Re: My Review On "To Kill A Monkey" Trending Nollywood Movie by Entanglement: 10:57pm On Aug 05, 2025
Pojomojo:
I totally get where you're coming from — your points are well-thought-out and highlight some valid concerns. But I’d argue that what you see as flaws might actually be deliberate choices that reflect a different kind of storytelling — one that prioritizes symbolism and social commentary over strict realism.

Take the Teacher character, for instance. While he may not have driven the plot in a conventional sense, some viewers saw him more as a symbolic figure — a moral compass or cautionary voice. His conflict with Oboz and the entanglement with Efe might have felt forced to you, but others interpreted it as a layered metaphor about misguided loyalty, identity, and peer pressure — especially in a society where influence often trumps logic.

Now on Efe — yes, it’s strange to see someone that talented so broke. But isn’t that the sad reality in many parts of Africa today? Countless brilliant minds are underfunded, underappreciated, and underpaid. Tech skills alone don’t guarantee financial success — access, privilege, and networks matter too. Efe being broke might be less about being "clueless" and more about being stuck in a system that doesn’t reward innovation unless it aligns with certain power structures.

As for Oboz, I’d argue he wasn’t meant to be the polished, calculated type of mafia boss you see in Western movies. He was chaotic, insecure, and loud — maybe intentionally so. His bragging, womanizing, and poor judgment painted a picture of the kind of "big man" that exists in many urban realities — all noise, no substance. His recklessness wasn’t a script flaw; it was a warning.

The Efe-Oboz dynamic was uncomfortable, sure, but maybe it was meant to be. Efe’s boldness in asking for 50% was insane — no doubt — but it also exposed the entitlement and desperation that corruption often breeds. And Oboz letting it slide? That wasn’t just stupidity, it was ego. He thought he could control Efe. That’s the tragedy.

Regarding Nosa — you’re not wrong. Her reaction was believable, even typical. But let’s not excuse it too easily. Yes, Efe lacked backbone, but she also showed a willingness to enjoy the spoils without questioning the cost. That moral decay wasn’t just Efe’s — it spread.

Finally, on the issue of crime not being condemned: this is a tough one. I agree that the ending was morally grey, but maybe that was the point. The filmmakers didn’t glorify crime as much as they mirrored the discomforting reality many of us live in — where the lines between crime, hustle, and success are dangerously blurred. The absence of a clean moral wrap-up forces the audience to wrestle with what they just watched. It’s not satisfying, but it is haunting — and maybe that’s more powerful.

So yeah, To Kill a Monkey wasn’t perfect, but maybe its imperfections are what made it real, at least in a raw, unfiltered way. I’d personally give it an 8.5/10 — not for technical excellence alone, but for the conversations it’s sparked and the mirror it’s held up to society

You're right about just one thing, Teacher should have been introduced from the exact time Efe joined the caucus.

About, Oboz, he's just a philandering mischievous young man who stumbled upon money at young age. Most of his shenanigans do happen after he's highly intoxicated, he stated that himself.

Efe is a very good man who lost his integrity because he was trying so hard to protect his family. He stumbled on the wrong gang who left him with no choice but to get his hand dirty, he had no other option. Dire poverty led him to leave the life that's against his policy and way of life
His wife Nosa wasn't of great help either, she succumbed to alcoholism and stopped being a responsible woman. She also chased her husband to another woman, no more sex, no more intimacy, no more planning together.
She didn't allow Efe to express himself, they'll have solved the whole issue together if they were united.

In conclusion, it was a great movie, Kemi Adetiba did a great job. The movie didn't glorify crime as you claim.
Oboz died, Efe was apprehended by the good job of Mo, the NCCC inspector, Teacher also died, so how did the movie encouraged crime.
The movie was topnotch, a great movie to watch

What I particularly disliked about this movie was the deus ex machina. How they messed up the detective's story arc. She was supposed to be brilliant and was making progress till the point of a legit interesting cul de sac only for the writer to solve it for her with Olosho snitching.

How on earth did Olosho get that incriminating video to post? Teacher wanted to use the video to hold Efe's balls.

Disappointing but overall entertaining series. 7/10
The Olosho was working for Teacher from the beginning underground.
It was even Teacher that rented that apartment for her.

