Nigerian football legends Jay Jay Okocha and Taye Taiwo were in town as President Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso celebrated a historic milestone with the grand reopening of the renovated August 4th Stadium in Ouagadougou.

Jay Jay Okocha, Emmanuel Adebayor, and other African football legends headlined a charity match at the newly renovated August 4th Stadium in Ouagadougou.

Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore commissioned the facility on August 4, 2025, and organised an exhibition match The $300 million project has now met CAF and FIFA standards, while it has also ended a four-year ban.

After a four-year ban, the once-dilapidated arena has now been transformed into a world-class facility, meeting CAF and FIFA standards following a $300 million project. A star-studded charity football match was organized alongside cultural performances, which showcased Burkina Faso’s resilience and ambition on a continental stage.

The exhibition match pitted African football legends against Burkina Faso’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS), led by President Traore himself.

Icons like Nigeria’s Jay Jay Okocha, Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor, Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, and Mali’s Seydou Keita graced the event. Others include Taye Taiwo, Charles Kabore, Rigobert Song, and Alex Song, who all dazzled fans despite the rain-soaked pitch.

Footage showed the packed stadium with the country's leader also showing off his skills. The newly revamped August 4th Stadium now boasts modern seating, VIP lounges, digital scoreboards, and an impressive athletics track.

The facility will host the country's national team when they take on Egypt in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on September 8. Speaking on behalf of the legends, four-time CAF Player of the Year Award recipient Samuel Eto’o, praised Traore’s vision and the warm hospitality.

He said via Summit Post: “First of all, we want to thank you for welcoming us into our home, into your home. We had the immense pleasure of being received by His Excellency, the President of Burkina Faso, who is a source of pride for the Africa we love.

Beyond expressing feelings of happiness and joy at having exchanged with Captain Ibrahim Traoré, it is about sharing with the President of Faso and all Burkinabè, a beautiful moment for the reopening of the August 4 Stadium.

“I hope that for those who are in Ouagadougou for the first time, it won’t be their last. We have to come back because Burkina Faso is a part of Africa, and as you can see, all these legends have brought so many smiles to this continent. We feel at home everywhere on our continent.”

That's the power of leadership. All it takes is one man with a vision.

Traore kept on inspiring hope while criminally inclined geriatric is leading a pack of criminals that are destroying a nation back here. This is what is means for a country to have visionary leadership to enhance development.

This young military turk has been working tirelessly to get his colonial-reigns ravished country back into the comity of nation. Now sports have taken the spotlight with this stadium renovation.

Meanwhile this is the same man the western world and our agbado munching crew back home were demonizing especially that efulefu called Sam Omatsaye. They think that anything via crooked means succeeds. I drove pass the old national stadium in Surulere and shook my head. Imagine what the one in Abuja would look like.
What value will this $300 million stadium add to the lives of the people of burkina faso?

Okocha still have the skills but abit slow because of age....I used to enjoy watching him play for super Eagle. However I believed that this young president is doing better than all this old men in power ,pretending to practice democracy, while looting the nation dry

You all are commending Traore for renovating their national stadium. But if this was in Nigeria, you all would have been questioning the cost of 300 million dollars and condemning the project

Ofcourse he needs to be comnended for putting the stadium back into shape. Atleast the Burkinabes can enjoy internationl games on their soil. But if the picture above is the stadium for $300m, then Burkinafaso has just begun another long journey that leads to no wehere. What an inspiration that will be or maybe the wrong price was quoted by the inspired OP.

It is for the purpose of sports and national pride.

Your question is like asking what will Nigeria winning the African Cup of Nations add to the lives of the people of Nigeria.
Do you realize 200 million Nigerians don't directly or even remotely have anything to gain from winning it but it is still a thing of national pride and togetherness that benefits all Nigerians.

What you should be critical of is if the renovation is worth $300 million which doesn't appear so.

No be everytime you go dey ask this your questions

300 millionhuhhuh

How much does a new stadium cost.

the money should have been injected in area that have a direct benefit to the people.

this is share waste of money and unnecessary show off, just like some idiots in Nigeria are building very unviable airports in their state all just to show that they are developing.

nonsense and ingredients

That is Africa for you.
Here we have our 15 trillion concrete road to El-dorado, 32 billion naira renovated International Conference Center in Abuja and you know na..... our 700 billion naira new or is it old airport in Lagos.

Indeed, what will the average man gain in all these.
