To make matters worse, Ezinne was not even in the top 5

Yes, we have won. However, we need to start working on our squad. Kudos to Coach Otis Hughley for bringing players like Amy Okonkwo , Pallas , Victoria Macaulay, Murjanatu Musa and Elizabeth Balogun into the D'tigress squad. Coach Rena needs to go hunting for ladies that will make her work easier at next year's FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Germany. We need a strong bench . We need a pen camp or camps in Europe , USA and Nigeria. Cheers.

After the uproar and furore over the Falcons 160m reward, you think say PBAT go get mind to reward these ones too the same? grin
That man nor send anybody o. grin For him to have sent a delegation of nine of his cabinet members to support the ladies, he may as well reward them handsomely.

Let's see how it goes, na shout Nigerians go just shout. cheesy

I was asking same question too. This is ojoro
Nothing like Ojoro here... Amy has been the best player hustling at both ends of the paint since game 1 v Rwanda, yes Kalu turned up in a big way v Senegal and Mali buh prior to the third quarter yesterday ( v Senegal) Vic and Amy was the best player...

Give it to Amy who has been managing big numbers even today...

I agree that new players should be, at least, tried out before the World Cup to further bolster the team.

Thank goodness that, as African champions, D’Tigress could use the 5 games at the March Olympic qualifying tournament to try out different strategies/tactics and also gauge how the new additions would fit into Wakama’s system.

Even at that, I doubt whether Wakama would ring in wholesale changes to her team. She would, at most, bring in 2-3 new faces.

New and more gifted players are out there waiting to be integrated into the D'tigress squad for the World Cup. This is why the NBBF should organize lengthy training camps in the USA and Nigeria. The ladies should be in Nigeria for at least three weeks before jetting out to Berlin, Germany for the World Cup. D'tigress need to play in friendly tournaments in Europe and the USA in order to see the new camp invitees in action. So, we need a program for the World Cup and next Olympic games.

President Tinubu needs to apologize to the team on behalf of the government for what they did to them in the last world cup
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread! by Nobody: 7:51am On Aug 04, 2025
South Sudan is an emerging force in African basketball.
I read somewhere that Dillard of the Senegalese has retired from the NT. A huge relief for Nigeria.

We still need to beef the squad.
No dearth of quality bballers that are Nigerians in the diaspora.
We need to get the team better.
Hope coach Rena wakama will do so.

Congratulations to the D' Tigresses for achieving the peat.

According to Fisayo Dairo, President Bola Tinubu has rewarded each player of the D’Tigress with $100,000 for winning the AfroBasket for a fifth consecutive time

- $50k for coach and technical staff
- OON for players and officials
- 1 flat each for players and technical staff.

She's done immensely beyond all expectations.

Yes she is. She was made captain after after the previous cohort was disbanded.

I believe she's retired. After Rena was made coach, the team was disbanded and an open trial for new entrants were called. The goal was to retire most of that group or have them before to return. While only Oderah and Ify officially announced their retirement, Adaora didn't but I believe she had. Kalu, Promise and Victoria I believe had to request to be let back in.

Zenith Bank has also donated 200 Million Naira to the team. Each player will receive 10 Million Naira each and will be credited that sum in a Zenith bank Account that will be opened for them, while the remainder will be shared among the technical team.

NB: I have a few opinions on the events of the last few days that will be added as addendums.

Like I opined when the Super Falcons got rewarded, I am happy for the girls but this isn't a net positive for sports development in this country. It's a proof we have no visionary and aren't strategic and futuristic in our approach and I'll expatiate.

It's no news that we've had to deal with player welfare issues the last 10 years almost every competition. Our opting out of the world cup and the drama that happened after the 2021 Olympics were money related. Do you realize the most each player gets for any competition we are involved in whether the Olympics, Afrobasket, World cup etc is $10k based on historical data. It means the NBBF needs maximum $120k as allowances and bonuses for these girls (most competitions are significantly less). It means that based on the current renumeration structure, we'll never have issues with players with that amount.