Brotherly dey my back, before Dem touch you Dem go first kill me. This scene is on Replay in my head.
To me the movie is a good one and not over hyped. It speaks about betrayal, desperation, dangers of crime, love ,and many more.
Nosa didn't do well at all, I blame her real good.
Oboz d boss killed the role
Idiah oh my God she acted well.
Ivie was an ungrateful bitch.
Efe hmmm, he fall my hands by betraying oboz and turning his back on Amanda.
The list goes on but I'd rate it 8.5/10

Why do Nigerian moves like doing too much and preaching or glorifying bad vices? Then the movie seems to highlight only notorious characters and images. Suspense and thriller doesn't have to be notorious only.

No life lessons or truth to learn from just reckless entertainment.

From the trailer alone I'm not interested to watch cos I know I won't learn anything from it and the script is still predictable and cliche.

However the actors gave a good performance with acting skills. That was the entertainment.

Your review is totally flawed. Those things you complained about weren't even issues. You didn't even point out the real errors
Then you point them out. undecided

It's INTELLECTUAL LAZINESS, Sir. smiley

There are lots of Issues in the Nigerian society that can be used for Acting but Movie producers Can't think. embarassed sad

You can act movies based on IPOB sit at home, Bandits activities in the North, etc just as we had with Issakaba! smiley

I don't rate these Newbie Movies and their Overrated producers. undecided

I rate this series a 5. I felt they copied scenes of different movies and created a Nigerian version which I do respect them for it.

If you have watched family (2006) , an Indian movie starring Amitabh Bachchan. You will notice, such movie was based on family, street, betrayal. This is something similar to "to kill a monkey "

In the Indian movie family, they kidnapped viren sahi(Amitabh Bachchan) family. But in the nigerian series "to kill a monkey ", efe daughter was kidnapped. I am also trying to say, both criminal gangs messed up each other's family.

Now, there was a part in the 9ja series where teacher went back to his house(dark-no light) while reminiscing at those times his grandkids were playing. He felt goosebumps. This is the same for the Indian movie "family" where Viren Sahi went to his old house reminiscing the times his kids were small.

I also felt they took out a section from scarface by al Pacino as Tony where Tony's friend was dating Tony's sister.
Oboz dated efes daughter.

Also, nigerian movie not to tech enough but the usual home video scenery. I expected they could have shown us the AI scamming but they showed us one view of it. After all, we have seen American movies, Indian movies when it is relating to computer- hacking etc we get to see what they do..I wanted to see this Nigerian series show futuristic computers - augmented reality, transparent display smart glass in relation to AI scamming.

As for the Op, your review shows you're out of touch with the reality of life and no clue of the doings of the underworld.
God bless you....very wrong review...far from reality of life by the op

Yes but how did she get the video? What was the purpose? Teacher wanted to use it to continue gaining money from Efe. Besides it was never shown that he gave her the video.

Sir I write movies and I produce. In movies we show and don't tell. You are implying now because of a gaping plot hole. Please watch the movie again. If Teacher was pissed Efe was trying to run away, fine. But where did he hand over such incriminating video to her? The why was Teacher so smug that a drowning man like Efe wouldn't have sold him out as a part in all the violence.

Understand plotting and plot holes sir before snide insults.

Teacher had a link with that lady, she was working for him remember he gave her two weeks to leave the house and told her she was of no use to him anymore.

Where did they show it sir? We are all just implying because of an apparent plot hole in a movie we like 😂😂😂 He had a lot to gain by using that video to get Efe working for him.

I feel you Chief...!

I didn't mean Straw was great or high quality. Not in the least.

I was referring to the hype and sheer amount of views and commentaries on it, not to mention the generated buzz... It was immense!

It was practically impossible to open social media without a post or hot take about the movie thrown in your face, especially by ladies.
I get your point. There was so much buzz around it like it was terrific. All was for Tyler Perry's pocket.
I think the Korean Movie industry need to be appreciated. Their movies with lot of hype are actually worth it i.e Squid Game, Parasite, etc.

They don't need to show that, they're allies, not every scene wouod be shown.
Was it revealed before that she's working for Teacher? No.
She could've gone back to beg Teacher and both agreed to bring Efe down together.

thanks for making me remember scarface ,restaurant scene.

The shooting of oboz in the end, I saw it to be scarface but this can also be other movies so I never mention that part.

To me, that movie is a 4 or 5..I don't know why people are going crazy about it.

it is there in the movie though not shown it was it was said in the narration towards the end. Watch from where teacher came to meet the lady at home informing her of efes betrayal and listen to the narration after that leading to the court and then to the end.
