topic of the summer for a great portion of the population. The following changes to the game structure can then be made.
- Encourage nominations to be discussed among the housemates throughout the season, not just a couple of weeks. Let the housemates talk in groups and come up with plans on who they want gone, whether for personal reasons or for game reasons. Let it become a part and parcel of the nomination process. Many people don't know the amount of drama that can be realized from this change alone lol.
- Limit the number of housemates nominated every week to just three. I don't know why Biggie loves putting half the house on the block. With fewer people on the block, it will be a bit more clear who the house targets are, and with fewer targets or spots on the chopping block, the housemates will have to think strategically about who to nominate and why. We might be seeing more calculated moves and blindsides, making the game more exciting.
- Following from my second point, there should be a tough competition among the nominated housemates and three other housemates selected by random draw on Wednesday every week, two days after the nomination ceremony. The winner will have the power to either save and replace a housemate with someone else on the block, or leave the nominations intact. Tactically genius housemates can exploit this to their advantage. Voting by the public will start on Wednesday night after the competition and close on Saturday night.
- Introduce brand new twists that can stir up the pot and potentially even lead to conflict in the house in the early weeks. For instance, the recent face to face nominations that Biggie did was cool, but I honestly feel it would have produced a stronger effect in the house if it was done much earlier in week 1 or 2. Housemates are just getting to know each other in those weeks and a twist like that can set the tone for the nature of the relationships inside the house. Production should watch and learn from the British and Australian versions on how to implement creative twists to shake up the house.
- Speaking of twists, they should try as much as possible to avoid twists from previous seasons of BBN.
- Also, and this is just a personal annoyance of mine, I feel like the number of sponsored tasks are too many. Production should either reduce, or if you asked me, completely remove them. I prefer the BBA era where it was all about arena games and wagers.
- With the exception of the wager (which Biggie should be making very difficult to win especially if the house wagers 100%), tasks in the house should always come close to putting the housemates on edge. Test their mental resolve, physicality, endurance, and even their trust in their fellow housemates. There are challenges designed to do just that.
- Less table shaking from Ebuka. I feel like he does too much these days. Or even if he must, it shouldn't blow up anybody's game outrightly. He can make loose references without calling names, or ask interesting or ambiguous questions that can make people second-guess their strategies.
- Let evicted housemates know who nominated them. For the life of me, I don't know why this element of the show was abandoned. It's another good setup for conflict when they want to do their reunion the following year.
- I don't know if this is the case already but I feel like housemates who make it to the final week of the show should be guaranteed some cash as a reward, like a small fraction of the ultimate prize money. It will incentivize them to work harder to make the final five.

These are people that have grown to associate the show with voting and fan wars. It's an important element of the show now, for better or worse.

Me too, I would prefer the housemate voting format but it's too late to implement that now.

*Gigi*: I was renting my mega yacht, but you were right, it's a canoe, I didn't look out for the iceberg, it crushed the canoe, the Titanic got nothing on this. My canoe isn't a nice person, he hurt my feelings, I said I was open to anything in the house, cos I close off sometimes including my heart but it's a lifetime opportunity so I wanted to enjoy it. I knew the iceberg eas there but he kept denying it, it was like 1912, I realized the iceberg too late. During the HOH game I thought it was a me problem, but I realized it wasn't me, i'm a sweet person, very emotional, and my people in the house comforted me, ensured me that I don't deserve how I was treated, I have no more tears to shed on that, but maybe i'll cry about something else

*Biggie*: Where was the iceberg
*Gigi*: The iceberg was in the middle of the ocean called Joanna, I have nothing against her though. My problem was with my canoe Victory. It hurt a lil bit, I hoped Victory will choose me, I understand we're from different backgrounds, and I'm learning different values, my values with him don't align, what I see as bad, he doesn't. I feel bad cos I allowed someone make me forget why i'm here. I'm here because you have a nephew, my son called Elliot(about to cry). *Biggie*: On the bright side, you only rented the yacht, so you saved your money. But will you buy another ship or canoe in the future?
*Gigi*: Nope, I wanna focus, the task is the perfect distraction. I wanna win player of week, help win part of the prize money on offer weekly, I wanna have a standalone identity, I like my people to spur me on, saying 'I GOT THIS. If I win HOH, i'll wanna make the house fun & ask if someone can rent me her canoe