The president just gave them about $1.5M. At 10% fixed in a low risk investment, returns from that trust will fund whatever allowance the girls might need in perpetuity. That's how to think future. There's a huge likelihood that after this honeymoon phase, we'll return to players still being owed money.

Success has plenty friends. As we speak the women's basketball league is being held with many of the teams not participating because they don't have money for logistics. Zenith bank to be fair gas been a long time sponsor of the league but the anyhowness of the NBBF board hasn't allowed that partnership to grow. . This same Zenith bank just gave the girls 200M which is about 8yrs sponsorship money the local league gets. The league can't grow like this sadly.

Time and chance is an interesting concept and understanding where you hope to work and it's peculiarities, and the patience to navigate through it is very key.

Abi Olajuwon joined the team as assistant coach to the last Olympics. Upon it's conclusion she put up a social media post expressing disappointment about promised allowances not paid after 2 weeks. Cause a bit of an issue between her and Rena cause she put up WhatsApp chats on her Instagram page and did 4 posts on the matter. If she had handled it a lot better she would still be a part of the team and would be enjoying the largesse with them now.

Rena Wakama paradoxically was an unknown assistant coach who got the greatest opportunity of her life to lead this team. She will obviously have been owed like everyone else, but she's handled this with grace. Her status has since changed as she's now an assistant coach in the WNBA and will very soon get better offers. She's received the biggest visibility of her life by just staying the course. Happy for her.

Can't get over that final. Even though I watched the entire game, I've watched the replay over and over again.. Still can't get enough of it.

I think that semi final against Senegal was more tough and I was more nervous than that final against Mali.. All the same congratulations to them once again.

...The N.B.B.F should go and look for sponsors and HNI to fund their trust, the ladies better take their money and not look back, they should see it has decades of sweat, neglect and even punishment for speaking up, is being rewarded by the man up high, Some of our key players are in their mid 30s, they should see it as early retirement money....If the N.B.BF wants a fund, they should start a fresh...Also best believe, all that money will still be squandered, if given to the N.B.B.F to start a fund, so i will rather the ladies take their money and run...so you know, i am almost certain that the ladies will be levied for a certain percentage of the money, considering how Nigeria works.

I don't disagree. Like I said I'm happy for the girls. The conversation is more about the lack of direction of the sporting federations in the country and how the incessant challenges with funding can be solved with the right leadership.

Also, it's kinda bittersweet because half of those who really struggled through the years and deserve this money aren't a part of the team. Think of Ify, Oderah, Adaora and Atonye.

...The reason for the lack of direction is due to the sheer greed of officials, looking out for themselves as against, looking out for the next generation coming behind...when, we get sincere people, things would align, until then....the lord is our strength.. Sad some of the girls are not here(old squad)...it is well....

...use to watch her games while she was in Turkey on youtube....I think she is one for the future....I thought she was going to make it for this Afrobasket, however, with the return of Victoria Macaulay, that made it hard...Also having Pallas, Musa...it was going to be hard...Although if I am not sure if the Ejiofor babe is better than her, to be honest..I think Ebo is better ,however, that is what a short camp does, it makes the coach just go with what they know...Unfortunately, the world cup to might be the same, as the likes of Kiki, Micheala might just suite up for Nigeria, hence limiting the opportunites..If she goes out there in Spain and dominate, then she would definately have a huge leverage...

I get your point, Victoria was very important in recent victory at Afrobasket ( her jump-shot efficiency rate really shocked me
) and what Musa does with the Steals cannot be overstated either so Ebo is a long shot even though ACB is the best league in Europe bar Russian league... Her skills will be honed there, am hopeful in the long run

Players like Lauren Ebo have to evolve their game to make them necessary for a roster. She needs to first acknowledge her deficiencies; and work around it to her advantage. Her size makes are a bit slower, but she can leverage that to get defensive stops and bully her way to the basket. At 6"4 she should evolve into being the best rim protector, a great rebounder and one who can easily get a basket playing bully ball when needed. Outside of the above she just doesn't have a chance yet.
