Nigerian Lawyer Sheds Light On Soludo-peter Obi Verbal War On Single Term by TouchNfollow(op):
Nigerian lawyer sheds light on Soludo-Peter Obi verbal war on single term

In June, Mr Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, pledged to serve for a single term if elected Nigeria’s president, which Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State criticised.

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, have resumed their war of words over Mr Obi’s pledge to serve for one term if elected Nigeria’s president in 2027.

How it started
On 29 June 2025, Mr Obi declared his intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.

The LP candidate, who served as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, pledged to serve for a four-year tenure if elected the country’s president in 2027.

In Nigeria, elected presidents are constitutionally entitled to a four-year tenure and also are also qualified to seek reelection for a second and final term.

In response, Mr Soludo, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, argued politicians who make such promises are mentally unstable.

The governor spoke on Saturday during a political rally held in Ekwulobia within Anambra South District in support of his second-term ambition.

In his response, Mr Obi reaffirmed his vow to serve only a single four-year term if elected Nigeria’s president, adding that his critics were judging him by their standards, where political promises are made to be broken.

Lawyer sheds light
Mr Agomuo, while appearing as a guest on Voice of People TV on Monday morning, said Mr Soludo was not referring to Mr Obi.

The lawyer said Mr Soludo was referring to Nicholas Ukachukwu, the 2025 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State.

Like Mr Obi, Mr Ukachukwu promised to serve for only one term if elected governor in Anambra State in compliance with the state zoning arrangement.

The APC candidate hails from Orsumeyi in Nnewi South Local Government Area within Anambra South District of the state.

Mr Soludo hails from Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area within the same Anambra South District of the state.

Mr Agomuo explained that Mr Soludo was trying to tell Mr Ukachukwu that contesting for governorship despite coming from Anambra South District as himself would alter the zoning arrangement in the state.

“I’ll advise Peter Obi to stop talking ahead of time. If you check (that clip) very well, Soludo was not referring to Obi.

“Go and listen to the context of that statement. (Nicholas) Ukachukwu said he would take one term in Anambra. Soludo was now telling him that if you take one term in Anambra it would alter the political permutation in Anambra,” he explained. “He (Soludo) didn’t mention Peter Obi.”

The lawyer said the comment was misunderstood to be aimed at Mr Obi because it came at the same time the LP candidate promised to serve for one term.

“Soludo was not referring to Peter Obi specifically. But now, Peter Obi has replied ahead of time without even considering whether it was for him or Ukachukwu.

“If it were for Obi, Soludo wouldn’t have said it (Ukachukwu’s contest) would alter the political permutation in Anambra State; that after him, Anambra Central District will take (the governorship slot),” he added.

The immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, who served for two terms, hails from Anambra North District.

PREMIUM TIMES transcribed below Mr Soludo’s opening and closing comments at the political rally to show he might not directly refer to Mr Obi.

“After now, anyone who is contesting for governorship from Anambra South (District) is causing a crisis. He’s trying to disrupt to zoning system in Anambra.

“Some of them (have) come to lie to us. How can anybody with a brain…You think you are talking to fools. You come to people and say, ‘I’ll do only one term.’

“Anybody, any politician who said that, must be sent to a psychiatric home.

“Some of them (governorship candidates) have no school certificate. Yet, they want to be the governor of Anambra.”

This should be another opportunity to pass a single term of 5 years into law by senate and House of Representatives. Obasanjo brought up the idea towards the twilight of his presidency but it was shot down. Jonathan brought up the same and it was shot down two. Campaign for second terms usually starts two years into a term and the whole focus of leadership shifts to clinching a second term instead of serving the masses but if there is no second term on the plate they will start working for the people from day one. To buttress that argument further most past governors and presidents put in more effort in second term at serving the people than first term. One single term when passed into law will benefit the masses the most

True, he may not have been referring to Obi. However anyone who understands political speech understands that innuendoes, side-blows, killing two birds with one stone, and other such things exist. Nonetheless, in light of POs one-term promise being simultaenously in the public space, it was natural and useful for him to comment on it.

Both this lawyer and Soludo are lying if they say he's not targeting Obi. It's a case of using one stone to kill two birds.
.
And as for the major topic which is the "one term of a thing". Like Obi like Ukachukwu.
In both cases both Obi and Ukachukwu are trying to complete the tenure of the zone they came from if elected which is where their various incumbents hail from.
Like Obi, Tinubu is from the south if we are to go by the North and South rotational policy.
So in trying to unseat Tinubu and pleased the North which is their turn after another four years. He simply said ok, if I am elected I'll give way to the North after four years.
Same thing with Ukachukwu, he's from Soludo constituency and also promise to do the four years so that the next zone will take over.
.
But you and I knows politicians are liars and greedy. If they get there they'll want to stay more than promised.
So in this case, Obi and Ukachukwu were force to declare one term bcus of the zoning system even though it's not from their heart.
.
N.B: And lastly why do incumbents thinks they should always be allowed to complete their two tenures irrespective of wether they perform or not and also frown if one among the candidates is from their zone.

Whether Soludo was referring to Peter Obi or not is immaterial. What matters is that Obi has consistently reiterated that four years is enough to make meaningful progress and set a nation on the path of growth. You don’t need eight yearsor thirty. If you lack the capacity and competence to deliver, even eternity won’t be enough. As Daniel Bwala rightly said, even if you give Tinubu thirty years, nothing will change because he simply doesn't have what it takes to move this country forward

Soludo was generic in his statements not particular "any politician"who says he will serve one term should have his brain examine. Is Obi a politician? Yes. Did he say he will serve one term? yes
Is Soludo aware of that? Yes
Please spare me he was not referring to Obi - cheap damage Control

Did you forget to tell the Agbadorians this message when they amplified it and used it against Obi?

Do you think the man on the street of Kano or Bayelsa who saw it in the news and social media would have believed the comment was not aimed at Obi?

Soludo has a penchant to attack Obi from nowhere, so it would have been rightly believed he was talking to Obi, and who says Soludo was not trying to use 1 stone to kill 2 birds (Obi and Ukachukwu)?

By the way, Soludo's annoyance with Obi is still because Obi failed to Support him when Soludo wanted to go against the zoning arrangement in the state and instead supported Obiano. Soludo and Obi are from same zone and the villages are barely 20mins drive apart yet Soludo wanted to succeed Obi.

Soludo has never supported Peter Obi's presidential bid.
He has in the past made statements to undermine Obi's popularity and acceptance.
Whatever reasons he has for doing this, only him knows. It's likely he's jealous of Obi or he's working for another political party against Obi.

Nevertheless, South East will still vote Obi massively if he contests. Soludo is wasting his time

Because Soludo had often taken swipes on Obi, the parrots of APC took to the social media with their comments that Soludo was referring to Obi.

Mr. Obi didn't mention anyones' name, he said those doubting his one term promise are judging him by their own standard. it's a case of who the cap fit let him wear it.
So many people doubts his one term promise, why is Governor Soludo camp reacting.

Soludo wants to become the first Igbo president of Nigeria. That's behind all his tirades against Obi.