*Gigi*: maybe bright because we have a really fun time, we call the HOH lounge a condo, when I retire to my condo, I wanna retire & have banter with the likes of Bright, Otega or Sultana, but my ultimate is Jason, I don't think I wanna do it though, if it comes up for auction, I don't think i'll win the auction (😂😂😂😂)

*Gigi*: Absolute power corrupts absolutely. He could be very short, when he got on the seat, he felt the power, he told Isabella to shut up, I don't appreciate his rudeness. He said something rude in pidgin (tries to speak pidgin but fails 😂). If he worked on his leadership skills & anger management, he'll be a good HOH cos he's making the game interesting. I don't like hoe waitresses are spoken to talk less of we housemates, he's supposed to be a beacon of hope, but I don't see the light. When you ask a question he makes me look stupid, he could do better. When I win HOH I know i'll be a great leader

*Gigi*: i'm happy for him, but no. We discussed him winning it before the iceberg, even when I rented the canoe, he still had a rude attitude. He has the right intention but wrong approach. His mouth moves 10 times faster than his breath. Congrats to him but that's how I genuinely, unbiasedly feel. I'm learning better words for you because you have a great vocabulary

*Gigi*: I thought he'll save bright because that's his guy, I know he has had conversations with KK. But with the situation in the house yesterday, I was happy for him because he was in tears & talked about leaving. I was shocked but then it made sense, i'm happy KK has another week in the house

I don't think anyone is blaming winners in this discussion, at least I am not. It wouldn't make sense to because they didnt make themselves winners. We are just identifying the problem with how the organisers are currently selecting winners and comparing it with what the organisers are doing in other countries for the SAME franchise. Watching the other BB especially the US one will make you realise there is a lot of excitement for viewers even if it is the housemates that conspire and scheme to vote for the eventual winner. I know I made the assumption that the goals of the big brother franchise worldwide were the same - Social Experiment. BUT if the Nigerian version is more about making profits from the viewers, who am I to tell them to take a loss? Personally, several years ago, I made a decision not to vote but just to enjoy the housemates and congratulate whomever the viewers chose.

On twitter people are trolling Kelly Rae to return the money, they troll winner after winner with the “undeserved” tag like they are the reason for a boring season. Which I think is unfair.

Very good point, but this actually brings us back to the same problem I highlighted last season. I think I argued this thing with Safarigirl or someone else last year. Viewer voting has undeniably been a non-negotiable part of the show. That's why I've previously argued that public voting and intentional strategic housemate gameplay are fundamentally incompatible. As long as the public has the final say on who is evicted every week, the housemates will still be playing a popularity game to win over the audience which, as I've explained in the past, is a nearly impossible game to play because of the sentimental nature of the BBNaija fanbase. The competition and tasks and all else is fine. But at the end of the day, the unpredictability and a-logical nature of the voting audience will always dictate the pace of the game, strategies be damned.

Your idea of giving the "most entertaining" housemate immunity is cool but it doesn't really alter the power dynamics. The housemate who wins that immunity is safe for a week, but their ultimate fate is still in the hands of the voting public. A truly strategic or competitive player will still be at a significant disadvantage against a fan favorite, no matter how poorly the fan favorite performs in tasks or how little they contribute to the house.

That's why I don't think the show can have it both ways. It's either you play a game where the most strategic and active player wins, or it's just a popularity contest where the most beloved contestant prevails and gameplay is irrelevant.

In my opinion, Big Brother should just decide if he wants to keep public voting or if he wants to cede agency to the housemates. He just can't have it both ways.

I would have gone in-depth on how Biggie has tried this method before during All Stars and how it failed, but this post is long enough as it is. If you're interested though, I'll speak more on that.

I think Big Brother wants to guide a path to events that produce a worthy winner. Which in my opinion will tank the viewers engagement.
